If you love chicken sandwiches than Ben’s Brown Bag is the place for you! Delightfully fried with some pickles and garlic mayo. Nothing fancy, just fresh ingredients and a perfect fry. What, only $ 5 for the sandwich?! Oh yes! I’ll definitely be back to try to the burger which looks pretty legit. Great friendly staff as well!

I heard of this place and was in the area tonight, so I decided to give it a try. First of all… This place gets a bonus star for serving Cheerwine as a fountain soda! I had the Chicken Sandwich, Sour Cream and Cheddar Chips, and the Kool-Aid of the Day. The chicken sandwich is AWESOME. The fry and tenderness are almost perfect. The coating has a slight peppery taste, accentuated by the seasoned mayo. The bun has the right amount of buttery goodness to round out an awesome combination of texture and flavor. The chips were fried well, if not a little dry(i don’t know if this is the right word to describe the texture). The seasoning was the issue with them. I tried hard to taste the cheddar and sour cream. The Kool-Aid had the right amount of sweetness and flavor, not like the syrup I have had at other’s homes in the past. I will definitely be back.

I really wanted to love Ben’s Brown Bag. and after eating there. the«A-OK» pretty much hits the nail on the head. I like the concept, a to-go restaurant in midtown with a nice patio if you have the time to chill — there’s quite limited parking however. The menu is also pretty limited, only about 5 sandwiches are offered(all $ 5), the rest of the menu are toppings($ 1-$ 2) for said sandwiches, the chips offered($ 2), and drinks($ 2). The limited options didn’t really bother me, all the sandwiches sounded delicious and when I’m hungry a sandwich always hits the spot. I chose the BLT and the BF had the Boom Chicka Chicken sandwich, which their sign alleges: «The Best Chicken Sandwich in Atlanta!» …Hmm — not really; it was solid, but we’ve both had much better at several other places, the chicken was a bit too dry for me, but I really liked the buns — for both sandwiches — there was a slight sweetness, yum! the BLT was also solid, fairly good, but how can you go wrong with a majority bacon sandwich? We also each ordered a side of the homemade chips, I had the sour cream & onion — it didn’t taste anything like sour cream and onion at all, too plain. I also tried the cajun flavored chips which were better, cajun flavored, but if you’re looking for a kick, they’re a fairly mild cajun. To drink we had their«Kool-Aid of the day» — the BF and I couldn’t pinpoint the flavor, but it was good — sweet and thirst quenching. Everything together — the burger, toppings, sides and drinks ends up a bit pricey. For two people it’s about $ 25, which isn’t a great value for the amount of food or if you’re looking for cheaper eats. The staff was great though, very nice. Our orders were taken promptly, and we didn’t wait long at all for the food. The cashier even let us sample the kool-aid just to make sure we would like it; we didn’t even ask. All in all I’m a little disappointed based on how great the reviews are, but I’d be open to coming back if I need a bite on the run.

I’ve been wanting to try this place since it opened and I finally got the chance! When we arrived, Ben was there to great us and was so incredibly proud and knowledgeable about where their meat came from, the fact that the peanut butter and jelly is made in house and many other impressive facts. I love when a restaurant owner is transparent and proud of their product. My boyfriend got the Sloppy Joe which uses Brasstown Beef with a slice of cheddar on top. I got a bite and it was delicious — ethically raised beef definitely has a distinct, amazing taste. I got the«Hot Chick» sandwich and I ate every bite. We also ordered the salt and vinegar chips to share which are made in-house. We ordered at the window and our food was ready within 5 minutes. I see that some people are upset with the«15 minute parking» sign but come on people… there are about 4 spots in front of the restaurant and only a few tables — it becomes a space issue, they aren’t trying to be rude. This is a great addition to the West Midtown food scene and I will be returning to try the other menu items!

I used to frequent this place when it was Curly’s. I loved being able to order at the window and sit down for a quick lunch outside. I can no longer do that. When I stopped by Ben’s today there were only two tables and they were both occupied. Also, the sign clearly states 15 minute parking so they obviously prefer you get your food to go. I ordered the sloppy joe and salt and vinegar chips. The sloppy joe was decent, but I like mine a little more tomato-y. It was big though with heaping mounds of meat on it. The chips were really good. They were plentiful and had just the right amount of seasoning. I spent $ 10 on Sandwich, chips and a Mexican coke. I don’t know if I’ll be back, probably if they had more seating. I don’t really like eating in my car.

