As soon as we headed up the stairs, the location and lanterns reminded me of many a basement or second-floor restaurant in Japan. The nostalgic feeling continued as we were presented with hot towels and a delicious zensai of lightly steamed broccoli with a delicate dressing. Seated at one of the tables with a griddle, we were a little shielded from the rest of the restaurant by string curtains and were left with a fine view of Vesterbro lighting up. Four of us decided order from the teppanyaki menu and though I was not one of them, I had a great time watching our chef, Murphy, cut and flip seafood and vegetables with ease while carrying on a conversation with us. He even managed to plate everything beautifully using only his grill spatulas. My only other experience with this type of restaurant was the infamous Benihana; luckily this place did not make me feel so uncomfortable as I did there. This means he will not try to toss a shrimp in your mouth or flip eggshells into his toque. Although he did incorporate some theatrics and set fire to some steaks! Watch your eyebrows, everyone! I wasn’t feeling hungry enough to get a set menu(next time!) so I went with the Sashimi-to-Sushi-no-Moriawase(195 dkk) which was pretty good and plated as beautifully as the teppanyaki menus. I was surprised to see that two of the nigiri were surf clam and squid. Though they taste mild, these two normally don’t show up on set sushi menus here and must be ordered specifically. All the pieces were good, though the rice fell apart on the shrimp nigiri and I would have liked a bit more vinegar. Then came the Tsukimi Soba(90 dkk). The noodles were great and the soup was mild and delicate. I was able to split this dish with a friend and ordered an extra raw egg(10 dkk) so we could both have one. They were happy to do that and brought extra bowls and utensils for us. Overall the service was good and the waitresses were always smiling. I also ordered the sunomono(70 dkk) which consisted of lightly pickled cucumber, seaweed, octopus, shrimp, and clam. It was lovely and refreshing. To round out the meal, I ordered black sesame ice cream(70 dkk) which was SO good but almost too much. It comes with a sesame cracker and a little cluster of lovely sour redcurrants to contrast with the two scoops of ice cream. They could easily charge 40 – 50 dkk and only serve one scoop, as the second one becomes a bit cloying; especially if you have eaten all the redcurrants from the start. I tried a bite of the dorayaki(45 dkk) which was tasty and, like everything else, beautifully presented, but the bread was dry. Though it was listed as an appetizer, the sunomono came at the same time as the sushi. I would have appreciated it earlier because the food took such a long time! It also took a long time to get the bill. We got there at 6:30 and ended up leaving around 10. There weren’t many other occupied tables in the restaurant so they probably either need to streamline the menu or get more cooks. Once they handle that(and the exorbitant drink prices; 30 dkk for a glass bottle of ginger ale is steep!), I’ll add the final star. Good to know: we booked a table through Restaurant2Night( ) and got 20% off our entire bill.

I was very skeptical at start about this restaurant, especially because it got three star rating and below from previous reviews and it seems like nobody(at least nobody from Unilocal) has visited this place recently. Although I have been walking along Vesterbrogade for so many times, somehow this place is invisible to me, only after Linnea R arranged an event to dine here that I discovered this place. I wasn’t hungry enough to order the teppanyaki menu so I decided to get the sushi and sashimi menu instead and split a bowl of soba with raw egg with Mina K while the rest of us ordered teppannyaki. Oh well, how sorry I was for not choosing it. The seafood one looked absolutely divine especially when the chef was cooking them in front of us(we were seated by the teppan table). Although the price seemed a bit steep for the menu(420 dkk), you got tons of food for it as I have witnessed from my dining company’s meal. You get the starter sushi /sashimi, you get the seafood teppannyaki with rice and miso soup and believe me, there were plenty of food to go around. One thing that pulls one star down from the perfect five was the SLOWNESS of the service. It took forever to get our food(well, the teppanyaki menu was a show of itself) but the sushi took a long time to appear, apparently. Even when we wanted to leave and wanted to get our bill, it took forever as well. This time it was alright because we had great dining company so we didn’t mind waiting but we spent what it was like four hours in the restaurant. Sorry, I’d like my food to be faster please. Hungry! *points to stomach*

My Copenhagen office is quite close to this Japanese gem and I’ve wanted to visit for some time. Suddenly I had some free time and decided to pop by. You really don’t need a reservation here, at least not for week nights. This restaurant has two sections, one with teppanyaki and one with tempura, a bit of sushi(not the reason why you’d visit them) and hot pots. In many ways Sukiyaki lived up to the expectations, at least I enjoyed myself very much. I liked the place, the waiters, the impressive samurai décor and the Japanese feel of it all, and I was quite impressed by the beautiful presentation of the food. I had a tempura menu with sushi and cold tofu as starter, tempura and misu for mains, and Japanese plum wine. It was beautifully presented so I wanted to give more than 3 stars — but the food is only a little over average and a bit pricy. And you’ll wait a loooong time for it to arrive. A few tips to bring my review from a 3 to a 4 is to cut back the menu substantially — two menus for two different kitchens gives one confused overwhelmed customer. I would go back to try out the teppanyaki, so I’ll probably write a follow up.

It was first time for me to eat in this restaurant and I had teppanyaki. The beef was tasty and rather tender, but not sure if it was fresh enough, my friend got bad stomach day after. Beside the meat they also have few pieces of vegetable, a bowl of rice and miso soup, but doesn’t taste as good as it should be. I like the Teppanyaki way of cooking food, but it would have been nice if the ingredients were in a better quality
