Great food, wonderful service and festive atmosphere. With a party of eight, everyone left full and happy. Looking forward to returning.

Worst part: the owner who smokes cigars at your tableside and the ripoff fish by the pound for $ 42. Best part of our meal Saturday July 30 was the free starters of hummus, feta cheese and pita chips, plus the $ 17oz. Bud Lights. We chose this place because of the outside dining, and can select from two restaurant menus: the Synaxis menu which is more upscale and the next door restaurant owned by same family that has gourmet sliders. No sooner do we sit down there is a man that sits right next to us smoking a cigar! Not a cigarette, but a cigar. We move to the table furthest away(there were NO other people eating there at 7pm on a Saturday). When the server returns we question whether a diner can smoke cigars near the front door and in the dining section. She said nothing she can do. We ate a crab cake slider for appetizer which was OK, and there was something spicy that I didn’t expect or care for. I ordered what I thought was a one-pound snapper for $ 28 that included 1 Greek style mixed vegetable. Several of the fish on the menu were unavailable and if there were any specials, they were not suggested by server. I settled on the snapper; when my dinner came out the fish had head/tail and capers, and I specifically asked for no head/tail and didn’t expect capers. They quickly removed them but there were still a few capers missed, and there were many, many missed bones left in the fish. The fish was pretty nasty. Not well seasoned, the nice skin that usually adds flavor was lacking, and it looked pretty unappetizing; a white mess of unseasoned bland fish. And absolutely no garnishes on the plate which just looked wierd with a big plate of white. The kickers came after the meal… 1) the cigar patron they couldn’t ask to quit smoking was THEOWNER, who came up to us and introduced himself and said he’s sorry the smoking bothered us(but not sorry enough that he stopped!)… AND when we got the bill, that $ 28 snapper was $ 42! 1.6 lb. uncooked. The server never advised that the snappers vary in size or advise that the meal may be a lot higher than the menu price. It was such a ripoff and really wasn’t even good. Would definitely not recommend this place.

Food was good(although some dishes not available)…but don’t expect to get the pricing on the website, which is «out of date.» In particular, the Prix Fixe is 3 course, not 4, and there was no «this month only» dinner for two special. We were only shown the Prix Fixe menu after specifically requesting it… the server had to dig out an old copy. Thursday evening… we were there alone for three hours, so I guess business isn’t so great.

This place was ok. The place looks like they spent a lot of money to decorate but it’s unfortunately ugly. For some reason the night we were there there were several gnats buzzing around our food which was irritating(it’s winter and we were inside). The pita platter with dips and fresh vegetables was really great!(with the exception of the rock hard toasted pita). The vegetarian stuffed grape leave were really good too. The fresh fish was delicious. I’ll go back but maybe not until the weather warms and sit outside.

We went to the bar side of Synaxis which they call Bar 660. Its a very large bar which is great for groups, great service & a pretty cool feeling all around. We came here after going on the Ghosts of Asbury Park tour at Paranormal Books across the street. Rumor is that the downstairs bathrooms are haunted as well as the windows that face the street. Wanna know more? Go on the tour. Anyway we were happily surprised $ 7 for a pint sized rum and coke, $ 8 for some humus and pita bread. All in all a solid bar that I would go back to however other than the ghost that I didn’t get to see it was just a solid C+ so thats why 3 stars. Had we eaten or experienced more than drinks then I would give more.

8 dollars for 4 small mozzarella sticks straight from the frozen food aisle? Ridiculous prices, rip off portions for well below average quality food. First and last time. Adiós

