My husband wanted German food for his birthday dinner. So Schneider’s it was. We walked in & were told to find a seat. We picked a seat & noticed how old and outdated it was. While we patiently waited for a waitress to come to our table(only 2 waitresses on a Saturday night) which is crazy, I picked up the salt shaker & noticed bugs in it dead & alive. I would have preferred to leave, but we stayed. After waiting more then 15 minutes to be noticed by a waitress I gave her the salt and she of course apologized. She took our drink order & we had to wait again until we received them. We knew what we wanted to eat & our appetizer was the potato pancakes, you get 3 heart shaped with a little serving of sour cream & applesauce. Again the wait was long. We finally get them & they were good. My dinner was stuffed shrimp(which was over priced) the stuffing was so little & burnt & the shrimp was ove cooked and rubbery. Not worth the 20 something price. My husband had the sauerbraten and loved it. What is a turn off is when you go to pay your bill the cooks(particularly an elderly women) was using her fingers(no gloves) to prepare meals. I don’t think that is very sanitary. I have no intentions of going back.

I was having cravings for German food and Schneider’s was close to some shopping me and my sister were hoping to do. Walking into the restaurant you definitely get an old school atmosphere from the décor(consisting of various seaside themes, some german fare, and a wall full of license plates) all the way to the furniture(think old tavern style). In addition, I noticed that the clientele for lunch leaned towards the more senior side as it would be safe to say that the average age of the other diners was 60+. Age aside, I was here for the food. We started with the potato pancake appetizer which were three heart shaped pancakes served alongside applesauce and sour cream. The pancakes were nice and crispy with a nice texture and flavor. The combination of applesauce and sour cream is always delicious and paired well with the pancakes. I had the Pork Schnitzel which comes with two sides which I chose coleslaw and Spaetzel. Schnitzel was fried to a pretty golden color and the pork was juicy and tender inside. Spaetzel was solid but a bit underseasoned. However the addition of the side gravy really helped the flavor of the Spaetzel. Coleslaw was pretty good as well; tangy with some really fresh cabbage and not drowned in mayonnaise. My sister dined on the Bavarian Sausage Platter with three sausages of Bierwurst, Gypsywurst, and Ocktoberfest Weisswurst. Having sampled all three from my sister’s platter, we both agreed the Gypsywurst was the best of the three with a snappy fork-piercing skin and a little heat and spice which was awesome. The other two sausages were delicious too and again über fresh with that fork-piercing snappy skin. We had to try dessert as the German Chocolate Cake was prominently displayed at the entrance to the restaurant, so we ordered one Apple Strudel and a slice of the aforementioned German Chocolate Cake. Apple Strudel was pretty average. The apple filling was good(as was the fresh whipped cream), but the pastry shell of the Strudel was disappointingly limp and not that crispy/flaky. Making up for the disappointing strudel was the scrumptious German Chocolate Cake. The cake had a really nice dark chocolate flavor that thankfully did not taste like artificial tasting overly sweet chocolate frosting. Coconut shreds were very fragrant and yummy too. A very interesting lunch(a bit of a time capsule eating experience), but good overall.

Walking into Schneiders is akin to being transported back to the 1970s. Entertaining décor al around. Good burger, fries and cole slaw. Excellent old school vanilla milkshake.

Sauerbraten was very good, potato pancake good. We like the atmosphere because it’s comfortable and quiet enough to hear each other talk. My wife liked the Ruben with sauerkraut last time more than the Ruben with come slaw this time, but she does like both.

Okay, read some good reviews, some bad. I wanted some German food and hoped the good reviews were correct. Sorry but my experience was what I read in the bad reviews, and I wanted the place to be good! Food: perogies were very good; potato pancakes seemed from a box or puréed and deep fried– not good, weinerschnitzel was tough, grizzly, deep fried not pan fried, bland-not good; same with the chicken schnitzel; kielbasa was good; spetzal had no flavor. The apple strudel was just ok. The place looks like it has’nt been touched since it opened in 1960. The ceiling tiles were all stained and disgusting. Had a nice fire in the fireplace. You can judge it by looking at the outdated exterior… may have been great 40 years ago. Time and tastes have past by this place.

Nice, homey atmosphere — I like to sit by the fire place during the winter. I come here for the rueben with a substitution(no extra charge) of a very tasty German potato salad. The rueben itself is very good; the corned beef is excellent, although I found the amount skimpy on my last visit — I hope that was simply an error — I never had that issue before. Service is always good and friendly with the waitresses wearing German garb. I haven’t tried the other things because they tend to be a bit expensive and if I’m going to have weiner schnitzel or sauerbrauten, I’ll go to a few places in the city that I know. For all I know, I’m selling this place short.

My family and I have been going to Schneider’s on and off for about 40 years now. The chicken salad is the best ANYWHERE! I was there recently and I do have to say they could probably benefit from some décor upgrades. The missing counter stools are a little distracting but that’s just me being nit-picky.

Great pierogi’s, sautéed onions, red cabbage was pretty good. I’d add one more star if there was kielbasa or a meat side to go with the pierogi’s. The atmosphere was very laid back, and enjoyable.

I was a customers of Fritzys for many years they can compete to old Fritzys in Howell. To much Americanization. The potato pancakes were shaped like hearts very dense and seemed like it had two much flower in it. The spicy brad worst was very good and Gypsy worst good the did give a very large portion of Wienerschnizel. The sides for the prices were a little small. Herring in cream sauce was quit good. Cant give place a 4 star. They have to hire more help in dinning room Visting NJ Hallandale Fl. Joe

I love this gueniue old fashioned and CLEAN German restaurant and I do not have any German blood in me but my childhood friend is… I grew up by this town but never had been there until this earlier year and am in mid-50’s… I had my fave lunch choice, the BLT on pumpernickel, so damn cheap for $ 3.95 but I had extra bacon to my liking for a dollar more. My BFF had the German burger, BIG ground beef with German spices for $ 6.50. We ordered side dishes of crisp sweet potatoes fries and Mom’s German potatoes salad” both awesome and perfectly made! All four items came to $ 20.00, very fulfilling and satisfied! Definitely will return with more friends as it is very ideal place for lunch, feel like at home, relaxing, and they made own desserts. Wished I had known more and been there much earlier in my life and more often!

