If this is Al’s Other Half, I’d call it his Better Half. While Al had a great little hole in the wall on Route 66, his spouse put together something even more unique here, and it’s right next to the best ‘brary in Burque. The food in this lil’ sunlit corner of the downtown planet takes the deli thang to another level. Really inspired stuff here, with a bevy of carnivorous and meat-free options to satisfy any palette. The employees are fantastic, the entire experience delivers. And while I’m something of a novice here(two visits), the big standout has been the soup. Delightful, nuanced and smart, get a cup for a perfect lunch cuddle buddy. For the urban, digital forager, this is a terrific spot to break out the ol’ laptop or tablet and get somethin’ done, at least for the moment. With any luck word will spread and it’ll be packed everyday. Until then, I’m happy to hole up here when I’m downtown and spend some time working away. The patrons are a true reflection of Albuquerque’s current economic(non)well-being, so be prepared to witness simple humanity, as well. This building, and the minor plaza and bus shelter near the front doors, welcomes and embraces everybody: homeless, parents, professionals, what have you. Thus, Al’s is open and friendly to the lot, and it makes for a pretty cool scene. Next to you, a trio of suits may discuss an upcoming trial; opposite may sit a man in a worn wool coat, speaking to the voices in his head. It’s all good at Al’s, and I commend management for the humanitarian approach to some of the best lunch bites in our bubbly little town.

I’m was thrilled when I learned that Al’s Big Dipper(located on Central; see ) was taking over the café at the Downtown Public Library. They finally opened, and like Al’s, they are worth the visit. Repeat visitors will appreciate the remodel — the kitchen is no longer open, the tables and chairs look great, and the simple decoration compliments the sunny and open feel. Like Al’s, the the food is great. Unlike much of the New Mexico food options, I would describe Al’s as simple, clean, and springy(as opposed to thick, rich, and piled up). Al’s Other Half offers a new menu which includes a selection of breakfast items and espresso based coffee to compliment their sandwiches. I’ve had 4 meals so far and like them all, and am looking forward to their baked goods(I has a nice peek this morning at cinnamon rolls). I especially like that the food is very reasonably priced while still a high quality treat(unlike, ahem, Flying Star, which seems to raise the prices every few months). The staff, it should go without saying, is really friendly and gets to know their regular customers. I would not be surprised if I end up getting tasty beverages with them this summer. I’ve been writing in the café for a week solid and will probably visit regularly throughout the summer(I envision this becoming a mid afternoon break on my bike route). If you are in the downtown area, or just looking for a new place, this café is worth the visit. Support this local crew. I give this shop a five star rating and would give them a 6th for enhancing the downtown area. post script — the library opens at 10:00 at least twice a week, but Al’s Other Half opens at 8:00am, so use the side entrance.
