This is basically my local eatery. Always very friendly and fast service. I wasn’t going to review it — it’s full enough as it is on weekends — but with the other review at 3* it’s time to bat for my home team. I’ve been told by a taxi uncle that the curry puffs are why people drive halfway across the island to Selera, but personally they are a bit too spicy for me. So are the sardine puffs. Good, but ouch. My favorite items are all the chicken rices(standard roast/boiled, BBQ, lemon). Better than most food courts and cheap for the area at $ 3 – 4. I occasionally have a beef char kway teow. Rest of the menu offers too much choice for me to settle. Then you get all the deep fried stuff which is very hard to find near Dhoby Ghaut these days — pisang goreng, very sweet and soft with crispy batter; deep fried jackfruit(with seed, of course); banana balls… all fried before your eyes for your immediate enjoyment. Selera has been around for decades and I can see why. I hope the place never gets«renovated» as most buildings in the area seem to be these days(I miss Noir Art which roasted the best coffee in Singapore as far as I’m concerned; now it’s an always-empty steakhouse). There’s plenty of competition just across(underground) the highway at Tekka Market and its million stands, but it’s so much nicer to just sit and enjoy the warm air in the shade with a milo peng.

Very popular place. Great curry puffs. Good peanut balls and chicken rice. Lots of bananas but they won’t sell you one. We call it the«no bananas place». I am usually ignored by the staff while everyone else seems to be served first so need to wait a few extra minutes to get attention. Have walked away empty handed a couple of times when I just couldn’t get served which is a bit of a waste of time