Super impressed with this place. I live in the neighborhood, and it took me a while to finally head on over. I had the following: –Fried chicken sandwich with pickles, garlic mayo, lettuce, tomatoes –Chips with salt/vinegar flavor –Peanut butter and strawberry milkshake Food is really high quality with generous portions for the price point. It’s less expensive than Star Provisions and Yeah Burger with equally good ingredients. The chicken sandwich, for example, came with heirloom tomatoes – a really nice(seasonal) surprise. The chicken had some good spice to it, and the chips were well seasoned.(I appreciated that the vinegar flavor wasn’t overpowering, as sometimes happens with vinegar chips.) The milkshake was REALLY good. It’s nice when peanut butter tastes like, you know, actual peanuts. Only nitpick was I needed some napkins in my to-go bag, as the sandwich was deliciously messy. Totally coming back here again.

I am a big fan of Ben’s Brown Bag. This is a great addition to the neighborhood. It’s close enough to work in Midtown that I can pop over and grab a bite to eat quickly. The food has always been really good. I’ve tried the Boom Chicka Sandwich, Turkey Burger, and the Pork Sandwich. All of the sandwiches have been great. The cheeseburger is next on my list to try unless I get swayed by the daily special as often happens. They offer potato chips(called fries on the menu) as well. You can get them with a choice of seasonings(cajun, salt and vinegar, sour cream and cheddar, sour cream and onion). The chips are not too greasy, but sometimes it’s hard to taste the seasoning. Personally, I would prefer fries or tots with my sandwiches. If you like mayo, ask for them to put garlic mayo on your burger or chicken sandwich. It’s phenomenal. Parking is extremely limited. There are only a few spots right up front. If these are full, you are on your own to find a place to park. I think a lot of people park down 11th St.

My hubby John and I decided to look at what the new restaurant digs were that had such awesome design/layout. we were a bit hesitant at first until the kind Ben opened his window and started pitching to us what his Brown Bag’s were all about. We were sold. We stepped closer and saw how affordable the food was. All the sandwiches(They seem like thinner hamburgers to me?) cost $ 5 and you add condiments to it for $ 1. We tried to Sloppy Joe, Chicken, and PB&J. The PB&J is even sloppier than the sloppy joe but he makes his own peanut butter and jelly so I don’t feel gross for eating it afterwards. All his products are locally grown/hormone free. freaking love it and it doesn’t cost you an arm and a leg to try to be healthy. They even make their own chips! I had the salt & vinegar but it was a bit saltier than I prefer. I HIGHLYRECOMMEND the peanut butter milkshake. Freaking good and I’m not a huge peanut butter fan. It’s $ 4 though and doesn’t fill up the whole cup it comes in so it makes you feel sad. Fortunately it tastes good. but when a sandwich is $ 5 and a milkshake is $ 4 it makes me hesitant to pay for that extra milkshake. But trust me, you have to try it. Hubs & I are definitely gonna be regulars and recommend this shindig to all of our friends and already have!

Two things really struck me about this place. 1) They serve cheer wine. 2) The owner thanked me, genuinely for my business and welcomed me back. There is a constant carousel of restaurants opening daily in Atlanta and you never know which ones will make it. Since then I’ve been paying close attention to which places actually say thank you. Ben’s is in a class of their own. I ordered the chicken sandwich, and yes, it is that good. It gives Chic-Fil-A a true competitor and given their stance on a few issues, this place is an excellent replacement for me. The owner let me know the chicken is fresh daily from a local organic farmer. It was prepared immediately and though it took a few minutes, it was worth the wait. They have Mexican coke, you know, the good stuff. The fries, which are actually chips, are like crack. I ordered the cajun and the salt/vinegar and then tossed them all together. Next time I will try the cheeseburger. I saw another patron enjoy it while I waited for my chicken sandwich. It looked like cheesy beefy goodness.

