The prices at Van Michael keep going up and up and up. If I had Connie Britton’s hair, I’d be happy to pay that much. But my hair is average at best, so the search for a new salon continues. Suggestions are welcome!

Moldy towels! If you ever smell anything at all nasty about a towel in a hair place (probably anywhere else) run screaming! You don’t need that cut today that bad! This place gave me some kind of disease on my neck, boils which took forever to figure what was going on and how to get rid of it. Disgusting, and I couldn’t get another cut anywhere due to the gross disease factor.

If you have long hair and wanna keep it that way, Nilan is the girl for you! Lexie does amazing color, I trust her implicitly!

I had been getting my hair cut at this salon for over a year. I’d seen a couple of different stylists and colorists. On my most recent visit, it was a Friday afternoon and I got caught in typical Atlanta traffic, as well as behind two wrecks. I called to let them know I was running late. I was told that would be ok and I should call back if I wanted to reschedule. Upon arriving outside the salon, I went to pay for parking at the meter, and an elderly woman who was having a hard time figuring out the meter was in front of me. I spent several minutes helping the woman to pay for her parking, during which the salon called and I told them I was literally right outside and would be in after paying for parking. When I rushed inside, I was 17 minutes late. I was rudely greeted by Denise, the colorist. She informed me that we would «see what she could do in the time we have left.» When I was seated and began telling her what I wanted, she interrupted me, rudely told me we wouldn’t have time for all that, and suggested I wait for an hour to see if she could fit me in later. I asked at that point to speak to a manager. I was taken up front where Denise addressed two young women behind the front desk and said «Which one of you wants to be the manager?» One of the women stood up and told me there was nothing they could do because «half my appointment was over.» The one nice thing I can say is that after I insisted, they did agree to reimburse me for my parking. Their rudeness and unprofessional conduct was astounding. I will NEVER go to this Van Michael location, or any other ever again. I will say that I HIGHLY recommend Kelsey at Adore Salon, nearby on Highland. She was able to fit me in on short notice, was very professional and courteous, and did a fabulous job on my hair. I will be seeing her from now on and won’t waste any more time and money at Van Michael.

I have been coming to this along for about 4 years. I had been looking for someone to trust and help my falling out, damaged hair grow and be healthy. My first visit was with Nilan. Within 5 minutes of meeting her, we realized I graduated from high school with her brother. Over the past years, she has been so detailed about what I need to do to help may hair grow healthy, but all while listening to me. She does an amazing cut and is the only person I trust to cut my hair. The whole staff in the salon makes you feel so welcome.

I have had more bad experiences with hair salons than I could possibly count. I’ve had my ear cut, highlights left on too long, rude/​snooty stylists, etc. I’ve tried several in the Atlanta/​Virginia Highlands area, and never left happy.
However… Van Michael Salon was a wonderful experience. Everyone was nice and an expert with hair. I especially enjoyed the neck and arm massage. I saw Denise for color, and Courtney for a cut. While it was a bit pricey ($ 250ish for both), it was completely worth it! It was by far the best hair cut and color I’ve ever had. The highlight color looks AMAZING, and the layered cut was perfect!
GO TO THIS SALON! Seriously. You won’t regret it!

Nilan is hands down one of the most experienced and intelligent stylist who has touched my precious locks. Paying close attention to detail and never cutting too short Nilan will make your hair not only look stunning it will feel sassy too. Taking the time to educate you on how to maintain your precious strands just goes to show how she is passionate about what she does.
If you’re new to Atlanta like I was almost three years ago and are looking for someone you can trust with your hair – Nilan is the one to book at Van Michaels.

I’ve been going to Nilan since she was at New Talents in Buckhead with a slight hiatus when she moved to the Highlands location. When I started a new job in Midtown, one thing I was most happy about was that I could start going to see her again. She really cares about the health of my hair and takes the time to discuss what I want from my cut and ultimately what I want from my hairstyle in the future. She’s great at progressing your cut to where you want to be. She gives great tips and instructions on how to care for your hair in-​between cuts.

Well I don’t really want to let the secret out … but I just have to give a shout out to my girl Nilan! I’ve been going to Nilan for about 2 years now since she came to the Highlands from Buckhead. I had been in a rut of the same long layered haircut for years… Nilan convinced me to get bangs and that totally transformed my look for the better. I got so many compliments from friends and acquaintances that I’ll never go back! She and I have the same long shaped face and she was keen enough to recognize that bangs would suit me. Nilan is a bang MASTER! She takes the time to listen, is artistic and fully confident to offer great suggestions. As others have written, she also knows her products and has always recommended great Aveda products that really suit my hair type. Love love Nilan!

Nilan is unbelievable. I hesitate to write this review because I don’t want the world to know how great Nilan really is. However, I can’t keep a good thing to myself. Nilan has transformed my hair. I went in based on a recommendation I had received for her. Within 8 months, we had transformed my nest into a healthy, shiny head of hair. Her knowledge of Aveda products and eye for style makes her a perfect 10 in my book. She truly cares about her clients, even outside of making you look beautiful. I would recommend Nilan to anyone looking for a great cut, but more-​so for the entire experience she brings. Additionally, I’m always treated quickly and with respect from the moment I walk in the door. I won’t be going anywhere else!

