Sooo I don’t really get the fuss about this place. Yea, I guess it’s kinda cool that you just go to the counter and sit down and they just bring you out tapas that they think you’ll like. The food wasn’t bad by any stretch of the imagination… it was just way too expensive for food that you are literally eating on a bar stool. We paid almost 100 euros for a essentially 5 tapas and a bottle of cheap cava, when in most other places that meal would have been 50 euros at the most. Tuna tartare: 3⁄5. it was fine, nothing special Mini clams: 4/5, good flavor, but just tiny little nibbles Regular clams: 2⁄5 bland flavor Fried seafood: 5⁄5 this was the best thing they day. The various fishes and calamari were fried to perfection. Deep fried Artichokes: 4⁄5 the texture was good, but it was just way too salty. Also, I guess this was technically our mistake, but the waiter was about to put away a bottle of wine and asked my friend if she wanted a taste. We thought he was just being nice, but then he ended up charging us 4 euros for a measly glass of rather terrible wine.

Excellent recommendation by a friend’s friend. The chef picks out what you may like, based on the number of people in the party, and what you do/don’t like, so the people beside us ate a different meal from us. We had food envy looking at their plates, but we had a deliciously, mouth-watering dinner, so we can’t complain. Décor is traditional local dining with high bar stools. Convivial, fun atmosphere where diners and chefs/staff all talk and joke around with each other. Food standouts are: Amazing clams — we needed bread(without the tomato) to soak up the clam juice and sauce so we could savor every ounce of taste of it. Tortilla español — my friend has eaten many tortilla espanols in many countries, and this one is best in her book also because of the alioli. Must get the alioli. Steak and patatas — seriously amazing fried potatoes. I want their secret recipe. Just the right amount of salt, crispiness, tenderness, and overall umami. Yes, you will wait in line inside for an hour, teased by the smells of all the food. Just get a beer or cava while waiting. It’ll be worth the wait.

Saw a line and thought, «Wow this place must be good». It seemed like a lot of locals go there. The food was good. We did a «chefs pick» of 3 tapas. Everyone gets bread(which they charge you for, so it’s really 4 tapas). We ended up with Spanish omelette, fried squid, and beef tartar. I think what bothered me is sometimes you would see waiters/staff sneeze into their hands and then touch your food. This bothered me. So 4 tapas, 2 glasses of wine, 1 cava, 1 water and the total came out to be about 77 €. To me that’s expensive. If you’re going to go; go early so you can be seated first. Service is pretty quick and at the counter. Just too pricey, would not go again.

Don’t believe the hype. I’m from San Francisco, so I’ve been trained well in the art of standing in line for food. I’ve also been trained to expect food that justifies the wait. We went in with all the special ordering tips and still felt a bit bamboozled. The fried seafood wouldn’t win a contest with the worst tourist trap in Fisherman’s Wharf. The tuna tartare was pretty darn good, as it is in hundreds of restaurants around the world. I liked the guys working the bar, but I don’t see how tapas and omekase go together. I’d rather just pick what I want, which I will do next time, at a different tapas bar with better food.

Excellent tapas in El Born, recommended to us by a friend who wrote a travel guidebook to Barcelona. We came here pretty late(around midnight) on a weeknight and only had to wait a little while for seats. The atmosphere is lively, with everyone sitting up and down the bar chatting. It was fun to watch the food being made. When we were seated, we mentioned a couple of things to our server that we like, and he ended up suggesting some additional things and bringing them out one by one. They were all delicious — pan con tomate, shellfish in broth with garlic, fried artichokes, tuna tartare, and the tortilla de patatas. The standout was the tortilla, which was the best I’ve ever had, and possibly my favorite classic dish I ate in Barcelona. We ate so many delicious things, but this was really a classic dish executed in a very interesting way. It was the epitome of how magical the combination of egg and potato can be, with the silkiest texture. I seriously don’t know how they get the interior of the tortilla to be so smooth, almost to the point of being underdone, but just right — it’s not slices of potato inside like the typical tortilla, so I think maybe they mix very finely grated potato with the egg and cook it until just set, so it turns into this heavenly homogenous mixture. I’ll try to replicate it at home, with some minced onion and flecks of pancetta, but I doubt it will be as good! If I had a button I could press to magically have something from Barcelona appear in front of me on a plate, it would be this dish. The service was friendly and efficient. Our bill was a bit higher than I anticipated, but we did average a glass of wine per dish(the glasses were a little small), so maybe that’s what made it a tad expensive. But it was totally worth it — one of the best meals we had in Barcelona.

WOW do not leave here without drinking a full bottle of 12.50 euro wine, razor clams, calamari and STEAK. The steak with some sort of scalloped potatoes was incredible and the monkfish made me want to cry it was such a beautifully buttered whitefish. Great service but we waited in line for an hour on a rainy Friday afternoon for lunch. If you are four or nor you can make a reservation in the back room but the bar is fun too because you can watch the chefs. What a meal!

