In this part of the world, many books on Islam are written in Malay. I haven’t been speaking proper Malay since ‘A’ Levels and as mom will tell you, I need a dictionary by my side if I have to read Malay material. This bookstore is my saviour. Books on Islam in English galore! Wardah Books sells books on anything in Islam, be it philosophy, Islamic art and architecture, history, Islamic picturebooks for the children, translations of the Quran and so on. The latest nasyeed is available here too. This bookstore is not just for people who want to find out more about Islam, it’s also for twits like me who comprehend things better in English and still want to continue learning as much as possible about our religion. Oh, and if you need a hand, don’t hesitate to ask the friendly staff for assistance. They are usually happy to help.

I came here once for an Alfian Sa’at reading. It’s a cosy bookstore specializing in Sufism and Islamic philosophy. Very aptly situated along Bussorah St, lining the panoramic of the iconic Sultan mosque. It’s probably the only bookstore in Singapore that specializes in English books on Islamic philosophy. Their demographic is more towards the youth and the academics and they are not just catering for the Malay Muslims but for all races, even the non-Muslims who are curious to read about Islam, the bookstore has a very welcoming vibe. They also have Islamic children’s books and this really adorable collection of dolls that recite prayers from the Quran. Final verdict: Will definitely come here for my fill of Islamic knowledge through books!

Nestled in a row of restaurants, boutiques and souvenir shops, Wardah Books is like a fresh breeze in the middle of a muggy afternoon. It’s a small jewelbox of a bookstore(shares premises with an Arabic school – step in to enquire!), with a focus on books relating to the Islamic faith(different branches of theology, social criticism, history, etc). They also carry a small selection of locally published books – when I was there I saw copies of the play Cooling Off Day, amongst other titles. I’ve only been there twice(and bought once) but what will bring me back are the people who staff the shop – they have a genuine love of readings and are sincerely interested in helping customers find what they need.
