La Carreta Mexican Restaurant

The server didn’t write down our orders at all for the 4 of us. I had asked for no rice and beans, a steamed chicken taco and a carnitas Sope. My plate cane with rice and beans, a hard shell taco with ground beef not chicken and the Sope did not have pork. I did complain about the Taco but we were with friends that like the place so I didn’t complain about anything else to the server. Food was average. Didn’t eat a lot. Would not go back! Why wouldn’t the server right down the orders? It was proven that he definitely can’t remember them correctly!

Stopped on our way home from Julian and so glad we did. Food was great and service amazing! Recommend the carnitas torta.

Like everyone has said, this restaurant is staffed by disrespectful and rude people. Each time we have tried to eat there, we are «greeted» and then promptly ignored for thirty minutes. Not even given a table when there are several vacant. When we were finally seated tonight, we waited another ten minutes for water and chips, and after waiting for the beers we ordered, were told they were all out. So we asked if we could just order food because at that point we had invested an hour with a tired kid after his school pageant. «Um I’m not your waiter.» Eff you. We walked out. This is the last shot we gave them. Unfortunate because the food really is good.

The only reason I am giving 2 stars is because the food was so good.
The service was horrible! We had a large group of 10 people. We called several hours ahead and made reservations, which was not a problem we were seated quickly and they were quick to take our order. But our waiter took our order and we didn’t see him again. The other staff was nice but they were busy with their own tables and customers to take care of.
We had to ask for our check 7 times and waited 90 minutes to pay our bill. One of the waitresses said she had told our server several times that we need our checks as well and he still hadn’t come. When he finally came we complained to him that we have been waiting 90 min to pay and we were ready to leave and he said he has been waiting that long too. Which doesn’t make any sense. He finally came and verified what we all had to eat and drink and then when we finally got our bills he didn’t give a bill to one person who had 3 drinks and an entrée, missed my entrée and 1 drink on my bill and missed 3 drinks on another person’s bill. I have never had to beg and ask over and over to pay for our food. I will never go again and will not recommend them to anyone. Which is really sad because the food was really good, I don’t remember the servers name but it was a man, he had dark hair that was a little linger and dark facial hair and I guess he was the bartender that night as well.

The food, was great. It took forever but was great.
We called 5 hours brute and made a reservation for 10. Wasn’t an issue at all. Got there got seated. Turns out our service staff was also the bar tender. He took our orders and that was it. He never came back. Not once.
The other staff was nice and helped us, but our waiter was never to be seen. We had to ask 7 times over 90 minutes for checks.
One of the wait staff said she’s told him 4 times. And if he doesn’t come in 10 minutes go ahead and leave. He finally came around. I told him we’ve been waiting 90’minutes… His response, I know so have I. Really???
Then he comes around to try to figure out who ordered what.
He ended up not giving one person a check. Missing 4 drinks on another person’s check. Missing an entrée and a margarita on my check cause he couldn’t remember who ordered what. He shall didn’t get a tip.
Bottom line we had to waste 90 minutes and beg for a check. Which is crazy. And were told by staff to leave if we don’t get our check in 10 minutes. That is 100% absurd. I will never go back to this place our recommend it.

2 of us went to the restaurant and there were only two other customers at tables so it was not busy. We were given menus but waited a long time for a staff member to come back to our table. Not very friendly service. The soup was excellent and my friend liked her dinner. Male waiter not friendly or welcoming.

So decide to give them a second chance. This time they redeemed themselves from my last visit. Had a delicious taco salad and our waiter Junior and our waitress Nidia were amazing.

First off, they did not have HORCHATA… Being raised in the EAST LA environment, that was a HUGE Minus! The Food looked Better than the taste. Salsa out of a Can «Tomato Paste». Chips were okay, food had no taste or Abuelita Love like i Know and grew up with. Beans out of a can and Rice was UNCLE BENS MEXICAN RICE. Wife also grew up in my area and we both could not finish our meals… Didnt feel too well while eating so paid and left… I STRONGLY DO NOT recommend this Place…

The chips and salsa were mediocre. The salsa tasted like tomato sauce; no real spice or flavor. The quesadilla was a disappointment. I thought you couldn’t go wrong with a tortilla and cheese, but I stand corrected.

