Had the popcorn, pretzel, mussels and the burger. Everything was delicious! The cheese fondue on the perfectly cooked burger was a great touch. The bacon ice cream is unique and delectable. Service and ambiance both also great!

My family and I went here because well we couldn’t find anywhere else to eat. Probably the most deceiving part about Boxcar was the 45 minute wait so if your planning on coming here plan a reservation. The family ordered the fried chicken as I recall they said it was«excellent». They also ordered the Blackened Sole which was good but blackened part was a little tough to chew. One family member ordered the buttered noodles from the kids menu they had to add some salt but overall they said it was really good! I would come here again but I would have a reservation.

It’s really hard to update this review. I’ve been to boxcar 3 times since my 5 star review and each time the experience has been less than spectacular. Drinks have been subpar at best and food has been good but not phenomenal.

It’s a little tough to find. Navigation gets you close but you’ll want to call and get a landmark since it’s hidden behind other stores. It’s not usually overcrowded and it has a more down to earth feel than some more snobby places in town give off. I particularly like the Pretzel Roll appetizer, draft beers and cheeseburger… all are excellent

My son and I came in for a special dinner and we probably aren’t their typical customer but Sarah and the rest of the staff were so kind, patient and helpful. It was also one of the best meals I’ve ever had and they had two of my favorite craft beers. Thank you for making our trip so special.

The mussels were the best I’ve ever had. Service was ok not great. I can’t recommend the hamburger — looked artistic but was too salty and difficult to eat.

(This place should be $$$, not $$.) Very limited menu so check out the menu before you go. We had pork and scallops. Pork was delicious, scallops were too salty. Kids menu was the usual«kids menu» so we got our little guy buttermilk chicken from Small Plates. Two teeny chicken for $ 18. He was done in 6 bites. There were only 3 dessert choices. One we wouldn’t even consider a dessert item(think it was milkshake?). Got bread pudding. It was dry and hard. Worse bread pudding ever. Service was good so giving 3 stars.

I have been here a couple of times over the past year and have to say that the results are disappointing. The problems start at the front door. Both times that we were there it was below 20degrees outside and we were seated in the main dining room up front. Every time that someone came in, a cold blast filled the room. We ere along the back walll and my wife wore her down jacket all night. Some sort of air lock door or drapery vesitbule would be in order. Service has always been fine in a mountain casual sort of way. Certainly not over attentive but there when needed. Menu selections were just not that interesting to me. There were four entrees and about 10 «small plates». One of the entrees is a burger which turned out to be very good but the rest of the stuff just seems to be interesting ingredients that are thrown together in an attempt to be «creative». I don’t usually write bad reviews but this place could be good with a better front door, a little warmth on the inside and a more accessible menu.

I decided to try this place because of the reviews, especially regarding the clam chowder. I ordered $ 9.00 wiesner beer, and should have known when it turned up in a 6oz brandy glass this was not going well. I was expecting a tall 1 litre glass for that price. The clam chowder turned up in decent size bowl, but there was only ¼″ of chowder in the bottom. The clams were 6 tiny things complete with shells, and the potatoes were about 61/8″ cubes. So if you have been out on the mountain all day and are looking for a hearty meal, try somewhere else.

Don’t drive up the mountain, this is the best place in Avon. Great friendly service. Incredible cocktails and the food is incredible.

First time here — the place did not disappoint. The Roasted Cauliflower was awesome and the Muscle’s were off the chart! Had an Ol’ Fashion and the barkeep did a great job! Can’t wait to come back.

Just had the most delicious dinner here last night. Solid attentive service, very good food. Nice variety on the menu, something for everyone. The cauliflower was delicious! The special was an oxtail pappardelle– so, so good!

They have really friendly and knowledgeable staff, I enjoyed a great conversation with a bartender on a not so busy night. Their tequila selection is nice because they have items off the beaten path. I found the food menu to be eclectic but a little scattered. A fun place to hang out though!