Atmosphere is old and needs an update. Food was pricey and was not that good. We had the heavy potato pancakes and the fried schnitzel — we did not care for either. Service was friendly but everyone eating was elderly on a Saturday night! (I mean, everyone was in their 80’s! I felt like I was in an old age cafeteria)

We went here 4⁄27 for a birthday dinner. What a little gem! First we had their version of potato skins — roasted potatoes with cheese and german bacon. Scrumptious! We also had dinners and everyone enjoyed their food. Our son ordered a side of bacon and enjoyed that as well as their bread as well.(he’s picky!) I had the stuffed veal chop and it was very good. My wife had some fried flounder and enjoyed it very much. They make the best red cabbage I have had in years, authentic and home made. Dessert was also marvelous! Try the strudel. The chef came out to meet us since I had written earlier with a food allergy concern, and he was very nice. The décor is not for everyone, however, the place does have a unique charm about it. Service was good. They do need to replace the carpets though! All in all, a superb culinary experience, and better than eating at any chain. 4 stars!

My parents recommended Schneider’s. They lived in Germany years ago, enjoy German dishes and have been to this restaurant several times. I myself enjoy some bratwurst and sauerkraut on occasion. We went for an early dinner on a Tuesday evening in November. Service was fast(not a lot of patrons at 5pm) and friendly. Parents got the«wurst samplers» and my wife and I split a wiener schnitzel plate. The food reminded me of home cooking style restaurants and by the time we all finished we were stuffed with all the German style comfort food we could handle. Surprise: The one thing that surprised me was they don’t serve alcohol on the premise. You can bring your own if you like. Apparently they don’t serve the alcohol because they want to maintain a family friendly environment. Décor: They have a huge fireplace in the main room, lots of hot air balloon memorabilia, license plates from all over on one wall, old time pictures and what I would characterize as a warm atmosphere. Summary: Everyone enjoyed their meals. We ate too much actually as we then ordered desserts.

We just became curious to try it since we always pass it and it is something different from the sea food at the shore.(though I love the sea food there) I took pictures and you can see the décor for yourselves. The other 2 reviews complained about the décor. I think it is trying to look like a German grandmother’s living room. I don’t have any complaints about the décor. The German family who reviewed it before me got to taste Mrs. Schneider’s cooking. The other family did not. Maybe that is the reason for the difference in opinions. Obviously if the family from Germany says they are authentic they are. However authentic doesn’t always mean good. How many people reading this of ethnic origin know or has a grandma that cooks authentic ethnic cuisine but it just is not to their liking. I have been there twice. Both times my meals were extraordinarily greasy. The beer kraut could have been a little more sour. At Hallo Berlin in Manhattan they served a full meal for lunch. Hallo Berlin serves bratwurst, wiener wurst, home fries, red cabbage sour kraut, griled onions and a hard role with spicy mustard for $ 6.00 At Schneider’s they did not give you a full meal. Just 2 bratwurst, red cabbage and warm potato salad for 14.00 dollars. The Bratwurst was good but better at Hallo Berlin. You can tell a good chef by their side dishes. The side dishes here are not good and are small in portion and incomplete. I was really looking forward to the home made strudel. I had cherry.(see pictures) It was huge and filled with cherries. But I honestly could not taste the cherries because the grease was over whelming. The first time being on the Jersey shore I had fish here and it was also so greasy I couldn’t taste the fish. If you want to take a stroll off the beaten path this might not be so bad but don’t expect perfection it is pretty run of the mill.

We’re actually from Germany and we like this restaurant alot! Mrs. Schneider is a GREAT cook and hails from Germany. My(German-off-the-boat) mom swears by the potato pancakes and my(Austrian-off-the-plane) husband always orders the Wiener Schnitzel or Sauerbraten. We go about 5 – 6 times a year, whenever we hit the beaches at Avon. It’s a good family place, very low key with a high tolerance for kids and they provide buckets of crayons for coloring. I like the hot air balloon décor which is like walking back in time to 1976(down to the needlepoint pictures by the bathrooms). Is it divey and tacky? Hell yeah, but it sure is fun! I’ll take Schneider’s over a chain restaurant any day. They are good for babies and toddlers also, remember, you are not going for the ambience or the décor, just the food. One thing I really like is that they use locally grown seasonal produce in their meals. Today I had a chicken salad club and the lettuce(romaine) was green and had flavor and the tomato was not the usual insipid Sysco supplied«Flavor Saver» but an actual REDFULLYRIPE Jersey Tomato! It was quite good! Highly Recommended: The heart-shaped(adorable, makes you feel special) potato pancakes w/apple sauce and sour cream($ 9.00), weiner schnitzel($ 23.00), jaeger schnitzel, wurst plates, chicken salad club($ 7.50), apple strudel with ice cream(when they have it), the coffee is quite good. Not recommended: The cakes seem store-bought, ask to make sure they are fresh baked on premises. The ice cream is just okay.

Avoid this place at all costs. It is a German restaurant. We went there and found the chef didn’t know how to cook an authentic German dish-it was horrible. We actually argued with the chef(actually let me just call him a cook!!). The atmosphere is tacky and outdated… can I say mildew nightmare! YUCK!