I was very sad when Curly’s closed… I really loved their fried chicken, but the next best thing that could’ve opened up is a quick burger spot. This place still only has 4 parking spots in the front and a few tables for you to sit and eat if you like. After much deliberation, excitement, and hunger Cherry L. and I ended up ordering the following(good for 2 meals): Chicken(special of the day 5⁄5 stars) — For those of you that think the pickle bite is the best bite of a Chik-fil-a sandwich, then you’ll love this sandwich! I love their pickles! In general, I’m more of a beef burger fan, but this ended up being my favorite part of lunch! Very pleased with the juiciness of the chicken and the overall flavor of the burger. Burger with American($ 5 + $ 1.50) — 4⁄5 stars — The beef here is no hormones from NC. Ben does an excellent job of creating the mid-range burger. When I want something quick and not McDonalds, this is the spot I’m going to hit. It was juicy and delicious and will definitely come back to get my beef fill; but probably with more toppings. side note: my roomie(Rohan S.) ordered it w/o pickles(and his bag said no pickles) but he ended up peeling them off his sandwich. Sloppy Joe — 3⁄5 stars — A little too sweet for my taste and very hard to eat. Pork — 1⁄5 stars — This sandwich was very dry and stringy and had a ‘different’ flavor to it that just didn’t jive with me. I ended up adding some Bubba’s Spicy BBQ so that I could finish eating it. Sloppy Wizzy Chips — Deep fried potato with cheeze whiz and beef on top! Very delicious, and the chips stayed suprisingly crunchy – only problem is that I felt my arteries clogging with every delicious bite! Overall — I was disappointed that all of the sandwiches were a little soggy by the time we got home, which is a less than 10 min drive away. I enjoyed the chicken and beef burgers – but would recommend a topping or two, sloppy joe if you like a little sweetness, and stay away from the pork.

First, it was LeRoy’s Fried Chicken. Then, it was Curly’s Fried Chicken. Now, it’s Ben’s Brown Bag. What’s with this space? I hope it’s not cursed. I liked LeRoy’s and Curly’s and now I like Ben’s. Hopefully, Ben will be here to stay. Ben’s Brown Bag opened April 2013 in the take-out spot next to La Fonda. Ben’s looks exactly like LeRoy’s and Curly’s once did, save for a different storefront sign, wall menu, and color scheme(red, yellow, brown/burnt orange). Everything else looks to be the same including limited outdoor seating, no restrooms, and limited parking. Speaking of parking, there are a few spots directly in front of the restaurant that are marked for 15 minutes max. This is presumably for pick-ups, which is mainly what this place is intended for. You *could* try to park in the spacious La Fonda lot in the back(La Fonda and Ben share the same landlord) or, if it’s the weekend or after hours, at the law office next door. Do so at your own risk. The less risky option is to street park in unmarked spaces along either 11th St. NW(near Six Feet Under) or Edgehill Ave. NW(near the Humane Society). Ben’s menu is small and straightforward. The specialties are sloppy joes, hamburgers, BLTs(bacon, lettuce, tomato), pork sandwiches, and PB&J sandwiches(peanut butter and jelly). There are a variety of toppings(cheese, relish, bacon, etc.) and the only sides are fries. The menu says«fries,» but they’re actually potato chips. Chips come in a variety of flavors. Sandwiches and burgers and only $ 5 each, but the toppings seem a bit pricey at $ 2 – 3 each. Ben classifies his food as «fast food» and that’s what this stuff essentially is, packed in a large brown bag with a printed smiley face and your name written on it. Just like mom used to do? For fast food, though, the ingredients are a definite step up. The bread is baked fresh and the meat is Brasstown(NC) beef, antibiotic and hormone free. It’s comfort food, plain and simple. I recommend the hamburger or sloppy joe. The sloppy joe is my favorite — soft, lightly toasted bun filled with savory sloppy joe meat. The meat is not as finely ground and«smooth» as most sloppy joe meat I’ve eaten. Instead, it’s got a slightly thicker and chunkier consistency. The sandwich is full of flavor and delicious. For a sloppy joe, it’s not too terribly messy to eat and the bun holds everything together relatively well. The fries(chips) aren’t bad and the portion sizes are generous. They are $ 2 a tray. Fry/chip seasonings include cajun, sour cream & cheddar, sea salt and vinegar, and sour cream and onion. I’ve tried both the sour cream & cheddar and sea salt and vinegar — tasty little suckers. Ben personally recommends the sour cream & cheddar. The potatoes are deep-fried and seasoned. Some of the potato slices/chips are crispier than others. I like the ones that puff out from the center. They’re softer and pack more flavor. Beverages($ 2) include Mexican Coke(in a glass bottle), lemonade, sweet tea, and Kool-Aid. The lemonade is money. Not too sweet and ultra refreshing with the crushed ice. Ben works on-site and may be the person who serves and/or cooks your order. Sometimes, orders do not come out so fast, with wait times upwards of 15 minutes. Credit cards are accepted, though I’m not sure if there’s a minimum. Overall, I like Ben’s Brown Bag and am happy it opened. It’s a good place to swing by for a quick lunch or dinner on the way home from work.

