Finally, an unassuming place that serves me sushi with the rice the correct temperature: warm, body temperature. Not cold. It’s amazing how many places serve sushi with cold rice, but not excusable. The harshest criticism I can level at a sushi bar is if I reach for the soy sauce. I didn’t touch it while here. Good fish + properly made rice + reasonably priced soju = a good night for me. Would definitely visit again. Stop settling for cold rice on your sushi, people. And stop drowning it in cheap soy sauce and fake wasabi.

Very good sushi place. Around the corner from my place. Fast service and plenty of options on their menu.

Great sushi, awesome kimchi, lots of amazing options. I’ve never had a bad meal here. My wife and I bring people here wherever they come to visit. Oh and the mochi green tea ice cream is the best.

Go somewhere else before you Gowasabi. This place is genuinely not good, its honestly embarrassing. I was passing through Astoria and figured I would give this place a shot. My boyfriend and I split the Baby Octopus Salad to start off with. Prior to being served the waitress explained it was not grilled, this is how I’ve generally been served in the past. It came out cold, dry and flavorless. For an entrée we split the Chirashi Dinner(which comes with soup and salad) and Dancing Eel Uramaki Roll. Well, the lettuce of the salad was brown and the soup was actually flavorless. We left both on the table untouched. The Chirashi was fine, nothing to talk about. On the other hand, the Eel roll was embarrassing. Maybe the chef simply wasn’t feeling well that day because the roll was cut crooked — so crooked I had to take a picture of it. For a relatively empty shop, the service was pretty awful(the waitress seemed pretty awkward and uncomfortable). It took quite awhile to be served too.

I made a large order including two sushi entrees. It doesn’t even matter what was wrong with the rest of the items. The fish was not fresh! The avocado in the Cali rolls, a turgid brown. The tuna, oddly discolored and, I took a little nibble I’ll admit, distasteful, not fresh. Unfortunately this was a late order and the restaurant was closed by the time I’d sampled the sushi. When I called the next day to ask for a collection of the unopened Cali rolls the operator was argumentative and said the manager would not allow refunds a day later. It seems to me the chief obligation of a sushi restaurant is to ensure that the sushi is safe to eat and fresh. The rest is of little consequence. I’d avoid at all costs.

Good food and good service. Make sure you stop by. The tuna tatara appetizer was very good. And so was the Astoria roll.

Well not my best experience. I ordered some rolls to go today and asked for no wasabi but extra ginger and spicy mayo. After half an hour I finally got my food. So when I got home I found wasabi in there, no extra ginger but ginger dressing instead of spicy mayo. That was frustrating. Spicy maaayoo… cmon

I came here for dinner one weekend. A friend recommended this place. The décor is modern and homely. The staff was helpful and kind. We had several sushi rolls for the appetizer, and I can’t recall all of them. They all tasted good, not great, but were decent. The pork gyoza tasted like the frozen ones you can pick up at any Asian grocery store. The seafood spring rolls were good. I had the Buta-Kimchi Yitame Teishoku as my main course. It is a stir fry consisting of kimchi and pork. With all the appetizer I ate, this was a good portion for dinner. However, it seems a little small for a dinner portion in general. It was very delicious and had a good amount of spice. I would come back here to try their Japanese dishes. Overall a decent experience.

I highly recommend the Teriyaki beef plate: well cooked with fresh vegetables and in a great size, it has everything you need. To sum up, Gowasabi is an Asian restaurant to put in your favorites !

This is one of the best Sushi places in New York. The greatest part of this place is that Burmese foods are on the way as it is introducing little by little by the talented chief along with the top quality Myanmar beer available which is really hard to find in NYC. I recommend Gowasabi personally and professionally. A must place to go in NYC.

Three. four stars. Before Mokja had opened up on Broadway, Gowasabi was one of the few places that you were able to get some Korean dishes in Astoria. Sold as a Japanese restaurant with your typical sushi, they also have a ton of Korean dishes to feast on such as Bibimbop, Tofu-Jjigae and Bulgogi. There’s a ton of Korean comfort food to be had here. And of course there a million other items on the menu, it goes on for ages. Anything Japanese such as Tonkatsu and Gyudon, etc. all have a Korean touch to them like the Buta-Kimchi Yitame Teishoku Special. The sushi and maki roll menu is endless. They have everything from teriyaki, kaki fry gyoza, tempura, and my favorite kara age that you would find at an Izikaya. If you want Asian food and something else other than your typical Chinese take-out or the other sushi spots run by Chinese folks, Gowasabi is a good spot to hit up with a ton of options. Also, the staff is fairly friendly and helpful. I’ve never had any bad service and I’ve been here a handful of times the last five years. The décor inside is also friendly and calm. It’s not really meant for big groups but if you’re a couple or two or four it’s comfortable.

Perfectly reasonable East Asian cuisine in casual surroundings. Unagi roll was fine and not overloaded with sauce(as many places do.) Gyudon came with decent miso soup; unfortunately the gyudon meat was a little stringy, although it was seasoned correctly and came with the requisite toppings. Not worth going out of your way for but a fine choice if you’re in the area.

Good cheap comfort Japanese/Korean food. They have really good specials and it isn’t too expensive. The food is average but it’s comfort food! I had the spicy tuna tempura roll-good but huge due to rice! And the bento box special -«lots of food. I like the veggie gyoza.

Great location. Had to get my sushi fix since my lunch at a manhattan place left me feeling empty. Fresh. Yummy. And they come in «sumo» size. Nice sake selection but sauv blanc works for me. Eddamame not drowning in salt, the shumai was hot and tasty. The sumo rolls are delish and filling. I’m happy. Minus one star for the delayed service– I will be back