My family and I walked in and stood there while two staff members waited on tables but ignored the fact that we were there. waiting to see if they would seat us or were we suppose to seat ourselves. Finally I told my Husband lets just go sit. So we did and then were promptly served chips and salsa. I ordered the chicken enchiladas and my husband ordered a beef taco, and a chicken enchilada. It came with rice and beans. The chicken had no flavor, I had to add salsa from the chips and salsa to finish it. My husband didn’t like the chicken either. The rice and beans were kind of flavorless too. Don’t think we will be back. Only one waitress working the whole place. Two men were sort of helping, but one had to be at the bar a lot.

Family owned and operated for the last 178 years. Maybe I’m embellishing a bit, but this place gives you the feeling that you’re at someone’s home and the food is tremendously well prepared. I can’t even think of another Mexican food restaurant within 25 miles that can compete with this gem of Alpine.

Always have a great meal whenever i go. Food and service are the best. Very warm and inviting. Makes you feel like you are family. Our server knows our order by heart and makes the best michalada (?) in town.

The food is awesome ! Servers are great and full bar is on point !! Great prices we eat here at least once a week ! Salsa is amazing

We kept on smelling delicious steak every time we passed La Carreta, so one day we finally decided to give it a try. And damn, why didn’t we come here sooner?!
Service is prompt (and not pestering, unlike their neighbor Mediterraneo), food is delicious, portions are large and prices are reasonable. The menu is so huge you’ll probably have a hard time deciding what to get, so just pick something and keep coming back until you check everything off the list! Everything seems to be made fresh to order, including homemade salsa and chips to start you off.
When my parents came to visit, we took them to La Carreta, where they ate their meals like starving killer whales! (They don’t normally eat like that.)
My husband and I love their carne asada salad with bleu cheese dressing. It’s basically the world’s most delicious steak salad, with perfectly cooked steak for just $ 10. Holy guacamole! (You can get some of that on the side, too.)
Make sure you check their hours before you go, as they close a little on the early side. Last time we were there, a carload rolled up at 7:45 asking if it was delicious, so we told them hell yeah but they better hustle, since the posted hours were open ’til 8.

I agree with other reviewers: staff is inattentive. The enchilada was loaded with American cheese and swam in some red sauce topped off with yet more yellow American cheese. Their albondiga soup was good but served in a miniature bowl for an extra $ 3. Better food at Diego’s by the gas station off I-​8.

What a joke of a place. I walked into the restaurant and was told to take any seat. A girl served chips and some very bad salsa. After that nobody stopped at our table, at all. There were many times that a server walked past but they did nothing to help us. So I walked out. Why waste my time if they are not willing to take an order.

I’m continuously amazed by the sheer number of mexican restaurants in Alpine. Seriously there are over eight of them for a town of 20,000 people. I stopped in for dinner and was lucky to find a seat at the bar in the back. Every table was full and the bar was packed. Right off the bat I’m thinking this must be some extraordinary place. I finally got seated was met with a non stop parade of chips and salsa followed by more waiting… After being at this location for almost 1hr I finally received my dinner.
What a let down the cheese enchiladas were just ok and my chile relleno was simply bland, not much flavor but alot of red sauce slopped haphazardly on top and across the plate. I was expecting so much more but in the end I received a meal that did not stand out or wow me in any way shape or form. Alas my search for the best mexican restaurant in Alpine continues.

Chef Leo can cook the DANKEST chicken guacamole taco! I was very pleased with my meal :)

We were here last month while staying in the area. The food was outstanding!
It’s a family owned, nice little place with a bar area and full bar service.
The serving portions were huge… We had to have take home boxes.
Friendly staff, clean place, nicely decorated. It has all the good stuff!
