So the good news is that George’s isn’t terrible anymore. They changed ownership and now the campus dining organization, O’s, runs it instead of Texas Coffee Traders. They have been doing a better job. You can actually get things here that aren’t too bad. The coffee’s okay, and the breakfast tacos are okay. They actually have some decent lunch specials, though. They’re usually pretty affordable and give you a good amount of food. I usually opt for the Santa Fe Turkey Panini. Turkey, tomato, onions, chipotle sauce, and *real* avocado. Whoa. You don’t expect that of a campus dining place. All in all, if you must eat at George’s, you actually can get decent lunch items there.

Pretty good Lunch entrees. 5 dollars and it comes with a drink. I usually go with the Chicken Avocado Wrap because its the most reliable thing on the menu. I’ve eaten at better places though and this is convenient only because it is next to the music building.

George’s is the café tucked away in the UT Law School, across the street from the Music Recital Hall. I have spent many, many hours in this place, studying and collaborating with other UT students. Breakdown: you can print here, it’s cheap. 10 cents I think? Also, there are a lot of tables, lots of couches and the varied table/booth setup is rather nice. Flat screen TV stays on CNN on mute. Main reason it gets 4 stars: ITISNEVERFULL. I can’t study in classrooms, I can’t study in libraries, I can’t study in places that make me feel like campus. This little café is a great way of lying to myself, making me believe I may not be in hell, when I really am. I get lots done here, it’s quiet, they’ll turn the music down if you ask them. The food: it is overpriced. Overall, it’s decent… the hummus and bagel chips are good, but that could be me lying and making myself believe it’s good to justify spending like $ 6 on hummus and freakin bagel chips. They have lots of packaged sandwiches and stuff like that which is nice if you, like me, are never, ever prepared or remember that you have to eat at some point in the day.

Quite possibly, the worst overpriced breakfast tacos, ever. Embarrassingly small portions – five crusty potatoes the size of pencil erasers. And this is an improvement from the tater tots previously called ‘potatoes’. Crappy institutional cheese. And I don’t want to know about the sad chickens who laid these eggs. Sad, sad little beasts. I can taste their tears. Avoid. Not fit for Austin.

Quick Tips: If you don’t have to, DON’T GOHERE. This is a place that still exists due to desperateness of hungry law students. Breakfast tacos are mediocre. Veggie friendly options, but not taste friendly. Salsa is gross. If you are a law student at UT, you will likely be forced to eat here at some point due to sheer hunger: Accept it as fate. Food: The hummus and breakfast tacos are slightly below average. The salsa is just gross, with cilantro overpowering everyhting.. One thing i have loved is the Minestrone soup. — they change their soups daily. Tomato Basil is served every day, but mediocre. Service: So friendly — something about truly happy and friendly people make you feel a little better about swallowing truly crappy food.

The only reason I go here is for the coffee… Other than that this place is over priced and the food is gross… I like that they try to be organic and all but come on! PLEASE send your cooks to culinary school or something. Hell, I’ll give them some lessons in my kitchen… I am hispanic and I can make Waaaaaaay better tacos for so much cheaper than this place. Also, breakfast tacos should have the ingredients scrambled together and not just mushed in a taco with dry cheese. I’d rather eat food from a dump in east Austin…

Up until last week, this place blowed. The coffee sucked, the atmosphere was terrible, and the only good thing about the food was that it was overpriced. Wait a minute… However, something changed last week. I walked in at 8:30 in the morning to get my usual small coffee with soy and shitty, overpriced bacon egg and cheese taco and I see a sign that reads; «Try our new Maple Sausage on your taco this morning!». I take the bait, and something amazing happened… I WASHAPPYWITHSOMETHING I ORDEREDATGEORGE’S FORTHEFIRSTTIMEIN A YEAR! I can’t speak for the rest of the menu, but they hit a home run with the sausage, egg and cheese taco. Unfortunately, the coffee and atmosphere still suck. I do appreciate the big screen in the back though. If this place wasn’t so close to the law school and the music school, they’d be in trouble. The best thing about the place is the staff.

If there’s one thing that George’s should be praised and fancied for is the Fried Chicken. Fried Chicken Fridays have become a very personal indulgence I look forward to all day. Mind you, I am actually quite a picky eater and take food criticism and gastronomy seriously. This Fried Chicken definitely cuts the mustard. One of the greatest feats of Fried Chicken making is to preserve the juiciness of the chicken while achieving a truly crispy texture. This is something George’s Fried Chicken undoubtedly achieves. It’s got a very authentic and natural flavor. But is by no means one note. There is a slight, and very pleasant, smokiness that gives the chicken a lot of depth. I highly recommend you to follow my Fried Chicken Friday routine. It’ll put a pep in your step. And give you a compelling reason to stay at school on Friday afternoon.

Oh George’s. You are the bane of my existence, but I am entirely dependent on you for sustenance. If it weren’t for this places proximity to the law school(and music school), I can’t imagine that anyone would go here. But convenience always wins with crazed students. The food is generally pretty mediocre at best(with the exception of the soups which are pretty tasty in my opinion) and overpriced. BUT! The staff is super friendly even though they’re stuck dealing with me and my colleagues day in and out. I imagine that must be quite a feat– I can barely stand myself most days.

So there I was, surrounded by Libyan guerrillas in the desert, my last camel dead and out of ammo for my AK-47. Blast! I surrendered, reluctantly, and was forcibly taken to a prison camp near an oasis. I was fed waste and the scraps of bone given to the dogs and only survived by the narrowest of margins. And it still beat the food at George’s. Seriously, the asparagus and cheese sandwich is horrific. The asparagus was put in with the hard, unchewable ends still attached and the bread was so over toasted that it was like crunching concrete. Maybe the lime stone monster from the Neverending Story would enjoy it, but I personally was not impressed. The coffee here is terrible, which is funny, because they are supplied by the same place that supplies one of my favorite coffee shops(Bennu). The people are really nice, however, so I feel kind of bad dissing this place, but the food is bloody awful. Petitions have been passed around the law school to close the place and start over again, alas to no avail.

This is the café in the UT law school and it is surprisingly good! So far I have developed a serious addiction to the chorizo breakfast tacos which are SO good. I try to limit myself to once a week otherwise I could eat them 2 – 3 times a day. The tacos help hundreds of law students make it through a day at law school every day. :) The salsa for the tacos is extremely delicious. They also have individually sliced and packaged tomatoes and lettuce for the law student on-the-go so you can add those freshly to any sandwich you get. Final thing: by the check out register they have spreads/sauces for your sandwiches like chipotle mayo, etc and they’re FREE! It’s wonderful.
