Food was really good although it was over one and a half hours before we saw any. Kinda strange due to the fact that the place had a lot of empty tables and we planned the reservation days in advance. The waitress/manager wasn’t very accommodating and came out with a few sly comments. We had a group of about 25 in which half were kids. We joined some of the tables together so we could all engage in conversation and when she came over her words were, «if I spill any dinner on you I am not responsible for the injury». We replied that we wouldn’t need her to work out of her comfort zone and we would help her pass the plates around. We did not get offered the dessert menu which i was really looking forward to but to be perfectly honest, i was dredding the wait if i ordered any. Don’t let it put you off though. At least try it once and make your own mind up. Food was real good !

Delicious German food in the south Asheville area. I recommend trying the platter with Jaeger Schnitzel, Sauerbrauten, a variety of Wursts, and sides. It gives you plenty of variety and plenty of food for 2 people to share. The German Potato Salad, Spatzel, and Red Cabbage are all highly recommended sides for a typical German meal.

Delicious food, great service, and beautiful décor! I highly recommend this German restaurant. We have been to Germany and their food is on track. We all got different entrees and they were excellent! I highly recommend there Sauerbraten and the German sampler! We’ll definitely be back!

We went here for lunch, but the dinner menu is better, plus you get more food for a higher price. The Jaeger Schnitzel was great with a mushroom bordelaise sauce. I had spaetzle and red cabbage as sides. The cabbage had been reheated one too many times. It was mushy and not fresh. Spaetzle was good and homemade, but not fresh tasting. This place is in serious need of renovation. The old carpeting was ruffled and rolled in most places and the building looks a bit dilapidated. The menu at the Hendersonville location is essentially the same as this one. The ownership is the same. Food is prepared at each location by the chef on duty, but bread is sent to the Hendersonville location by the Arden location. I do not know whether the spaetzle is made at the main location and sent to the Hendersonville location or not. From my limited experience at the restaurants, I would guess they each make their own as the spaetzle at Hendersonville was better. I really like the food overall, and thus, am giving this location a four star, also. I like the Hendersonville location better, but there is a shorter wait for food at the Arden location. Very limited selection of draft German beers which is surprising to me. There are four listed, but only three available. This makes no sense to me.

We used to live in Germany… so my husband and son were happy to see the reviews on TripAdvisor and see the menu here, looking forward to an authentic meal. They weren’t disappointed. Both enjoyed delicious schnitzel, with sides of red cabbage and spatzle, just as you’d expect, along with a great German beer! While I am not a big German food fan, I enjoyed a creamy, delicious Bolognese with a portion that was so huge my husband and I are enjoying a delicious lunch today!

Kitsch is the most appropriate word to describe this restaurant. An odd assortment of half German half Italian food in and of itself is odd enough add to it the pseudo hunting log attempt they have tried to accomplish and it’s pure kitsch. The drink: two martinis order both came out with things floating in them from what I can only think is dirty ice. The staff was very polite and helpful though. I ordered a house salad for starter followed by Wiener Schnitzel I got with a side order of Bratwurst. They informed me they had no cucumbers so that would not be a part of the salad, odd. The salad was such an odd concoction I can’t say it was good. The Wiener schnitzel was overlooked and dry, the sides looked shoveled out of a storage container. The saving grace to me being absolutely pissed off was the Bratwust which was fantastically cooked and tasty! Just like I would have gotten in Munich. Overall this is just not a good place, the bar is very very very loud in the dining room and hearing drunk people sing the sound of music off key is not my idea of entertainment, nor is just plan junky food. If you have blue hair, like crappy food in large quantity for not very cheap this is your place.

