Probably my favorite Chinese restaurant in all of Austin! The last time I visited Hunan Lion after a trip to the green belt, our party of 5 ordered enough food for a small army (including, but not limited to, 5 egg rolls, 5 soups, an order of Crab Puffs, 3 full entrees, noodles, rice, and a whole DUCK!), all for under $ 100 including tip. The food arrived at a steady pace and was all super tasty. The only thing I didn’t love was the wrap for the Peking Duck, but the duck itself was delicious.
Our waitress was supremely friendly and even hugged us on the way out when we told her how much we missed being able to come here all the time now that we’re North Austin dwellers.

Ok so let start by saying the food was good and it came out in a timely fashion. The customer service was good the only thing was the awful smell when entering the restaurant it almost makes you not want to eat also is very dusty in the restaurant.

Loved this place until yesterday. Waitress was rude. Told us to stop giving her our order because she would not be able to remember so much if «you keep talking». Then a few hours later the food poisoning hit! Two people out of four are currently throwing up. This is either from the crab puffs, egg rolls or honey chicken given those were not eaten by all 4 of us.
Quite unfortunate given this was my go to. Will not return.

Hunan Lion is one of the best Chinese restaurants on South Lamar. They are fast & the quality is great. I’ve tried almost every main dish on their dinner menu & it’s always great.
My only suggestion is that I wish they delivered! Still can’t find a Chinese joint in S ATX that delivers!

Caveat– I am a vegetarian. I had not eaten here is 15 years, no real reason just sort of forgot about the place. It’s ambience could use some help but the service was super friendly and attentive and the food was great. I had tofu in orange sauce, veggie dumplings and veggie egg roll. All were very tasty. I also got a side dish of steamed veggies and they were very fresh. My friend got sesame tofu and she said it was great. The portions are also HUGE.

The shrimp in the Kung pao is fresh but sauce way too thick & salty. The sweet & sour pork was too dry and sauce too salty.
The waitress keep getting our orders mixed up with the next table but did not even bother apologizing. When the entrees came out wrong again after getting our appetizers wrong, my husband touched the chicken on the dish with his hands, wondering what it was and I called the waitress to tell her both our orders were wrong, she just too the food right to the next table. Ugg — I would not want to eat something that has been touched by another’s hands. But, the waitress seem to treat it like a normal occurrence. Overall, way too salty!

This place is GOOD!!! First time here. I came for lunch before an appointment. The service was good. The good was great! For $ 7 I got a cup of egg drop soup, egg roll, crab Rangoon and combo (shrimp, beef, and chicken) fried rice. Everything was packed with flavor! They didn’t skimp on the meats either. Service was fast (as I was pressed for time). I will be coming back!

This place has tasty food when they get it right. But too many mistakes on delivery recently. I have had them mess up with wrong item or forget items 3 of last 4 times. Its annoying. They need to be more careful and get things right. Im going to stop ordering for them as I hate not getting exactly what I order. I would check your order before you pay any driver. Its probably not what you ordered. I tipped the dang driver too for bringing me incorrect items. Drivin me carazy. Shame on you Hunan LIon. Get a clue.

Ordered the twice cooked pork dinner last night with the dinner combo (rice egg roll and hot and sour soup). The egg roll and soup made me feel like a thousand dehydrated Suns, in the middle of the Sahara dessert, like Nemo out of water. But hey, it did it’s job and filled me up. Would order again

Nice place for sit down. Good value on lunch specials. Hot and sour soup was good, egg drop was better.
Appetizer ribs were large (much larger than regular Chinese ribs) but were a bit dry. Would not order again.
Honey chicken ok. General tso chicken was delicious. Better with white rice. Fried rice was sticky and bland.

Recently moved back to the area. Haven’t had good Chinese since I left FL. Thank you Hunan Lion!!! I order lunch special General Tsao OMG it was great! Perfectly seasoned and crispy. The serving portion was generous and it came with 2 egg rolls. The pork fried rice was good too, I wish it more vegetables though but overall it was good and how sentiment is shared by coworkers. Wish they would expand their delivery area. But I will be back!

We were craving Chinese food in 78 704 and this place hit the spot. Super friendly servers, very clean, and to top it off the food was all fantastic.
We ate a bunch of different appetizers to start it off and shared lo mein and Mongolian beef. We were here on a Sunday and although it was not crowded they were still busy. I recommend this place for classic Chinese

Food never disappoints, fresh ingredients, tasty and served hot, super huge portions. Probably the only place I trust for Chinese aside from PF Changs.

I’ve ordered from here twice and have not been disappointed yet!
I order the Egg Drop Soup [although I didn’t get the little fried pieces :/​] and it is yummy! I also get the Beef with Broccoli and the sauce is SOOO good! The meat is cooked well, which makes a difference.
I will be a return customer :)

While the food was good and the staff was nice I can’t get over the fact that the orange chicken was disappointing. It didn’t taste particularly good, was overly fried and the meat wasn’t chunks of chicken, but instead looked like small popcorn chicken bits (maybe i got the last of a batch). This is my go-​to item for Chinese food so it unfortunate that it wasn’t good here.
Note: I have ordered ahead of time every time and they are great about having everything ready, the order correct and it being ready to eat.
I’d recommend the items below which were good:
1) Beef and broccoli
2) Fried rice
3) Lo mein.
4) Hunan Shrimp

I LOVE this place. Growing up in Austin, I have been coming here for over 20 years and it never fails to disappoint. It’s comforting that with all the changes in Austin, this place is still in its original location and prettying intact to what I remember from my childhood.
It’s a very nice Chinese restaurant. Even though it’s changed ownership through the years, you wouldn’t know there difference in the quality of the food and ambiance of the restaurant. It looks the same from my childhood, but it’s not dated and you would never know that it’s been around that long.
The portions are very large, the food is delicious, and the prices are reasonable.
I love this place and am always happy that, even though it may be a couple of years between my visits, the quality of the food and friendliness of the staff never changes.
