I’ve been scanning the inventory every two weeks for years. I have not visited the bookstores in Eugene but between Eugene and Portland I consider this the best bookstore for used titles, by far, and with the fairest prices. I prefer this location to the one in Corvallis as the stock is more startlingly original but at the same time of interest. In a mill town it is mystifying where these books come from. The selection is strong in biographies, classic and modern lit, oldies, travel, technical and foreign languages, where I hang out. Other reviewers can speak for other genres. The manager, Trish, has never been unpleasant to me, and she knows the stock so well she can notice when a book has been mispriced to my disadvantage, and correct it without my prompting. Carol is nice too. I find Scott, the owner, a bit brusque. There is an unpleasant casual female employee. It is most definitely a store for the able-bodied bibliophile who enjoys clutter and eccentricity and is not excessively fastidious. The layout is on multiple levels, the floor covered with books — completely unsuitable for the handicapped. From about 18″ down to floor level it’s mighty hard to see what’s there. I rather wish they’d swamp it out and put in more shelving but I must admit the old office machines, two bookbinders’ presses, etc. add tone to the atmosphere. Although the bathroom says«employees only» I use it. The greatest failing is the pile of newly purchased books on two sides of the checkout counter. They cannot be browsed without getting in the way of other customers.

Browsers’ Bookstore in Albany is the former Albany Book Company, located in the old Shakey’s Pizza(Shakey’s #3!)/Izzy’s Pizza building. A fantastic independent store! A bit cluttered, with stacks of books that have no shelf space for them, and a ton of books at the counter as they’re always buying books or taking them in on trade, but more books is always a good thing. The staff likes to stage books with interesting covers in provocative locations, and I’ve bought more than a few books due to this awesome method of advertising. Browser’s has a great Sci-Fi/Fantasy section, a fair amount of RPG stuff, and a lot more. They typically have a «Free» box outside containing older books that haven’t moved for a while or those that are slightly damaged — sometimes the pickings are slim, sometimes you find some great treasures. Very fair and reasonable pricing.

The best used bookstore in Albany. The store that once was Albany Book Co. has been bought by Browsers. They’ve cleaned it up, organized it a little better, but left the feel of the store the same. Has almost everything you’re looking for. Large Sci-fi/Fantasy section, large romance and mystery section, large YA section. They will also help you get books for a book club, whether by ordering them in a group and giving you a discount, or if you give them enough time setting aside the books as they come in. You can also search their books online. Which is helpful if you want a specific volume. But the real joy of Browsers is to go and browse around until you find a treasure.