This is my first Unilocal review, and I’m reviewing because I have to let everyone know how great this place is. From the moment I walked in the door to the moment I sat down the entire staff was genuinely friendly and welcoming.
Christy was my stylist today, and before she even did anything she was on her iPad helping me find the perfect look. She walked me through different ways I could wear the same haircut, and when she made certain I was completely comfortable with the look, she led me to get shampooed and treated me to a 5 minute head massage. Feeling completely relaxed at this point, she led me back to begin cutting.
The haircut was admittedly long (she admits she is a perfectionist) but I didn’t even notice the time going by as we were in conversation the whole time. When she finished I almost didn’t even recognize myself as we completely changed my look, which I now love.
The atmosphere of the salon is upscale and trendy, with edm music playing in the background. ⁵⁄₅ stars will definitely return.

I have had long hair for 31 years and decided to go short this week. SEAN BRUNO cut my hair and I absolutely LOVE it. I brought pics of what I wanted and he cut my hair exactly, to a T, like the photo. He took his time and really made it perfect. I am so glad I cut my hair, and now I’ve decided no one will touch my hair but him. I’ve had too many blah haircuts from other hairdressers. His was very artistic and absolutely perfect.
I had some media/​press events that week and I was confident and not at all worried about my hair. I used to stress over it all the time. He also showed me how to easily style my hair. Thank you SEAN!!! I will be back to see you in a few months!

I went to Seoul for a haircut and she showed me how to style it and offered a suggestion as to the cut. Boston did my highlights and yes, it’s pricey but it is so worth it. Long ago I went to Rob now in Midtown for a haircut but everyone there is good.

Love this salon. Only because it employees Tami. She is awesome and so sweet. I’m always happy after having my haircut with her and she gives the best scalp massages. Everyone seems to get along with one another here and is very accommodating.

My experience with this salon was short but ohhhh so not sweet.
I set an appointment for a haircut with Jerry based on a referral. I received two text messages from VM confirming my upcoming appt today at 3pm which I really appreciated.
I arrived around 2:30pm today. I parked on the street ($ 5), walked in and was greeted by two ladies. I introduced myself and gal with long brown hair looked at me a bit oddly and said my appt was with someone else. (The name was similar, but in fact, not Jerry.) I said, «I specifically reserved this appt with Jerry based on a wonderful recommendation and I was told by the receptionist when I booked the appt that everything was all set.» The woman told me that Jerry was not even there today– so– who ever booked me on Tuesday afternoon totally jacked up my appt.
The receptionist apologized and then said that I could rs for Jerry’s next (evening) appt which was 2 weeks from now. I was not ok with that, expressed my discontent, and at this pt, she did not seem really empathetic for this inconvenience and the fact that their receptionist messed up. She never offered to get a manager for me to chat with or place me on a wait list for Jerry– just «her next appt is xyz», take it or leave it kind of vibe.
I was really excited about my haircut at VM with Jerry but left the salon with my hair untouched and feeling frustrated and disappointed. I will not be going back after today’s poor customer service experience.

Put all of your anxiety aside… Van Michael will take good care of you and make you look fabulous. I just moved to Atlanta and was freaking out about having somebody new touch my hair. I checked a ton of places out and luckily, I chose wisely. I love how there’s a ton of people that write reviews about how awesome their hair turned out but all they have to show for it is some vague profile picture with not-​so-​great hair… so to prove my results, I have included a pic I took afterwards under the Van Michael Unilocal photos.
So for starters, I called a few weeks in advance and I talked with a sweet accommodating fellow which started out the great impression. We discussed my price point and that I didn’t want «New Talent» so he could match my goals. I told him I wanted someone that specialized in beautiful blondes… thus he gave me Boston. And for my cut, he gave me Mekaylah, which thanks to other reviews, I had already heard how amazing she is. Oh, and FYI, don’t try to use their website to book if you are a new customer… that only works if you are established.
Thankfully, when I arrived, I was able to use their free parking that is sectioned off in a lot up the street next to the CVS… No stressing about rushing around to find a parking spot. I was instantly welcomed in and given a tour and while I gowned up, they got me a drink. Boston came to get me within minutes. So, for you less hipster-​types, he is going to walk over with his Duck Dynasty beard, dressed in black with a prada belt on… do not make any hasty judgments!!! He is gentle, married with cats, an artsy background, and knows what he is doing! Just sit down, enjoy the clever conversation, trust him, and let him give you kick ass color!
After my rendezvous with Boston, he walked me over to Mekaylah. Her and I instantly hit it off. She asked the right questions to figure out what I wanted, and BAM!, in minutes she took my haircut to meh to fabulous foxy lady! This is probably the best cut I have ever had!
I think my partial highlights ran me about $ 110 and my cut was $ 55ish. I ended up getting a product to take home so my total bill was $ 185.
So, all my fears are gone and I am totally sold. Van Michael – Boston and Mekaylah – I am yours!

About what you’d expect from a Van Micael salon — great customer service and fantastic hair cut (thanks for fixing my botched do, O’Neill!). I had to give it four stars because it’s a bit spendy compared to some equally great haircuts I’ve had in other cities (Seattle, Chicago).

I absolutely love this salon! My hair cut and color and highlights look and feel pretty amazing thanks to Jaza (colorist) and Chanda (stylist).
I must say that everyone associated with Van Michael’s are experienced and professional.
Color and cut ran about $ 200, $ 255 total with one product and tip. So, bring your wallet and enjoy the overall experience and lovely results.
I will be returning for permanent straightening and more.