It’s probably a good thing that I don’t work any closer to this place. Because I would eat here way too often. No kidding. I went to Ben’s Brown Bag with some fellow Unilocalers one afternoon for lunch. A couple of people in the group had been here before and loved it, so I had high hopes for Ben’s. And Ben’s delivered — big time. Ben’s is located in the space that used to be Curly’s(and LeRoy’s before that) on Howell Mill. So you know what the parking situation is like — nonexistent. Luckily, when I arrived on this afternoon, there was a primo spot available right up front. Must have been my lucky day. While waiting for the rest of the group to arrive, we scoped out some seating(as that is also quite hard to come by for 7 people) and perused the menu. While the menu is limited, I’ve only heard great things about everything on it. After having some serious trouble deciding(ahhhh, BLT, Sloppy Joe, Pork Sandwich…), I decided that I’d stick with the classic and go with the cheeseburger. While I had some serious order envy when I saw that BLT, the burger was very very good. It wasn’t anything fancy, but it was juicy and delicious. And what else can you really ask for?!? The fries here(aka chips) come in a variety of flavors. I ordered the Cajun and promptly devoured the entire order, but my favorite might have been the salt and vinegar. Not crazy vinegary and sooo good. Also, Ben is a fun guy. If you get the chance, chat with him for a few. I will absolutely be returning to Ben’s in the near future. The BLT and the Boom Chicka Wha Wha are calling my name.

I’ve always been an ardent proponent of the separation of church and plate. Gluttony is apparently a cardinal sin, and thus, there’s simply no room for Jesus alongside two all-beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, and onions on a sesame seed bun. For this reason, I’ve always thoroughly despised businesses that publicly impose their religious beliefs on customers, such as Chick-fil-A, and made a habit of boycotting them long before it was ideologically hip to do so. Of course, this leaves slim pickings when I have a hankering for a fried chicken sandwich. Fortunately, the recent introduction of Ben’s Brown Bag, along with its gloriously delightful«Boom Chicka Wha Wha» sandwich, solves this conundrum quite nicely. Food: The menu at Ben’s Brown Bag is small, but mighty. They feature a daily special, such as the aforementioned Boom Chicka Wha Wha, but the standard menu includes a Brasstown Beef Burger and PB and J, Pork, BLT, and Sloppy Joe sandwiches. Sides consist of various types of fried chips, including cajun, sour cream and cheddar, sea salt n’ vinegar, and sour cream and onion. Available drink options are bottled soda, lemonade, sweet tea, and«kool-aid of the day». Consistent with its namesake, all orders are served in a brown bag with your name on it. During my visit, I had the Boom Chick Wha Wha, a side of plain chips(special request), and a Mexican coke. The chips were tasty, but the sandwich was exceptional– to the point where I’d like to start a petition to get that thing on the standard menu. Service: Very personable and eager to please. All orders are placed at an exterior ordering window and patrons pick-up their food from an adjacent window once their name is called. The two gentlemen working during my visit were willing and capable of describing the various menu options, happy to oblige the use of Scoutmob, and also made an effort to check up on us after we had finished eating. Atmosphere: Aside from the limited hours of operation, the only aspect preventing me from giving this place a solid 5 star review is the lack of shaded seating. Ben’s does not have any indoor area accessible to patrons, which is fine as long as you provide some semblance of shade and reasonably clean outdoor dining facilities. During my visit, only one of the four tables on their patio had an umbrella and all the tables were coated in a slimy film. Cost: Inexpensive. For the most part, a single person can get out of here with a full meal for about $ 10. All sandwiches are $ 5, sides are $ 2, and drinks are $ 2. Other: Ben’s Brown Bag is located in the space formerly occupied by the now defunct Curly’s Fried Chicken. The business is closed on Sundays and hours are rather limited the rest of the week: Monday-Thursday, 11AM-7PM, Friday, 11AM-8:30PM, and Saturday, 5PM-9PM. There are four parking spaces located out front, but overflow is also available in the La Fonda lot next door. For those wishing to save a few bucks, they are currently offering a Scoutmob promotion for a free side of sloppy wizzy chips($ 2 value). Online ordering is available via GrubHub.