We come here every year while on vacation and it never disappoints. Our waitress Mckinzey is awesome! I ordered the jäger schnitzel dinner which comes with spatzel, German potato salad, red cabbage and sauerkraut, it’s absolutely delicious. We also ordered the Black Forest cake was so moist and just about the best cake I’ve ever had. By far from all the different cities and German restaurant this is the best German food I have ever had

I gave Black Forest an A-OK meaning it was okay and I will not rule out coming back. I loved the building atmosphere and architecture. You do feel like you are in an Alpine lodge. My husband and I stopped in around 7 on Friday night. The place was not very busy, but they did have 3 separate dining areas being sat. We sat in the first dining area near the entrance, and the room was probably only 1⁄3 full. We were sat at the booth immediately inside the entrance. I feel like with all of the open tables, I would have preferred to sit more inside the dining room. I had the feeling like I needed to hurry and leave because of where they sat us at the door. With the room being so empty it was very quiet, only a small murmur of conversation. I told my husband I wish they had music playing. Once a few tables cleared out we realized they did have music it was just so low you couldn’t hear it. It almost just sounded like someone’s cell phone. Our waitress was very friendly and knowledgeable. I was a little bummed when she told me they only had 2 options for German beer. I went with the lighter of the two. I could not tell you the name even if I wanted to. But I can say it was very light for a German beer. It almost tasted like a Budweiser. I’ve never had a German beer that light before. It wasn’t bad, but not what I would have expected or normally chosen. We started with the Potato pancake. It came out rolled up like a blitz with apple sauce and sour cream on the side. I have to say this is not something I’d order again. It was so greasy I could not taste anything but grease. For my meal I chose the Rahm Schnitzel with spatzel, cabbage, sauerkraut and potato salad. The Schnitzel was probably one of the most tender pieces of pork I have ever had. I’ve never had schnitzel that sliced with a butter knife with ease and melted in my mouth like this did. The mushroom rahm(gravy) on top balanced out the flavor, not too salty just right. The sides were average but good. They definitely complimented the pork. For dessert I tried the raspberry dark chocolate cake. It was okay, again not the best dessert but it was tasty. The prices are high, entrees between $ 17 – 24 from what I could see, but the portion sizes are huge. Even my husband had left overs which almost rarely happens. If you want to try this place out without the bill come during lunch. I think this could be a really great place to come if maybe they added some live music, like a live polka band or something to give it a little boost of energy, especially on a Friday night. Definitely give this place a try, the schnitzel made up for the negatives.

Black forest in the heart of Asheville. After touring the alps and hiking miles through the wild of Walmart my wife suggested we try the Black Forest Café. If you’ve wanted to lose yourself in Germany without traveling our beautiful state look no further. Not done be back soon…

Nice Restarant, with nice waiters. I am born and raised in Germany, so i am quite careful when it comes to German cuisine, especially when they advertise the«German Potato Salad», which in most cases is an insult of this fine product. Talking about it, i saw potato salad on the menu, and ordered a taste, and again, the product doesn’t even resemble the original. Hot mushy potatoes with a little vinegar in it, is not a GERMANPOTATOSALAD! I ordered a Sauerbraten with Spaetzle and red cabbage. And OMG… THATHITTHESPOT! It was almost as good as my mom used to make it. Great job. If it wouldn’t be for the salad, this Restaurant would get a five Star from me

We recently hosted a rehearsal dinner at the Black Forest Restaurant for a group of 50 people. I can’t say enough about the professional and supportive staff, especially Mackenzie, who worked with us on very short notice. She reassured me that they work with groups all of the time and they have it covered. She was absolutely right! I introduced last minute requests and she honored them without a blink. All of this was in the middle of the stress of opening their new restaurant in Hendersonville but she made us feel that we were the most important customers of the day. The food was absolutely delicious and authentic — having lived in Deutschland for 4 years — a reliable review. Many thanks to Mackenzie and her staff — they really made our evening special!

This was our second visit here and probably our last. The number of cars in the parking lot did not represent the number of people inside unless there was another occupied seating area that we were unaware of. We were one of five other occupied tables when we were seated and this was between 6 – 7 p.m. Our waiter was friendly and willing to answer any questions we may have had. Portion sizes were large and for the most part very tasty, however the overall cost of the meal is why we probably will not make a third visit. At one point towards the end of our meal, the dining area was completely empty of employees and we waited a longer time than expected to get our bill.

