Now the food here is a 5 star in my book! So why didn’t I give it a 5 star? The transportation!!! I had to take MTR + bus to get here. If my cousin didn’t swear it’s some of the most delicious food and she got a great discount from Groupon, I would probably try to convince her to go somewhere else. Oh well… all’s forgiven because the food was really good. I normally hate all-you-can-eat buffets but I am cool with this one. Perhaps it was because there were 7 of us and we didn’t have to go to an assembly line to get our own food The food was served family style after we marked it off the«menu» — just like how you would order at a dim sum restaurant. There were several items that you could only order once. The staff was so well-trained they will even tell you which one you should order. Everything we had was really delicious and apparently this news is out because this place was packed!(We went on a weekday!)

Unlike the branch in Chinatown, the Serangoon Garden branch is spacious and is suitable for family gatherings. Because of the location, it probably serves more of the local living in the area. My family and I have been here at least 4 times in the last 3 months for our various celebrations. There are so many things for us to try that we never once order the same things twice– oh, with exception of the roasted pork which is available during the dim sum morning/lunch and dinner. If you are looking for a less crowded place to enjoy good dim sum, Yum Cha can be one of your option. If you are looking for a place to host large group of people over great meal, Yum Cha can be a place for you as well. Do book in advance.

decent dimsum at the serangoon country club. this place is gratifyingly near me, and so a good option for a lazy weekend brunch. it’s decent-to-above-average food at reasonable prices, and a great place for large family meals. objectively speaking, this place might not nearly be so popular with my family if not for the fact that we live but walking distance away. this place doesn’t win out in quality — but it does have that old-school yumcha charm that invokes nostalgia. not to say the food isn’t decent though — it’s just more homely than you’d get at the other lauded dumsum places. we like the stirfried glutinous rice, and their rendition of the liushabao — though the skin can sometimes be a little tougher than I’d like — is always filled with rich, flowing custard. it’s a decent spread of dimsum, and they also have an à la carte menu with lots of cantonese restaurant classics. the wait staff are primarily old aunties — they bring a character. I live in constant awe(and fear, somewhat) of them — they rearrange the dishes on your table, they almost make your order for you; but they are also the sweetest and most hardworking waitresses you can get. a pretty boisterous atmosphere, too, likely the result of having far too many cantonese families dining at a single place. very good for families, and pretty much a foregone conclusion if you live nearby.

The quality of dim sum at this branch did not disappoint on a Saturday afternoon with friends. It was extremely crowded by 1pm, and the number of people waiting outside for tables was growing fast. Although we had made reservations, it took a while(10 – 15 minutes) for them to attend to us. I had to be persistent and get their attention before they would check our reservation and direct us to an empty table. Similarly, it was a little difficult to get their attention once we were seated — the dining area is huge and I suspect they were short of servers then. However, once we started ordering our dim sum, the items arrived piping hot and in quick succession. The servers cleared empty plates with efficiency and without putting pressure on us to finish our food. The prawn dumplings had a good skin colour — translucent — and the texture was thin but strong enough to hold the ingredients. The siew mai were average — nothing too distinctive. The chicken feet were absolutely delicious, sweet and savoury. I’d recommend this place more for family gatherings than a place to have decent conversation. The branch is located inside Serangoon Gardens Country Club — walk in and turn left, past the carpark and into the building on the right side.