«I’m a BLT down sort of person, and I think you’re looking for someone a little more pheasant under glass.» — Frankie and Johnny(1991) I love me a good sammich, y’all and Ben’s got that going on and more. This little stand by the side of the road is just what the west side needed. There are plenty of great options when you have at least an hour to spend at a sit-down restaurant, but sometimes you need to get something to go, or just want to have a quick bite. Ben’s fills this need easily. Warning, there is little to no parking, and the neighboring businesses have signs posted about the lots behind being only for their businesses… But once you order a sandwich and some killer homemade chips, you’ll worry less about being booted and dive into the deliciousness that is BBB. After much stewing over choices, and a recommendation from a friend, I opted for the BLT. And I have to be honest here, it should be called the BBBLT. That’s a whole lotta bacon(not that I would EVER complain about that). Add in fresh lettuce, heirloom tomatoes, tomato jam AND garlic mayo and I practically inhaled that mother. I was only slowed down by the breaks for cajun chips, which were equally delectable and had there not been so many of them, I would have eaten every last one. I washed it all down with their not-too-tart-not-too-sweet lemonade — quite refreshing on a warm Spring day. I’ll be back for more. We bogarted their patio for a good 90 minutes as we had a large group and celebrated a birthday as well — and Ben didn’t complain. Hospitality and a killer sandwich — that’s what I’m talking about.

Ben’s Brow Bag is where Curly’s used to be. So it’s a tiny stand next to La Fonda. The parking lot is small. They only allow you to park for 15 minutes, so you need to find some street parking if you are going to take longer than 15 minutes. If you want to risk it, you can park in the La Fonda lot next door. Don’t blame me if you get booted or towed though. Ben’s Brown Bag sells sandwiches and burgers. I tried their burger. It comes on a decent bun: Martin’s Potato Rolls. They seem to use organic beef as well. For just the meat and bun, it’s $ 5. Pretty cheap huh? Well, if you add any more toppings it’s $ 2 each! That is so expensive. So if you want to add cheese(your choice of American, cheddar, or Whiz) it’s $ 2. If you want lettuce, tomato, and onions, it’s $ 2. If you want to add relish it’s $ 2. You get the point. So your burger can potentially be $ 13. I tried the burger with American Cheese and Sweet and Spicy relish. The relish doesn’t add anything to the burger. I suggest you not to waste $ 2 for it. Just get the cheese if you must. They cook the beef to about medium well. I liked the taste of the meat. It was nicely grilled and had a decent beefy taste to it. It looked small though. It was also dry. I wished it was juicier. I didn’t watch them make the burger, but I hope they don’t smash the juices out. Also, if you eat a lot, just get 2 plain burgers for $ 10. That should satisfy. They do have sides called«Fries.» The fries are actually a variation of British vernacular. Those«fries» are actually«chips.» How clever. They have several different flavors you can choose from. I tried the salt and vinegar, and that tasted good. I liked the taste of the vinegar in the chips. For drinks, they have Coke and other sodas in a glass bottle. You can also get their homemade lemonade or their sweet tea. I think they even offer Cheerwine now in a glass bottle. The seating looks limited and the parking looks limited. They give your food in a brown bag, just like their name implies. Overall, their food is decent. I liked it. But can their«cheap» burgers compete with Yeah! Burger next door, Bocado down the street, Flip a few blocks away, and others? Who knows? Maybe next time I should try their Sloppy Joe or PB&J.

