On this cold & icy day, I needed a big bowl of chicken phở. Thankfully, this place had just that. I’m from out of town so I was counting on my boyfriend to find a decent place. It’s definitely a hole in the wall atmosphere but don’t let this stop you. I started off with the egg rolls and shortly after my phở arrived. My boyfriend had the Thai tea that was made to perfection! They don’t have fountain drinks, the waitress brought me a diet coke in a can alongside with a cup of ice so don’t expect free refills.

The last time I went here was over a year ago, and I thought the food was pretty good. Thus, I was excited to go back. There were a lot of items on the menu that sounded interesting, so I was curious to what they were. However, when I asked the waitress about the items, she had absolutely no idea what were in them. It’s okay if it happens once, but it happened twice. In the end, I settled with a small serving of chicken fried rice. Everyone in my party got their food very quickly, but 5 minutes passed by… then 10… and the next thing I know, everyone has gotten their food except me. Well, after letting the waitress know, my fried rice was cooked in less than 5 minutes, but it wasn’t even that good. The portion was very, very large however. Usually after such an incidence happens, the restaurant would be kind enough to compensate their mistake with a reduced check or free appetizer/dessert. Nope, nothing. Finally, keep in mind this place is cash only. Maybe this experience skewed my opinion of this restaurant a bit since I have had good experiences prior to this. In conclusion, large portions, mediocre/unknowledgeable service, and cash only.

I had the combination phở and my buddy had the cashew chicken. The phở was good, the meatballs were tasty but I think it could have used more steak and tripe. I tried a few bites of the cashew chicken as well. I found the sauce to be a bit salty but the fried rice was good! Next time I’ll try the Pad Thai. BTW, there was a sign on the door that said they have applied for a liquor license.

The item I enjoyed the most was their beef jerky and sticky rice. I’ve since tried this menu item at other places and I just prefer the way the jerky is prepared here over the others. I ordered the phở and my husband had(of course) fried rice. Good food and looking to go back again soon.

Everytime I come here, I find something else to Unilocal about. The food continues to get better and better. The fried rice, which was once very dry and bland, is now very moist and flavorful. I asked the manager about this and she said, «Oh, our main chef has been on a vacation. He just returned. That’s why.» lol Well, WELCOMEBACKCHEF! With more frequent visits, you’ll start to learn more about the menu and what to order and what to avoid. Panang curry is delicious and spicy. Regular chicken curry is also good, but there was bamboo in it — ew. Don’t get the cheapy Chinese dishes such as sweet and sour chicken. It’s awful. Phở is decent, but far from the best. Pad Ci-u and Pad Thai continue to be this restaurant’s top dishes. Stick with the Thai stuff and it will be hard to go wrong. Still short a star because of location(it’s so far away!) and the fact that they still only take cash.