Food was good but expensive! The bad things was that we didn’t get to see the menu and we trusted the waiter a little bit to much when he said that he had a concept for us(all the tourists). He suggested 5 courses, which we said ok for. In the end we ended up whit 6courses we had to pay for = an extra tomato bread. When we were finished the waiter thrown out bill in our faces, so we had to pay and leave. Didn’t feel to welcome. He also put an extra beer on our bill, which we saw and he wasn’t really happy when we mentioned it. Expensive whit good food but they really try to fool all the tourists. The food is more affordable at La Boqueria at Ramblas.

Do not miss eating here. It is omakase style tapas– the waiter asks if there are things you don’t like, and boom– tapas are just brought. It’s very crowded and expensive but all worth it. I started w some tuna tartar on a potato dish– it looked amazing and tasted better. Next, was potatoes and steak– so flavorful. Last I had sliced ham — sliced from the leg sitting there. It’s how they roll in Spain . The staff wAs outstanding. Well worth it!

Delicious tapas and great personnel! At cal pep you don’t get to choose your menu, they serve you either 4 or 5 tapas. This place is always full of people which makes it super cosy! You pay a high price for the things you get, but it’s definitely worth visiting this place in El born!

Mas allá había alemanes y australianos, pero no he visto ningún local. Ninguno me impresiono.

Every restaurant in El Born area was pretty good. Cal Pep was my favorite! We showed up about 15 minutes before they open and people were already lining up. We were seated at a bar area and our server was excellent! He spoke English for us and Japanese for people sitting next to us. We didn’t see a menu so he recommended a few dishes to start with and we kept adding on the ones we liked or when we see other people are getting. I could see their fresh ingredients and there is one guy cooking everything on a griddle. Nothing fancy but simple, delicious food. We liked razor clams and order it three times(found out they were only 12 euro per plate. I would have ordered more if I knew it). This place is more expensive than other all you can eat tapa places around the area but you do get quality food and service. I highly recommend it!

A bit overpriced. I agree with previous reviewers that they did tend to offer the crowd pleasing dishes(mostly deep fried) to some customers, but not to us. While we were waiting for almost an hour and watching what others ordered we knew what we wanted and what to avoid. Our favs: Baby Squid with chickpeas — a very humble looking dish packed with richness and flavored. Baby clams — cooked with bits of ham. Grilled squid with vegetables. Squid was plump and juicy. So-so: Razor calms — a tad bit on the rubbery side for me. Deep fried artichokes. It was good just as most other tapas restaurants. Despite the long line, service was on point and we didn’t feel rushed.

Delicious grilled monkfish, and very well seasoned clams, also liked the beef tartar and peppers(they look like shishito peppers but I’m not 100% certain). The server was very helpful with suggestions based on providing him with our food preferences.

My wife and I were down to our last evening and meal on our trip to Barcelona. After a long slog through various review sites, including this one, we settled on Cal Pep. I was glad we did. If you happen to have a group of four or more, you’ll be directed to the dining room where there may be a different experience to be had; however, if your group is fewer, you’ll join the queue for a wait for seats at the front bar. The wait it is well worth it; the experience, delightful. Once your spot is secured, you’ll be met with a quick interview by some of the friendliest wait staff we encountered in all of Barcelona. They’ll ask you about any food allergies and whether you are comfortable with 4 – 5 servings of tapas at the chef’s and wait staff’s discretion. Once you’ve cleared that, sit back and enjoy! We certainly did as we were served patatas bravas, pan amb tomaquet(tomato bread), fried artichoke hearts, tuna tartar, some sort of potato quiche-type dish, and finally a roasted sea bream which, while delicious, was a bit over done. All the while, the wait staff will happily keep your glass topped up with whatever it is you desire to drink.

A lot of friends recommended this place, and I have to say although it didn’t look as I expected, it was very satisfying. The waitstaff are fun and wonderful. Went with no reservations and waited for seats at the bar. There is no menu, they just bring food out. The clams in wine sauce are super delicious and the lemon beer has a nice interesting taste. Glad I got to try this place out and will recommend to friends.

Cal Pep is an extremely popular(with tourists) tapas restaurant. I wouldn’t consider this restaurant the best place for tapas and was a little disappointed that they didn’t offer a menu. They pre-selected dishes for you based on their needs. Although the cava flowed nicely, I didn’t feel that these tapas dishes were exceptional. The ambience was noisy and the seating was tight around the bar. The only dish to highlight was the razor clams. They were tasty! Enjoy Barcelona.

Ziemlich teuer also. Dafür gibts 1 Stern Abzug.

Food is good but there are better places in Barcelona(Tapeo, Quimet & Quimet, El Xampanyet, etc.) — especially considering the wait(of mostly tourists), this place is a bit overrated and a bit overpriced. Things we ordered: 1) razor clams(good, 9 euro for 5) 2) grilled monkfish(also good, smallish fish for 17 euro, came with amazing potatoes and half a grilled tomato) 3) squid and chickpeas — 13 euro. Ask for a half portion if they will let you(if you’re only 2 people because it gets mundane after a while) — it’s pretty good but was way oversalted. Wouldn’t order this again. When I asked about the gambas they said 4 would cost 30 euro. Wtf? As I mentioned, overpriced. Food is good though.
