This review is for a visit in 2014, so the accuracy may be in question. We popped by here for dinner in late 2014, and this place has an exterior that is completely opaque, and we had to roll open the doors and ask if they were open for dinner. There are heaps of Japanese salarymen having dinner here, even on a weeknight(probably a Thursday?). It was either this or a walk to Great World City, so this was it. We sat down and got a bottle of sake(decent sake list here), and many many many skewers to share. Prices are slightly pricey, I think the bill was about $ 200 for two. I would revisit, but it’s a little out of the way.

Not as good as it used to be(see my previous review). The food is quite over-flavored on my last visit. And the tsukune are definitely much smaller now.

We have been to Ichigo a few times, last time the service, the quality of the food, and the prices were remarkably disappointing. The service was officious, cordial and borderline rude(for Japanese standards, you would have to live there to know). The staff seem more concerned about their rigid reservation system and getting customers in and out quickly than the dining experience, and this took away from the positive vibe the dinner should have been. Also some staff can’t speak English or Japanese! Note that we have lived in Japan for many years. Be wary of the Chicken Sauté on the osusume menu — it is actually fried chicken, not sauteed, and is mostly koromo, skin and gristle, very little meat. The Horenso Salad has over-garlicky salad dressing, it smothered the salad — it is overpriced and they don’t mention that there is pork in it(though this is standard in Japan). The tskune is really good but ridiculously small for the prices. There was another item we ordered but it didn’t taste right, and had to send it back. Great Japanese does not have to cost this much. There are better alternatives, leave this one for those Japanese who rotely treat this as their enclave.

you’ll be lucky to get a reservation at this exclusive japanese joint. run by a japanese couple, they serve up some of the most amazing, authentic and artful japanese food that i’ve had in singapore. I recommend the tsukune variety platter($ 14 for 5 sticks), which is their in house specialty. They do cooked/grilled dishes(mostly chicken based), so no sashimi or sushi here. Their sake menu is extensive and reasonably priced, as evidenced by the many japanese regulars enjoying a bottle of sake. Tip: get a big bottle, and finish it up over several visits! they’ll keep your sake for a month.
