One star for each of the following syllables: Deep. Fried. Sandwich. Fourteen bucks might seem like a lot of money for a sandwich. But that’s a number that needs to be placed into context. The Monte Cristo sandwich suffers from a terrible fate. In its true form, it’s a glorious thing indeed. But almost everybody gets it wrong. As a result, most people think that this is a savory sandwich of ham, turkey, and swiss, tucked inside two limp, greasy pieces of french toast. But my first experience with a true Monte Cristo happened at The Blue Bayou in Disneyland where the entire sandwich is dipped in a thick egg batter and deep fried. That mind blowing dish cost a whopping twenty five dollars. Our local version really reflects a significant savings. And it’s just as awe inspiring. That batter crisps up into a gorgeous brown shell, which makes the fat and caloric hit of deep frying totally pay off. The savory interior is contrasted with the lightest touch of powdered sugar and a restrained raspberry drizzle, which keeps this lunchtime treat from turning into a sticky sweet confection. You know, there may be other things on the menu at Public House 42. But I only have eyes for this beauty.

I’ve been here a few times and have had mixed experiences. The restaurant is two levels. You can sit at the bar downstairs or at a table in the dining room upstairs. I prefer to sit downstairs because it has a more lively atmosphere and better service. During the week there are happy hour specials($ 1 off draft beers plus a few others that I can’t remember) and sometimes they have live music. I’ve had a few of the burgers and the steak salad. The burgers are all pretty solid. The tots are salty, so I’d go with the chips as your side. Once the steak salad was perfection and another time it was swimming in dressing and three pieces of the steak were fat. The service seems to vary widely(2 – 5 star) depending on the time you go and who is working. Also, this might just be me but the entire place smells like mothballs.

Unfortunately, this review has dropped a star as Public House 42 didn’t stand the test of time. The service was lackluster, which was not the fault of the waitress. She was trying her best. The menu was incorrect, which the chef addressed. The food was very good. So the staff is going out of their way to fix the faults of the management, in my book. Also, the draft beer I drank tasted kind of gross, like it had turned. Service and presentation count, and Public House is dropping the ball. I left there feeling like I didn’t want to spend money there again, which is too bad.

Stopped in for a pint. Bartender was very friendly and attentive. Menu looked good although I didn’t eat. I will be back despite a couple of minor things… I’m surprised at how disappointed I was that blues music was playing instead of Irish music. I guess it was what I expected and to hear something else was really weird. You guys need to stick to the theme. Details matter. They also need to fix the door. It doesn’t close behind patrons and the poor bartender had to holler at everyone to shut it behind them.

My wife & I stopped in for Happy Hour, good drink prices, food so-so, service was attentive. Our wings were small & overcooked, our mains were just ok nothing to rave about. There were only 6 people at the bar for Happy Hour my wife & I wondered why… ok food? Service was ok, but our bill for 2 including tip was $ 66& change… OUCH! Now I know why only 6 people at the bar during Happy Hour. Going to wait a while B4 returning.

Pretty much a fail. Corned beef was tough. Prob because it was cut along not against the grain. Amateur mistake. Sauces tasted store bought & not homemade. The biggest fail was the fries. They spend all the time to peel & hand cut the potatoes then don’t cook them properly so they arrive limp & soggy. Some advice… Blanch in low temp oil 300 degrees first. Then before serving fry in hot oil to crisp up. Also silverware was dirty & server was overwhelmed on a Saturday night. Wings were not bad. They have a lot of kinks to work out. Won’t be back.

Went downstairs to the bar area. It’s an Irish pub so the selections were what you’d expect from a respectable place that cares about quality. I had a Southern Tier IPA and checked out the menu which seemed to be created with passion for cooking and a creativity that would scream to you, «Hey!!! You came to the right place tonight, my friend!!» I ordered the Irish Egg Rolls which were fried goodness with 3 separate fillings: Guinness Mac n Cheese, Corned Beef & Cabbage, and Beef Stew. Each with a homemade dipping sauce. Hot, fresh, and delicious! I had the Irish BLT afterwards which had a horseradish mayo and the most crisp, «farm to table» bacon. The freshness of the tomato & lettuce were impressive as was the Bread. I can’t remember the name of the bread but it tasted like it just came out of the oven for the first time. Happy hour runs until 7pm so this meal was $ 22. I left $ 30 and thanked the bar keep who was gracious, knowledgable of the local culture, and appreciative that I stopped by on a Tuesday evening. The staff at this establishment care a great deal and I’m hopeful that they continue to impress.

Surprisingly a great place to grab a quick breakfast. Opens early, 7am I believe. Breakfast sandwiches are on point and add a coffee for $ 5. Haven’t been here for any other meal but the menu looks promising. Parking seems like the only issue with this place. The bar has a really cool homey pub vibe. Definitely worth checking out.

Although it is called PUBLICHOUSE42 the food, atmosphere, and most important the alcohol were amazing down to the last sip. I had the Mac n cheese topped with bacon and a signature whiskey drink. The food comes in huge portions! I thought I was going to pass out if I ate it all. My boyfriend got the beer cheese tater tots that were amazing as well. During our meal, the manager came over to make sure everything was good and was super attentive and friendly. Were thinking of going back again next weekend!
