Xin Wang Hong Kong Cafe – United Square

clean, comfortable and spacious.
very affordable and value for money portions with an extensive menu.
i had their crispy chicken chop on ramen noodles.
menu version was with curry sauce but they were accommodating to my request for a non spicy one.
chicken skin was yummily crispy!
hk milk tea was however a little too milky.

I have always avoided Xin Wang Hong Kong Cafes. One reason is because I love the authentic old school tea cafes in Hong Kong and deplore this kind of modern bastardization. My biggest gripe with most modern eateries is that its all flash and packaging with no substance. So taken at face value, there really isnt anything I would like about Xin Wang.
So as luck would have it, we found ourselves at United Square on the Saturday night just around dinner time, pondering our dining options. And in a bid to beat the throngs of dinner crowds, we walked into a relatively empty Xin Wang. Compared to other branches, this particular one seems a bit more upmarket. The fabric cushion chairs were actually very comfortable with lower back support, especially after a long day. The restaurant was also very clean unless some of their neighborhood branches.
The food options were frankly very impressive, with practically any HK street food fare is on offer. The drinks options is also varied and representative of HK. Food and drinks presentation is also very nice. Portions are actually quite hearty for the prices and taste wise not as bad as I feared. Service was unfortunately a bit lacking (which arguably is authentic HK too) and they seem to have trouble coping with the crowds.
Though my opinion of Xin Wang hasn’t change much, this particular branch is actually not too shabby. Variety and food quality almost gets it 4 stars. But poor service and possibly long waits barely gets it 2 stars.
