Keep walking… I’m from the Big Island and have found the food mediocre plate lunch at best, today I was sitting at the food court in front of Shaka Shack, when my 6 year old daughter asked me why they had a «gnome with a big p#%*+!»? Sure enough, the video paying at the front on their big screen was playing exactly that, over and over, a gnome with a large erect«banana». I tried to speak with them about it and instead of an apology from who turned out to be the owner I was promptly dismissed and told the screen«doesn’t normally play that». It was on a DVDs menu that kept replaying.(Same video playing last time we were here) The owner needs to learn to take customers concerns seriously. I won’t be patronizing Shaka Shack and writing a formal complaint to the malls management. I wouldn’t be leaving a poor review if the owner would have acted more like an owner should and understood his customers come for food and don’t want to explain images like this to their young daughters. Here’s an idea… Buy a new surf video

I rarely venture to the top floor of the mall, because I’ve never been impressed with any of the venues there. I was ono for some kalua pig and cabbage, and I remembered this place. So, I ordered a mini KP& C only to be told that they were out of cabbage. Well, one cannot have KP& C without the C, so I got a Kal Bi mini instead. The meat was alright, but the macaroni salad was not. Apparently the proprietor of this establishment has no idea what true plate lunch mac salad is supposed to be like. The pasta is supposed to be overcooked, not undercooked. It was too chewy to be true to its Hawaii roots. I know a little about what I’m talking about. I’m part Hawaiian, and lived my first 18 years of life there.

Always happy to find short ribs, but I regretted making a point to come to the mall for them. The spooned-on sauce was just wrong and they had no flavor. No one who has ever lived in HI would approve of the Mac salad. 2 scoop rice was okay. That’s the nicest thing I could say about the food. The guys up front were cool.

$.99 spam masubi with a Unilocal checkin! I ordered the chicken teriyaki plate and for a restaurant inside of a mall, it was pretty good! They have lighter options that come with veggies and salad instead of rice, I like that!

Located in the mall, skate/surf theme in the food court. If you’re in Anchorage and loves Hawaiian food, this place is a must-try! Affordable prices, good service and yummy food. There were lots of choices to choose from – they even have spam and chicken musubi. The loco moco was good and it was cooked perfectly, even though I wanted the eggs scrambled. Overall, great food and service and prices were inexpensive.

ONO /NO KAOI… The Shaka Shack serves Hawaii soul food in the foodcourt at the Fifth Avenue Mall. The fare is similar to L&L Barbecue’s, a 50th-state plate-lunch institution. I usually have the mixed barbecue grill plate, which consists of beef teriyaki, short ribs, and barbecued chicken on a bed of shredded cabbage, two scoops rice, and one scoop creamy, delicious macaroni salad. Just writing about it makes me want save up my appetite and have dinner there tonight. They carry a full line of Hawaiian Sun canned juice drinks(e.g., guava nectar, lilikoi passion, luau punch). For lunch or if you aren’t that hungry, they have mini plates and bonsai bowls. The counter staff, a young couple and family, are always friendly and welcoming and the cooks always deliver solid meals. We lived in Hawaii for over 20 years(I met my wife there) and drive downtown regularly for this Hawaiian comfort food fix.

While it is a food court place, I really enjoy their Kalua pork plate. Sometimes I try other places in the court, and I always regret it. I will admit though, the portion has gotten smaller in the past year.

I lived in Hawaii for 23 years. Missed Hawaiian food. I have eaten here 3 times and have loved every bite. Will keep coming back.

Expensive for the quality. Small portions. For being a Hawaiian restaurant, where is the Hawaiian hospitality? Rip off. Just cooked meat with teriyaki sauce.

I’m giving it same rating as Hula Hands. This place has like reformed-street-thug energy with the half-cocked smiles & the gangsta rap in the kitchen. I felt cooler by ordering here ;) The guys running the place were nice. Got the Spam Loco Moco: Fried eggs on rice is my soul food, and rice was perfect & eggs were cooked just right. Their gravy is better than Hula Hands(like your Thanksgiving packaged brown gravy). Wish the Spam were browned for flavor. Mac salad heavy on the mayo & noodles slightly undercooked. Overall onolicious. 3 stars as it’s in the food court at 5th Ave Mall and it’s basic stuff. Maybe it’s a 4-star if you are craving loco food. It was a rainy day & hit the spot.

Holy gawd in heaven, the pulled pork plate is worth the price of air fare from Seattle. Thank you for awesome creamy delicious mac salad. Yes it is in the mall, I have no shame over that. Good food, fresh veggies, nice people

Happen to stop in while mall shopping. For mall food this was excellent! Had the Loco Moco; Kalua Pork Nacho; Spam Misubu. All hot and tasty. Bad side: charge for refills.

Atmosphere might not be the best, but when you’re by yourself, it’s a great place to stop and get a decent meal.

I enjoy Hawaiian food, and though I’ve never tried anything there like the Banzai bowl, we were happy with our order. It came with two chunks of halibut and some cooked veggies that was all mixed in with some teryaki sauce and on a bed of brown rice. Veggies were from one of those mixed frozen veggie bags you get at Sam’s Club or such, but they weren’t cooked to death. The fish was cooked perfectly, meaning it was still moist. As far as mall food court grub goes, this is respectable. And the service was great. The owner used to be in the surf scene and it was great talking to him.

The Shaka shack will soon be a historic landmark in Anchorage. It will be on the places to go here. I been to other hawaiian spots and nothing has compared to TSS. If you’re are looking for not only great food, but wonderful people, and excellent customer service. Stop by the Shaka Shack!!!
