J&J Books and Coffee

Blink and you’ll miss it… But if you love second-​hand books and a relaxed pub atmosphere with its charming mustiness and warm welcome, you must pay this tiny place a visit! We left with American English Irish Australian and other accents ringing in our ears and a bagful of books for the entire family to while away the siesta hours… much recommended!

My roommate and I have made two trips to J & J’s and both times we had severely awkward encounters. The first time, my roommate’s café con leche was all foam and no coffee or milk. The general ambience is pretty cool and they have a nice selection of English books, but the guests were obnoxiously loud (I guess that much is true about Americans). Upon our second visit, we were very awkwardly and rudely reprimanded by the barista for not each ordering a coffee — my roommate got a café con leche and I asked for a water, but the waiter insisted we were being extremely rude in not ordering more. He kept pestering us, saying «You wouldn’t go to Starbucks and just order a coffee and read the books!» Well, sir, yes, actually I would just order a coffee and Starbucks doesn’t have books, so yeah… after that uncomfortable experience, I will not be returning. I hope the guy just had a bad day or something and was taking it out on us, but to avoid further uncomfortable situations, I just don’t think it’s worth the trip.

Stopped in for an early meeting and really enjoyed J&J. We sat upstairs, place was pretty empty as it had just opened but the quiet ambiance was perfect. Ordered the tea of the week, chai, which was made perfectly. Seemed to be lots of books for exchange and I loved the old random furniture. Free wifi is an amazing plus. Just across from the Noviciado metro. Will definitely be back.

Barcelona and Madrid are rival cities. I don’t really see it as I am not a Spaniard nor a Catalan and they are completely different places. J & J Books is one thing that Madrid has that just beats the bee-​jeezes out of Barcelona, though. I wish we had one here.
Whenever I travel back to the States or the UK, I always ask if anyone wants me to pick up a book for them because English language books here are in short supply and come at a premium. (There is one second-​hand book store, Hiberian, and I’ll be giving that a less than stellar review in the near future.)
J&J’s is much more than a book shop with a decent selection and good prices, it’s a destinations (especially for locals) in of itself.
I love Spain and am enjoying adjusting to the culture (mostly), but, damn it, sometimes I just want to have some tea and a conversation in English with someone who’s not a backpacker. Bryn, customer turned employee, put it the best when he said he was glad to find a place to be with other ex-​pats that wasn’t an Irish pub. (Okay, so I had some booze and chatted with a lot of the patrons about Barça and the Rugby World Cup, but it’s hard to truly escape that and I don’t want to either.)
We went there twice and it was pretty busy both times. Both times we received super quick service and were welcomed as regulars. It had the same feeling as the arty, intellectual, but we-really-don’t-take-life-seriously bars I used to haunt in college. For me it was comfort food in the shape of a bar/​café/​bookstore.

Books, oh books, how I love you so!
Especially J & J Books, whom was my savior in Madrid, where it is extremely difficult to find any books in English. Excellent selection of used English books ranging from travel guides, mystery novels, mushy romance, history, and English teaching guides, to even a small selection of new releases. Their whole basement is dedicated to books!
The intercambio nights Wednesday and Thursday from 8-​close is a great way to make friends and meet locals, especially after downing a couple glasses of yummy Sangria. Oh, yeah! Did I mention there is a bar at this humble café!
Every Friday at 11 PM is quiz night and is ridiculous fun! Make sure you get there early because J & J’s is a small joint and typically packed to the brim by that point.
J & J Books and their staff rocks! When I am back in Madrid, you will be sure to find me posted here like a barfly!

J&J Coffee shop and books es un sitio que me gusta mucho.
Tiene una gran noche, la de los jueves, en la que se hace intercambio de idiomas, aunque el público suele buscar el intercambio inglés — español.
Hace un tiempo eran unos jueves fantásticos, las cañas son un poco caras, pero merece la pena siempre hay británicos y americanos dispuestos a mantener una charla en inglés.
Creo que hay dos tipos de público en este bar, el americano que busca un sitio en el que charlar con sus colegas y donde encontrar amigos americanos en Madrid, así que puedes conocer a muchos recién llegados. Por otro lado, están los españoles siempre dispuestos a practicar inglés.
Tiene el inconveniente de que cada vez se conoce más, y algunos jueves, hay tanto español, que es complicado encontrar una buena conversación en inglés. No obstante, es uno de los pocos bares que se pueden encontrar en Madrid, en los que la gente se abre y se molesta en conocer a la gente, sus orígenes, etc. Aunque vayas en una de esas noches en las que impera el spanglish.
La planta de abajo es fantástica, hay muchos libros asequibles en inglés de segunda mano, de todos los tipos, novela, libro de texto, etc.
He oído muchas quejas de este bar por su dueño, es muy distante y nada wellcoming, pero si pasas de él, te puedes encontrar grandes sorpresas. Si aprender inglés es una de tus aficiones apúntate este bar.
Otro plan interesante es buscar un libro y tomar un café, a veces, surgen conversaciones en la barra a lo espontáneo.
Espero que siempre esté ahí, es un bar que yo recomiendo mucho.

Viaja a Londres sin tener que llevar equipaje… Entras y, directamente, te saludan en inglés. Los libros son ingleses, los periódicos, también, el ambiente, todo, todo. Y el concepto, por supuesto. No sé si definirlo como librería con cafetería o al revés. El caso es que tienen más de 25.000 títulos en inglés, nuevos y de segunda mano, y puedes ir con los libros que tengas en la lengua de Shakespeare que ya no uses y venderlos. Los miércoles y los jueves tienen la noche de intercambio, en la que puedes ir a mejorar tu inglés, si eres español (o turcochipriota o mongol), o a perfeccionar tu español (si eres británico o estadounidense o tú ya sabes). Los viernes se juega al Trivial… y si a ti todo esto te da igual y lo único que te importa es el bebercio, tres días a la semana tienes happy hour.
Por cierto, se agradece el servicio wi-​fi.

Cuando lo descubrí (y mira que me costó porque puedes pasar por su puerta cien veces y no darte cuenta de su existencia), pensé: «genial, un sitio en el que hablar en inglés» porque su dueño, americano, al principio sólo hablaba en este idioma (eso lo ha ido relajando un poco… y no me gusta).
El sitio, en un principio, no sorprende para bien. Parece antiguo y el bar podría ser el de cualquier barrio. Sin embargo, esconde sorpresas.
El sótano, mi lugar favorito: estanterías repletísimas de libros en inglés de segunda mano, cuyo precio, entre los 2 y los 6 euros (lo normal es 4.50) es inmejorable. Yo cada vez que voy cargo con unos 4 ó 5, para que me duren al menos dos semanas. Algunos los cojo incluso de la zona de a un euro, ¡y son igual de buenos!
Además, el bar, aunque cutre, también tiene su miga. Yo no he estado, porque soy poco nocturna, pero por lo visto tienen monólogos, noche de trivial, etc. ¡Todo para mejorar/​aprender inglés y conocer gente!
