While the service and interior environment of Carrs on Gambell are fine(if a little dated), I’m really astounded on how this store has survived for so long. I live in the Fairview neighborhood, and as a life-long Alaskan have seen how this place has deteriorated, keeping the neighborhood down with it. While I walk to this store from my home, I am harassed, asked to buy liquor, asked for money, or just plain yelled at by mentally-disturbed or drunk people. This happens every time and isn’t an exaggeration, no matter how much security this place has or how strict the Oaken Keg is managed. This isn’t normal, and somehow Fairview and the folks that shop here have become complacent with it. I will never shop here again. Especially alone. I’m really hoping that this location makes a change– because what it has right now is not sustainable for itself or its customers.

This might be one of the creepiest grocery stores I’ve been in. It’s got a kind of crazy setup where you enter behind the checkout lanes and there’s super, really long, narrow aisles. There’s less offerings than lower 48 grocery stores. There were only two checkout lanes open. Definitely an old store. Pretty weird vibe.

There is always parking in the front. The seafood section needs improvement. Talapia, A couple of salmon fillets, and pollock imitation crab. The only carrrs I believe with a security guard. Gail the checker opens your eggs and makes sure there are no broken or cracked eggs. The produce section is clean and well maintained. There is not really a Heath food section like the other Carrs but the layout and small size makes shopping the perimeter easier. The Oaken keg has a rule about the line being in the middle isle. There is no Carrs gas station at this location. The people watching at 13th and gamble is a riot.

I been inside once and it was beyond clean and organize. The area might be suspect but that has nothing to do with carrs

Ghetto Carrs! The People’s Pharmacy(in the parking lot)! I like this grocery store. They have the friendliest and most helpful staff of all the Carrs in Anchorage. For a small store(pretty sure it’s the smallest in town) they also have a pretty decent selection, including a limited amount of organic produce and dairy. I can’t find everything I need here, but pretty darn close. The store is kept clean and organized. However, they should close the Oaken Keg, it would be great for our neighborhood and the store too. Come on Carrs, give back to your community(we certainly give to you).

I am giving this Carrs Safeway 5 stars! The security is outstanding here. A bonus star for the APD sub-station attached to the rear of the building. I couldn’t feel any safer! This store is awesome for getting your weekly dose of racial and economic diversity! That’s a tip for my lighter skinned friends :-)

This is the closest grocery store to my house so sometimes I run up here out of necessity. I usually try to avoid this Carrs if possible. It’s next door to some sort of shelter and I am often accosted by people asking for money. This Carrs also has limited amounts of fresh produce and the selection isn’t as good.

Yup, everyone refers to this place as crack Carrs, which I guess is shorter than watch-your-back-front-side-and-belongings Carrs. It’s not so bad, but it does get a bad rap because of the number of vagrants hanging around the entrances. Scary in the dark, less inviting in the light, so be aware of your surroundings and you’ll be okay. All inall, it’s like any other Carrs with exceptions of the alcohol containing mouthwash being under lock and key, and the doormen having less than sparkling/hygienic appearances.

This Carrs has a rep and for good reason. I always find myself double-checking the locks on my car, and holding my keys in the«I’ll Wolverine stab you» stance. It’s just natural to be on your defensive here. It’s not that people are particularly violent here, it’s just that it gives off a very uncomfortable vibe with the amount of loiterers and bad feelings the place gives off. The layout of the store is probably to dissuade shoplifting, but it’s very awkward and cramped. The bakery and hot deli are on the other end of the store, past the checkout stands. Some aisles are narrow and you have to dance around to dodge the big displays they shove in the middle. The produce section is laughably bad, with oft half-barren stands and lettuces and carrots that are overly-sprayed so as it give an impression of looking fresh and crisp. Yuck! This is like, the store you go to when it’s 11:45 at night and Freddy’s is closed and you really need some milk or something, but by no means try to make this your regular store. It’s in a skeezy location, with questionable folk, and it’s just. blech! Oh, and I forgot to add earlier. They are always clearancing dairy. I don’t get it. Maybe people in that area hate milk and yogurt, but the last couple of times I’ve been in there, so many jugs and cups were discount stickered. WTH?

Fer reals, this place is seriously ghetto. Clientele are super scary, employees are kinda scary too. Pretty big store for being«inner city», fairly decent selection. Shop at your own risk.

«Ghetto Carrs» or «Crack Carrs.» The name says it all. I live close by, so this is where I go most of the time for my shopping, but I really try to avoid it. I have seen many, many people arrested here, have witnessed domestic violence, etc. The cashier had a cold one time and coughed all over my produce. Hard to walk to or from your car without being asked for money. Great business, except for the employees, and the customers.

As Penny has nicely put it, this is very much the ghetto Carrs. If I really need an item and I’m driving a couple blocks away, I would go here to pick it up. If it were broad, sunny daylight. There are **lots** of loiterers and a police station is a block away from the store. As a single woman I wouldn’t consider coming here after twilight and especially at night. There’s no immenent danger of bodily harm, but being whistled at and getting the stare-down doesn’t exactly make you want to do cartwheels either.
