A wonderful family owned independent movie theater showing all those movies the big box theaters might not show. This historic theater is located right by the Drake Campus and has been showing independent and local movies for over 50 years. They are fantastic curators and bring in an amazing selection of films. This is my favorite spot in town to go see the new Woody Allen movies every time one comes out. You cant beat the matinée prices of 5 bucks a film and there concessions are the cheapest I have ever seen in theaters. You can get a huge tub of popcorn and a large pop for 5 bucks! It’s amazing! It’s nice to go to a locally owned theater where the owners care about the movie going experience and love movies as much as I do! Tips: 1. They do not take credit cards, so bring cash. One time I saw them let a lady in to the movie for free though saying he trusted her to send a check to them later since she had no cash or check with her and the film was about to start! 2. Show up on time cause sometimes they don’t even bother showing previews to other movies.

This theater is right across the street from campus… and it always brings great popular or breaking independent films. They also have fun theme’d nights to just mix it up. I know if i want to catch a great film i haven’t quite heard much about I’d trust the Varsity to bring some thought provoking films. Its old but that’s the charm of going somewhere with history…