We had a group of about 20 for dinner on a Saturday night at the Black Forest. We were seated in a private rooms and given a choice of a half dozen dishes — a German sampler, a schnitzel plate, an Italian plate, seafood and a couple of others. Overall, the group dinner went well, with good, timely and friendly service. I personally would have preferred to order from a menu, given that we weren’t a large group, but it worked out okay. As it was, most of us weren’t told prices of the meals, and they varied a good deal, from about $ 15 to more than $ 25 plus tax, tip, drinks and dessert. I thought I was getting veal schnitzel but it was pork — but very good and a huge serving with four German sides. We(a couple) paid about $ 100 for a total of two cocktails(a Jack on the rocks for a reasonable $ 7.50, and an unusual old-fashioned($ 11.50), one beer, one glass of wine, two entrée plates and one dessert, including tax and pre-figured tip, perhaps on the pricey side for our group. I’ve only eaten here once or twice before, about 15 years ago, and it doesn’t seem as if the décor or main menu items have changed much in that time, except possibly there are more Italian and seafood dishes. The portions are still huge. The steps and entrance don’t seem to have been refurbished in years. The Black Forest does seem to attract a crowd of regulars, and there was a sign out front advertising for staff for a new location in Hendersonville. If you order with care from the regular menu, prices are pretty reasonable for the quantity of food. Service is good, and the atmosphere, while far from elegant, is fine for a mid-level restaurant. I’m not a German food fan, but I love good vienerschnitzel, so I might come back for that.

My BF and I went here randomly on a cold night and it was delicious. The atmosphere was warm and romantic. It felt like we were in a chalet in the mountains somewhere. :) The server lit a candle for us and answered all of questions with a smile. I got the pork Wiener Schnitzel with lemon and capers and he got the veal Schnitzel Berliner Style with a bordelaise sauce. It was all so delicious. The portions are huge, so we each had a great lunch for the next day. The only thing I would change is that our caesar salads were way too garlic-y for both of us and that’s saying a lot, because we like garlic. Other than that, it was excellent! We’ll definitely be back!

Authentic German food in the least likely of places(surprised me, anyway)! Handled large group w/aplomb, drinks kept fresh, and at my end of the table, the sausage, schnitzel, and black forest cake were amazing! Hope to be back at some point!

This review is in response to Christmas Day 2014. I have gone to Black Forest for Christmas dinner for three years straight. They make an event out of now, advertising that they’re open at this special time. Something happened this year that I don’t think should be let go. We arrived at 6 pm for our 6 pm reservation, and the whole lobby and most of the outdoor patio was filled with people who ALSO had a 6 pm reservation. They had overbooked. And I listened to the hostess tell the same story to everyone coming in: «It’s about an hour wait, even with a reservation. Our kitchen and wait staff is overwhelmed.» Here’s the thing… reservations are for the benefit of the restaurant as well as the diner. It’s to let them know what to plan for AND when to begin turning away diners that they can’t handle. Eventually everyone’s meal became an accelerated, truncated version of the regular experience. Most of the menu was sold out(by 6:30 pm to most accounts), drink menus were totally skipped due to the bar being overwhelmed, and there was no bread. I mean, really? The staff last night were acting like a great tragedy had befallen them and they were making due the best they could. They didn’t have a kitchen fire. The water main didn’t burst. Someone answered the phone and took every single one of those reservations, yet didn’t cut it off. Was it stupidity or intentional? Either way, you have to run a tighter ship than this.

Black Forest is the best German restaurant in town. The staff is very friendly and the food is wonderful. Each plate I’ve had is served with several traditional German sides like sauerkraut, red cabbage, German potato salad, and spaetzle and each of the sides were great. My husband and I have eaten here for date night, but also have been there with our 3 small children and the experience has always been a good one.
