I wish I could say I liked Lembas. The young woman at the order window was friendly. The trailer was an affable avocado green/purple hybrid. I’ll even admit that I had the good fortune to try this place out on a morning when the temperature was in the upper 70s, with a nice little breeze blowing and that contributed to the optimism i felt when sitting down to eat. So what’s the problem, you ask? For the $ 7 I paid for their American Breakfast I expected a little more than a scant sampling of scrambled eggs, pork belly, and dessert scone. The eggs didn’t wow me, locally sourced or not. I likely could have whipped up the same thing in my own kitchen. The pork belly, to its credit, wasn’t a tough chew. The flavor was appealing without the unwanted add-on of excess salt. I got one of their orange cranberry scones hoping for something a little better than the deep baked wedge I got. The flavors were spot-on but a little flakiness would have made it worth noticing. I can accept the fact that it is a trailer business and not some 5-star ritzy joint but still, assembling edibles in a basket similar to a Fran’s hamburger fries basket, especially when the proprietors bill it as American Breakfast, is a disappointment. More of a generous meal would’ve made me consider a visit to Lemba’s more than a one and done proposition. As it stands all I can really give it street props for is that it is positioned in an aesthetically pleasing spot at the Burnet Road Farmers Market. If you’re lucky enough to stop in for breakfast on a sunny day like I did and park yourself under a white awning park bench as I also did you can at least do some admirable people watching. As for the morning fare, I stand unimpressed. At this time I regret to inform you Lembas is Lame-ba.

Honestly the best kept trailer lot secret in Austin. You turn off into Pour House Pub, which very few people know about in itself, and order up a Po Boy after some drinks or a hangover meal at Lemba’s. But… you get to enjoy this in a secluded sort of awning. Unless it is the Thursday Farmer’s Market. I have no idea how in the world I am able to find the newest bakery week by week, but it keeps me Unilocalin’ fresh. Alas, I came across Lemba’s on some early week Unilocal hunt geared toward my favorite sorts of establishments at which to partake in order to Unilocal: bakeries. What is really nice is the extremely local touch. When I walked up to Lemba’s, which is tucked away behind 6701 Burnet, the same lot as Pour House Pub, there was a «be right back» sign. Jo was running out to get more eggs! The simple menu and health-focused theme is quite unique to a trailer. This brings me to my actual critique. I don’t much enjoy sweets, and I also don’t like health all the time, so what brought me to order a sugar-laden item that also happens to be gluten-free? Well, having the honor of Unilocaling about a local establishment, of course. My orange cranberry scone was a little chewy and sticky, but the flavor was spot on. I thought it was a little heavy on the salt, but the tartness of the cranberries played nice with the zestiness so intrinsic in orange when used as a seasoning component.

The GREENEGGS + HAM for $ 5 is a steal. The eggs are blended with local kale(hence green eggs) and scrambled. I think they were cooked in coconut oil. They needed salt but I’m sure most would appreciate being able to control that themselves. The«ham» is local pork belly and was delicious and cooked well. I also got a cranberry scone and it was really good. Their pastries are all gluten free(which I am not) and are sweetened with honey or agave nectar in lieu of sugar. I tried a sample of the chocolate chip cookie which I will be buying several of the next time I am in the area.

My prayers to the Patron Saint of Gluten Free Pastries have been answered. Lembas specializes in gluten free goodies and everything about the owners and this trailer is cute. The light green trailer is found off Burnet Lane inside the back entrance to the Farmer’s Market. Amy and Jo are co-owners and all food they offer is gluten free. During my visit, I purchased two cinnamon bun muffins and two slices of pumpkin bread with the idea that I would freeze one of each for later. However, my pastry deprivation drove me to devour every delicious item within a few hours. The ladies use almond flour in their cookies, muffins and breads which results in a very moist baked good. I would love for them is to develop a muffin or breakfast bread with some chunkiness to it in the form of raisins, coconuts, shredded carrots or nuts. Lembas is only open for breakfast right now and their chalkboard menu also lists egg dishes, cooked cereal, smoothies and coffee. If you have a Go Local card or if you check in, you get a free coffee!