When dining out with another couple local to an area where you have only spent summers, it’s only polite to cede the choice of dinner venue to them. Even when Unilocal tells you not to. I didn’t want to belt out that Synaxis looked like a bum trip* when I looked it up for the phone number. I reserved judgment. Then the food came. We went for the trio of dips other reviewers have mentioned. A really palatable hummus gave me hope that this meal would be better than expected. The pita wedges toasted rock-hard made the hummus kind of dangerous to eat(I feared for my teeth) so I sort of ate it with a fork. The menu lists a wide variety of whole fish, prepared different ways. My man tried to order one and was told they were out of it – it wasn’t in season, according to our awkwardly obsequious server. Second attempt, also out of it. He settled on some kind of shrimp thing. Our friend tried to order one of the whole fish that was available, and the waiter talked her out of it. Would the fish’s head offend her? Its bones and eyes and cheeks? He made it sound as unappealing as possible; I was picturing her forking a fish skeleton in the manner of Heathcliff the cat. The whole exchange really dampened my spirit of adventure, so I ordered tilapia cooked in parchment. As any novice cook will tell you, a parchment envelope is the hands-down easiest and practically infallible way to cook a flaky white fish. As long as you don’t overcook it, you’re golden. Fish fail! Big surprise. The whole thing was flaccid and flavorless, much like the evening. I would go very far out of my way to avoid this extremely expensive and absolutely underwhelming establishment. — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — - *Décor is best described as Beverly Hills mall by way of Mykonos, circa 1985. The pounding bass from the adjoining nightclub added an extraspecial oomph(literally) to the atmosphere.

Came here for drinks and apps with my husband and everything was delicious from the dirty martini to the complimentary cheese and olives — yummy! Live entertainment and dancers on the weekend evenings too was a nice touch.

My son and I were looking for a restaurant for some appetizers, while we were waiting for my wife’s train to arrive from the City. We both like Greek/Mediterranean food so we thought we’d give Synaxis a try. We were thoroughly disappointed! We ordered shrimp bisque, Lebanese style meat balls, and a shrimp over spinach. The soup had a film over it, as it may have been sitting in the bowl under a heating lamp. It was too thick, too«tomato-ey» and no discernable level of shrimp. The waiter told us that the meat balls, served with a yogurt sauce, was«the best I ever had. They have a slightly sweet flavor». They were sour. The sauce was watery. They were served with toasted Pita bread that was too hard to chew, tasting like stale cardboard. The shrimp appetizer tasted very good. But, 3 shrimp over a small serving of sauteed spinach for $ 21.00 was just ridiculous. The only reason I am giving this restaurant 2-Stars is that the restaurant staff is exceptionally friendly and attentive. The food is bad and way over priced.

Three of us ate here shortly after it opened and all of us thought it was pretty bad. One had lived in Greece for many years so we went looking forward to authentic Greek food. The only good part was a mixed appetizer.

This one is a bit tricky. The first question is why this place is not busy? The décor is very nice. The service is better than average and the food was very good. We had a medditteranean fish called lavraki with grilled vegetables and lemon potatoes for a main dish whice was excelent. For appetizers we had the cyprus cheese which was prepared grilled!!! with eggplant(very tasty) and grilled octapus(soft as opposed to rubbery that you get in sushi places). For desert we shared some Greek pastries. Very tasty and very sugaree and I guess very fattening. I would get an extra appettized or Martini and skip the desert allltogether. Which leads me to the second question. Is it the location? Well may be. Asbury Park doesn’t sound inviting. But this place has a valet parking, so feel confortable and visit there. I rate it a PLUS.

My wife and I stopped in 2 weeks ago for some wine and calamari(not a bad late night snack). Much to our surprise, they were quite crowded with late night diners — and the belly dancer didn’t hurt my eyes at all! Winter is coming and I certainly hope that Synaxis makes the cut and survives through ’til spring. The economy will make it tough but many people are just looking for a comfortable place for a good meal or late night drink. Just one of the many restaurants in the Asbury Park stable.

Another restaurant joins the downtown Asbury Park, Cookman Street club, but this, at least for now, is worth a pass. For what the menu is priced at, the food is simply not 5 star quality. The presentations were not original and the same menu could be found at any Greek diner for a fraction of the cost. While the atmosphere was very nice, the overall food was a major disappointment. Fish wrapped in grape leaves was over cooked, shellfish appetizers were bland, the salad was fair and the soup was nothing special. Sorry, but right now there are too many other good choices in downtown Asbury Park. Maybe within a few months Synaxis will get its act together and do better. May try it again at some point in the future in case it was just a «bad night.»