Definitely an upgrade from Leroy’s(who used to inhabit this location). I think the concept for this place is kind of like«fast food menu with quality ingredients.» They aren’t the only people doing this concept in the world. Hell, they aren’t even the only people doing it in the neighborhood, but they do a pretty good job. Their fries are actually more like homemade potato chips. They have several flavors, but I got the cheddar & sour cream. They were good. Reminded me a little of Lutz chips in Missouri which is high praise from me. I also had their blt and added a burger patty to it. Definitely a solid meal. A minor criticism is that generally I like my bacon a little crispier(especially on a blt). Red koolaid, awesome. Service was friendly, but I had to ask for napkins and a straw on separate occasions. The food is definitely solid.

Yum! They’ve got some quirks with the menu they need to work out(fries are actually chips, it’s cheaper to add a beef patty to the BLT than add bacon to a burger, etc), but overall, this is a solid new entry into the competitive Atlanta burger market. I highly recommend the BLT+burger patty combination route. Not only is it a better value than building the same combo from a burger starting point, it comes with delicious tomato jam and some seriously garlicy(and seriously delicious) garlic mayo. I’m glad I ate with friends who like the white stuff too, because you could go to town on this condiment. The BLT is also loaded with bacon(I’d guess about 5 – 6 slices), and the tomatoes are fantastic. It seems strange to wax poetically about tomatoes at a burger place, but the day I was there, they were dark and almost purple-y, with that great vine ripened taste. You can’t always tell when a higher quality ingredient is used some places, but you can definitely taste the difference here. I didn’t order any fries(which as others have pointed out, are actually homemade potato chips), but I sampled those of my dining companions and loved the different flavor options. Ben talked with us through the window a bit, graciously giving us even more garlicy mayo(gratis, thanks Ben!), and shared his burger making pedigree with us(which included stints at the Vortex and other Atlanta burger destinations I can’t remember right now). This location has been cursed with good spots quickly going out of business, but I hope Ben’s weathers the test of time, because I’m already craving another one of his burgers!

Wow. Delicious! This is the location where Curly’s fried chicken used to be. Bummer that they’re gone. but they’ve been replaced with something better! I ordered a turkey burger with the«garden»(lettuce, tomato, onions) and added the garlic mayo I saw listed under BLT. Plus a lemonade. My lunch mates got lots of cajun chips, so I got to munch on a few of those as well. Overall a filling, savory lunch. My turkey patty was thin but perfectly crunchy on the outside and moist on the inside. It was bigger than the bun, which I thought was awesome. I hate when a patty is smaller or mis-shapen and you get bites of bread and toppings but no meat. This meat didn’t get lost :) The bread was super fresh and not crumby. Ben(Yes, THE Ben) told us there’s a ranch spice mix in the turkey burger. it made it burst with flavor, seriously. I had juices dripping down my fingers but I didn’t let them go to waste. licked ‘em before the napkins got to ‘em. Sorry not sorry! The lemonade was delightful. not too sour, not too sweet. just right. The chips were good. We dipped them in the garlic mayo: fatkid: which was tasty. I’d like to try actual toppings on the chips next time. Definitely worth a try if you’re in the area, and if you are on the run(and lack of parking may force you to get it to go) you’ve got it in a brown bag anyway!

Ben’s been in business for twelve whole days as of this writing. And he’s doing things correctly. This is «fast food» done right. There are only five things on the menu(soon to be supplemented with the arrival of turkey), and you can augment those five things with a choice of something like eight or nine different toppings. Truly. If you want a sloppy joe with some bacon and two extra beef patties, you can order that at Ben’s. But Ben’s is not meant to be an exercise in abject, meaty hedonism. I mean sure, you could get the aforementioned gargantuan sandwich(and you should, if that’s what makes you happy). But the important thing to remember is that Ben strives to make all his food as preservative and hormone free as he can. Ask him why. Ben came out to talk with me for a while. His enthusiasm for his food ideas seems to be grounded in good reasoning. He has aspirations to bring his dining ideas to a larger audience. I hope he succeeds. The results of his efforts are tasty. I had a Sloppy Joe with some cheese sauce. It took less than two minutes to be served to me, and yes, it arrived in a Brown Paper Bag. It was phenomenally good. It is such a *sloppy* joe, there is no way to pick this thing up and eat it. You’re going to need a fork(which is also in the bag). And frankly, that’s the way it should be. It’s a good thing that Ben gives you enough napkins. The meat is hormone-free beef, and it is both tangy and sweet(again, just like a sloppy joe should be). Delicious. And not too expensive, either. I look forward to the next one. Holler if you’re coming with.
