I picked up reading quite late but it all started in this library where there was a reading activity going on and you need to read a number of books in a month and write a review of what you write. At the end of the one-month activity, there will be a lucky draw and you can pick your prize from there. It really strive me to read more books. I wasn’t able to digest so much book in such short period at that age but all thanks to my cousin that had helped me so much with the review. That’s my good memories of the library and today, after much renovation, the library has become a conducive place for different age group. Children, adults, teenage and senior citizen can fit in one corner in the library easily. Senior citizens can be seen reading daily newspaper on the second floor. Children will be on the first floor in the children section and reading. Sometimes there are story telling sections that children can participate. Nowadays, borrowing books in the library has make it so convenient and there isn’t any reason for you not to read.

This is where I grew up with Roald Dahl. The Toa Payoh library has been around since the 70s and I’m thankful for that(though I wasn’t around yet in the 70s). I’m also thankful to my mother who successfully instilled the love of reading(and eating) in her kids. Many a days in my childhood, especially on the weekends, I could be found head-in-the-books at the library. My mother would be in the Chinese language section while I looked for English books. It was camping in the library that made me lean towards bestsellers — people read them for a reason. Toa Payoh library is also well-stocked with comics, especially the good ones like Dilbert or Pearls Before Swine. No, no more Garfield please. The place has been renovated a few times, there was once a Delifrance café was even built at its sides, but it has since been gone. I’d like a café again please?
