Sometimes this place is crazy crowded & loud, but the salsa bar is tops, the drinks are good, and they make one of my favorite mole’s in town. :)

They bring you chips and then make you pay for the salsa. They also charge you for tortillas. Food is below average. Too many good restaurants in Austin. Don’t stop here. Had a party with 4 people eating and they charged us 15% gratuity.

My friends and I love to come here for margaritas and food. Wish they would install done new benches and chairs though. I always get the al pastor. Always tasty and the tortillas are fresh!

Neither Authentic Mexican nor Authentic Tex-Mex food here. Go to any number of places very close by, they are much better. 2 stars for being clean and it is aesthetically pleasing. Hippies serve the food and appear to be put off at having to serve anyone, terrible service. They played Bob Marley while I was there. Bob Marley is fine, but not at a Mexican food joint. When the music died down in between songs I could hear the cooks playing real Mexican music. There’s at least. 4 or 5 places nearby that are ten times better. Anyone will do.

This has been my fav Mexican dinner place for years now. I would not call it Tex Mex really as alot of the menu has a very interior feel but others might disagree. I used to get their enchiladas and Chile Rellenos which were good but its really about the Tamales. I do not get anything else there now, because those are as good as home made. Sometimes during the holiday rush they can be in limited supply but I usually can get some kind of tamale plate. Because seriously they have so many kinds and thats a real bonus where so many places just serve one kind. And a few of them are vegetarian which is even better. The only down side is it is hard for me to eat anyone else’s tamales because this is what I have grown used to. Whenever we have guests from out of town this is where I bring them.

Hands down my favorite frozen margarita in Austin! They know whats up! The only thing I didn’t like about this place was that their service was just«ehhhhh». The frozen margarita makes up for it though. You can also get it in a pitcher to share :)

Escabeche is zee best, you better save me some garlic! If you see someone at the salsa bar fishing out that good stuff, it’s probably me or my worst enemy. Margaritas, watch out, they kick you off yo toes! Fajitas Al Guajilla all the way, splitzees!

Ugh. This place is a whole lot of meh. I was assured by a colleague that this place would be «AWESOME» but when she«mmmm”-ed in delight when she heard that the fish tacos were made of tilapia I knew I’d been duped(by then I was trapped though). The only good part of this experience is we got our party of six seated immediately for dinner. This place is huge. There is a serve yourself salsa bar but it is just ok. The salsa is really spicy and that comes from someone who is consistently accused of making her food too spicy. Free chips and salsa are consistenly replenished but water wasn’t refilled often enough for how spicy the salsa was. The waiter was really nice but he was pretty slow(criminal when I was that hungry). I got the Bill Clinton special which was so sub par, even for standard tex mex. The only thing I liked even a little was the tamale. Just skip this place.

A guy on the place told us to check this place out in Austin(we’re from San Francisco) and he recommended that the«Tex-Mex» here was really great — for us, it was just meeh. I ordered a carne asada burrito and Dad got the fajitas. He was happy with his but mine was just OK. Nothing bad, but nothing great either. Salsa’s were good and Coronas were cold. Three stars.

My boyfriend and I have become faithful patrons to this place. We used to always get the carne guisada(which is really great), but when we discovered their breakfast tacos… my goodness, our worlds were changed. The breakfast tacos are incredibly cheap($ 2 before 3pm with any additional filling after the 2nd is $ 0.35) and really good!!! We have come here countless times for these tacos, and they have been consistently great. They really load them up, so you get way more than what you pay for. — the girlfriend The salsa bar is my jam, particularly the brown one(burnt chipotle I believe). It’s AWESOME on the tacos and goes rather well with any taco that has chorizo. Also, I highly recommend the nopolitos(cactus) on your taco. It’s da bomb. — the boyfriend

3.5 stars. The food: had the cerveza fajitas. really tasty well seasoned and tender beef. def recommend. the downfalls were the 2 tortillas they gave me. the tortillas were tasty, tender, and warm but seriously, 2 tortillas for a huge plate of beef/rice/beans? Also, the chips weren’t the tastiest although the salsa bar seemed pretty good. The ambiance: seemed pretty popular and busy for a weekday night– not amazing, not bad. The service: Friendly but forgot our silverware and extra tortillas that were ordered. felt like a little of an afterthought. overall, really solid food that could have been awesome with more tortillas, better service, and better chips.

It took me forever to try this place and I’m so glad I did. We were wanting to try a different place on 1st but there wasn’t parking near it. Oh well. We tried the ceviche, there was WAY too much lime in it and also, it wasn’t fresh lime juice either. I was very disappointed. Oh well. I don’t really like the salsa bar but I guess it gives the option to try different types and see which you like best. On to my favorite entrée, the fish or shrimp fajitas. Oh how I love this dish. It comes with grill vegetables under the fish OR shrimp(you can do half/half also) in this amazing sauce. It’s so good. We got one fish and one shrimp to share and it was a lot of food for the 3 of us. It’s so good. Also, you get your tortilllas inside, freshly made. I will be back. :)

Polvos was my first Tex Mex experience moving to Austin, and it remains one of my favorites to date. The tortilla’s are homemade and delicious, they have an eclectic salsa bar, and the fajitas are bomb. The salsa bar easily beats every other Tex Mex restaurant I’ve been to and the addition of spicy pickled veggies make it even better. The #1 thing to order for yourself or for the table is the cerveza(beer) marinated steak fajitas with veggies. The meat is so flavorful and extremely tender. It’s a huge order that taste great the next morning in a homemade omelet so don’t hesitate ordering it because the leftovers are something you actually want. Get to the south first restaurant while checking out the growing street. Tip: Salsa bar, my favorite salsa is the roasted tomato as it gives the chips and fajitas a smokey deep flavor and it’s crazy addicting.
