Best Mexican cuisine in Athens! My burrito was the size of the Taco Bell chiwawa. And only $ 6. Fabulous.

Looks may be deceiving, but the food here at La Estrella is not. Found in a small not so good looking shopping mall, La Estrella is a diamond in the rough. When you go inside, the first things you notice are the murals around the walls. While some may view them as tacky, I find them an integral part of what the restaurant stands for: authenticity. This family owned business has good service along with a relaxing atmosphere. The food here is very good and as close to authentic as you will be able to get in Athens. To add along with the good food are the good prices. The most expensive dish(seafood dish) is about $ 16, a very reasonable price for a college student.(Also forgot to mention that serving sizes are big.) The overall product served here at La Estrella is worth the visit(and your stomachs). If your in Athens for either a football game or some other reason, come to La Estrella.

I didn’t get sick or enjoy my food. Many better options for identical cuisine.

Love this place. It is a dive but it is clean. Never a wait. Food is always perfect. Staff is friendly. Always Latinos eating here, which is a great sign. Try the tostadas. Also try the shrimp cocktail, it is similar to a ceviche, full of fresh stuff.

Returned for dinner and had the fajitas and they were exceptional. Also spit enchiladas verdes with my wife. We asked for 2 steak and 2 chicken, for some reason they combined the two meats across all 4. They were still excellent. I believe part of the problem with the enchiladas is that it is so authentic that the server’s English was very poor, but who cares the food was excellent and the server was nice.

I was very disappointed with this restaurant. I ordered a shrimp quesadilla, which fell far short of my expectations. Plus, I had to endure the hostile glances of my friends for having suggested the place as I nibbled at my meal. They STILL broach the subject from time to time, though they’re letting me slide, chalking it up to a brief lapse in judgment.

I would say this is the best Mexican restaurant in Athens. La Estrella is one of those places that has the double benefit of looking scary and being secretly amazing. The atmosphere and the locale are, well, let’s just say they’ll never put a Barnes & Noble in this shopping center. Regardless of whether you are the kind of person who thinks that is a good or a bad thing, you will find that the food is generally awesome, especially for Mexican food(try anything with camarones.) The people are very nice. I think this would be a great place to bring kids if you have some around that are hungry.

Great authentic mexican in an older strip on Hawthorne. I wish I had trie this place when I lived in the neighborhood. The tacos«mexican style» are excellent. The enchilladas and quesadillas are also great. While I enjoy some of the offerings from Aqua Linda and La Parilla, neither is as enjoyable or authentic as La Estrella. Maybe someday I’ll convince my wife — who will only go to La Parilla — to join me!

Currently my favorite mexican restaurant in town(slightly edging out El Paisano). Good prices and authentic mexican food paired with a big serving of horchata. La Estrella is a comfy little place located in a quiet strip mall type area. Many people rave about Agua Linda but I just find that place too bland. I usually just go for the basics(taco, burrito, enchilada,) the servings are good. They now have a liqour license! I haven’t tried their margaritas yet but I plan on changing that. The wait staff are friendly and the place is clean. This is more of a place to go and get away from the downtown area and have a nice and comfortable sit down with yourself or with friends. Highly recommended!

I hit up La Estrella with a group upon a local’s recommendation. This place is definitely a dive, earning bonus points for the hole-in-the-wall atmosphere and cheesy oceanic paintings covering the establishment. I had a shrimp quesadilla – a generous amount of shrimp filled the warm tortilla, mixed with plenty of melted cheese. The accompanying yellow rice was solidly edible, while the refried bean heap lacked flavor. Also, my sweet tea tasted like candy, not tea. I thought my teeth were going to rot after the second sip. Definitely not wishing upon an estrella that I lived closer to this so-so spot…

My favorite Mexican place in Athens. Even beats out Agua Linda, of which I’m a huge fan. Modest and authentic. Servers are always jovial and the Crazy Murals all over the walls will keep your eyes wandering. I heartily recommend El Pollo Monterrey. I mean, Jesu Cristo. Pounded chicken breast covered in a robust red sauce with sauteed onions that lend a sweet aftertaste. Bit of guac on top, and killer rice and beans on the side. Though I sometimes ventured out to the Camarones al Mojo de Ajo, or enchiladas or burritos, 9 out of 10 visits saw me devouring El Pollo Monterrey. Never let me down. Seriously. This place gets me high. Bottled beer. Cards accepted.
