Order a bowl of Bak Kut Teh from the friendly towkay and be greeted by tender meat that slides off easily from pork bones which have been boiled and simmered in flavourful stock. You know you’ll be asking for soup refills.(at no extra cost)

Most of Bukit Timah feels like an upscale neighbourhood, mostly because it’s true. I have spent all my life going to school around these parts and cannot think of anywhere else that comes so close to feeling like a heartland neighbourhood. The start of Sixth Ave has a couple of kopitiams once you pass the bars and restaurants. I like it. The prawn noodle shop here is very good and you can personally witness the maestro cooking the stock and prepping the ingredients most evenings after he closes(if you didn’t already know, making prawn stock is an elaborate task). The drinks situation is a little odd, because it doesn’t actually have its own drinks stall. You can order the zi char and drinks from next door. But it’s still a nice, relaxed spot to have dinner. They also open till late, so that’s a big plus. Dinner for 3 with drinks and beer cost under $ 30 the other night, which is usually the price of one entrée down the road. So I’m a happy girl whenever I’m here, because the food is also quite good.
