Save a Snowman is a nonprofit that aims to get people, especially kids, involved in stopping global warming. Much like adopt-a-kid and adopt-an-animal programs that most of us are familiar with, Save a Snowman encourages donors to choose from a gallery which snowman(or snowwoman) to save. Each snowperson has his or her own name, story, and hometown. The idea is cute, and I adopted a couple of snowmen(actually a snowman and –woman) for some friends. The adoptive parents receive postcards that picture the adoptees. The website is a little bit vague on exactly where the money goes, but the organization was started by one person, and I think she’s still figuring things out. I actually met her at the San Francisco Green Festival in 2007. She seemed committed to her cause, and she did give me a lot of interesting information in person. Another thing I like about the website is that the stuffed animals – er, snowmen – you can buy are made from organic material. I don’t know what the labor conditions under which they are made are, but it’s always a step in the right direction when an environmental organization actually thinks about details like this. I might bump the rating up later, but the vagueness of the website is a big deal for me.
