Tonkichi Isetan Scotts

HORRIFIC sushi!!! I ordered the sashimi with hamachi, tuna, and sweet prawn… all of it was slimy and inedible. What a waste of money. I think it was previously frozen and then sat out for too long. Definitely one of my worst sushi experiences.

Tonkichi is definitely on top of my very shortlist for tonkatsu. It’s really good, crispy and juicy, usually my to go place after shopping and before going to the movie upstairs. Place is always packed.

Ok two sides to the experience here. I’ll start with the food, which was really quite good. I ordered the chicken katsu Toji set, while my friend ordered the pork katsu set with soba. The chicken katsu was cooked in a claypot with simmering egg. Aside from being a bit too salty, the chicken itself was very flavorful and tender, and it really goes very nicely with the egg. The pork katsu was very nicely fried and not too oily, and it combined very nicely with the sesame seeds that we ground up ourselves.
The other side to the coin was the service, which was very substandard. They also ran out of sushi rice so my friend couldn’t order the sushi, grant it we were there an hour before closing, but a chain restaurant like this should not be running low on sushi rice! They also wrongly served us chawan mushi and promptly took it away once they realized their mistake. Overall they staff wasn’t too friendly and they definitely made a share fair of mistakes despite it not being very crowded at the time. Overall I would have given it 4 stars if it wasn’t for the service, because the food was pretty good.
