If you have not been to the basement of Isetan Scotts, it is time to make a trip. Food Republic has opened, and with it Toast Box and a ramen place. The Toast Box at Shaw House is different from the others as it has a tiny bakery attached. The bakery sells buns, tarts and bread and has a different queue from the main Toast Box line. You can order coffee with your baked goods now. The main attraction is the egg tart! It has 3 different fillings underneath the egg custard — golden lava(liu sha or salted egg yolk), coconut(grated coconut drenched in gula melaka or brown sugar) and mochi(chewy glutinous rice flour). I have only tried the golden lava and coconut. The golden lava was amazing, especially when warm. The liu sha would be a bit liquid and might ooze out if not careful. Not so nice when it was cold. So maybe just re-heat the tarts in the toaster oven for a while before eating. The coconut was nice but a bit too sweet, still a nice afternoon treat when you need a perk-me-up or sugar rush. The crust was very buttery, similar to pineapple tart, and broke off easily. Beware the crumbs. The coffee is good, as per the usual Toast Box standard. Sometimes the staff may help you find a table during lunch period. The turnover of tables can be quite fast as people do not linger over their food(local stuff like laksa, curry chicken, mee siam etc) and drinks during lunch time. Quite a perfect combination for the Breadtalk group. Eat at Food Republic, and hop over for coffee and old school cream cakes or tarts at Toast Box.