Mussels & sausage gave me a stomach ache & I wound up vomiting before I left the restaurant. Cauliflower was good but overpriced. Very disappointed overall. I have edited to give the restaurant 2 stars instead of 1 when I was reminded that the $ 2 beer happy hour was, in fact, a very good deal. The sausage inside the sauce garnishing the mussels made me sick, but I did enjoy the beer.

Really wish I could do the 4.5 — quite happy here arrived in time for happy hour which was an added bonus. Margaritas a must. Small plates are not so small! Burger quite tasty — the bun was almost like a croissant! Cauliflower and pork did not disappoint. Burratta tasty as well. Casual atmosphere where kids are not frowned upon. Would return!

Feel compelled to write a review after my second time dining at Boxcar. The pros: great décor and feel to the restaurant, easy location to access in Avon; decent service. The cons: very limited menu. Several very high priced entrees and not much for the non-seafood, non-meat eater. Kids menu is uninspired and terrible(think PB&J and grilled cheese) and my kids didn’t eat anything from it. Prices are fairly outrageous for Avon, but maybe most of the guests are from out of town visiting Beaver Creek and don’t care? My son and I both had the clam chowder, which was great, but the bill for two bowls of soup, a root beer and a glass of wine was $ 45, which I couldn’t help feeling a bit ripped off by. I think this restaurant works better as a bar or place to grab some apps rather than a dine-in restaurant. Don’t go there if you are very hungry or budget conscious. Still giving it three stars because Avon can use a restaurant like this, but I would like it a lot more with an expanded menu.

I went in last week with a friend for some drinks and apps and everything was delicious! We practically licked the bowl clean that the cauliflower app came in, it was that awesome. We also had the jalapeño popcorn– I was very hesitant in ordering it because I’m a baby when it comes to spice, but it was SO good and no where near as hot as you would anticipate. We ordered a couple of cocktails too, I had whiskey and she had gin. Her gin cocktail was too sweet for her taste(I liked it), and my whiskey was right on point. The bartenders were fun and inviting and provided great service. All in all definitely a good time. I’ll be back for some more soon since I live right down the road!

Great unique menu selection. The Poutine and the clam chowder were impressive. I also ordered the mussels and the were very good. I like the décor and the atmosphere… not too casual and not too dressy. Cool little bar area. I even ran into some friends from Denver inside.

I would have to say that the food was 4.5 stars but the service was below average. Really enjoyed the burger and worth 15 bucks in a resort town. The chicken pâté was great as well. Didn’t like the fries, not crispy and a bit soggy. Outstanding cauliflower get this. The salmon was a bit above average nothing really special. We had the tall brunette and she was mediocre at best. We arrived and she failed to greet us. She came and poured our water but was short a half a glass. she never returned to finish that exercise so when our friends arrived they thought we drank from their water glass. She made it over to our table some 10 minutes later, we thought she might be the busser initially and again didn’t greet us or ask is this your first visit. We ordered a bottle of wine which she opened table side but never returned to fill our glasses… strange. she simply took our order, delivered the food, and never checked back, refilled our glasses and serviced our table. I would say for the prices they charge the server needs to raise the quality of their performance. We left 20% but she didn’t deserve it.

I am pretty happy that we came to eat here. For the type of meal, the price value was just right. I hope they don’t change that business model. The ambiance was casual and not uppity. The service was attentive. For two adults, we opted to eat family style and get a taste of everything. We ordered Warm Burrata, Beer Mussels, and Hanger and Ribs to share. This was really plenty for us without feeling completely gorged. We also had a couple of red wines and cocktails, so that helped to fill us up. The cocktails are well crafted and I would recommend to just hang out at the bar to enjoy the drinks. I happened to see the Boxcar Burger. It was sizable and was very appetizing. Go for this one if you require bulk and high calories. This is a gem in terms of quality and bang for the $$$ in a place where everything is so expensive for no good reason. We will be back when ever we are in the area.
