A little over a month ago, I started taking indoor rowing classes with Brock Sampson at Flywheel Fitness. I had previously taken a few classes but still felt very overwhelmed by the technical aspects of the sport. During the first class with Brock, he took a great deal of time to thoroughly explain the technique and form necessary to be successful with indoor rowing. He was very detailed and clear in his explanations and patiently answered all questions. While doing the workout, he gives each student a great deal of individual attention and provides specific feedback. He doesn’t let you row wrong, which I can’t honestly say about other instructors. Each class that I’ve been in has had students with a varying degree of experience and he is able to help each at their own level. Brock is incredibly passionate about rowing and you can tell that he wants his students to develop an understanding and love for the sport, as well. It’s a great workout and uses muscles that I didn’t even know that I had. Brock pushes his students(and makes them want to push themselves) but also makes it lots of fun! I didn’t expect to love indoor rowing but wanted to stick with it to compliment my running workouts. Since starting classes with Brock, I have found that I am enjoying it so much more than I expected to and hope to be able to stick with it.

I started indoor rowing classes a few weeks ago and was fortunate enough to have Brock Sampson as an instructor. He takes time to explain technique and offer one on one advice. He thinks of analogies and real life connections to thoroughly explain a concept. He makes sure to give a clear visual so you know what to work towards and if there is any confusion he thinks of a different way of explaining things. Brock’s attention to detail is phenomenal and he does a fantastic job of correcting the little mistakes that could potentially lead to poor rowing form. If you are a beginner rower Brock is the one to learn from. He makes sure you master the basics before advancing to ensure you have a solid foundation and skill set. I look forward to continuing classes with Brock in the future.

I have been a rower and a cox for many years. I have received many lessons from different coaches over the years. Yet, the private lesson I received from Brock Sampson at Texas Rowing Coach was superior to all previous lessons I have received. Rowers know that they need a coach to look at their technique and evaluate it for any poor rowing habits one may have picked up over time. In most private lessons with experienced rowers, the coach meets you on the water after you have launched your single scull and the lesson begins from there. This was not the case with Brock. He took the time to sit at the dock, holding the end of my boat while observing and offering coaching to improve my technique. When on the water, unlike past lessons, I has fully prepared with the changes he suggested. He followed me in his launch, coaching me so that the technique stuck with me. Rowing is a complicated sport and bad technique quickly creeps into your rowing style. Brock took the time before I launched to examine my rowing stroke and make adjustments at the dock. The rest of the time spent on the water was observing that I was implementing his suggested changes. I work at one of the university’s in the area in the athletic department. I can usually get a feel whether a coach is worth my investment in time and money. Brock was well worth my time, and willing gave of his time to me. Overall, I am a much better rower after one lesson with Brock. I have changed my stroke and body alighment per his instruction. I am faster and more efficient on the water. I highly recomment Brock to anyone at any level for a private lesson from Brock. This was by far the best rowing session I have had on the water. And I have had a lot of lessons. Jonathan Riley

Coach Brock is a gift to the rowing community — for both experienced rowers and wannabes. His dedication, patience and enthusiasm embolden and inspire new rowers. He has an amazing natural connection with children, and they love him. His maturity, live-what-you-preach commitment, and sense of humor make him an effective and entertaining adult instructor, as well. Add, to that his fitness-lovel, and CONSTANT continuing education and training, and he is always able to provide beneficial advice for the experienced rower, as well. I have volunteered with Coach Brock, rowed in boats with him, and have been coached by him, individually and on a team. He makes the enjoyable, but sometimes frustrating, sport of rowing more of a joy. Thanks, Brock!
