Robinsons contacted my wife to resolve the matter — though they did so only after she posted a similar review on their Facebook page. I’m glad it was resolved, though Robinsons could have done so with less fuss. Back to the store itself — they carry a good range of items, though they can be pricey. In general, retail in Singapore is really not cheap at all, and I often just order online. But there are deals to be had during sales.

Moving to Singapore from the US makes it a little tough for me to give retail stores on Orchard really high reviews. Let’s face it, I’m cheap! The better the prices and the higher the quality, the higher your rating with me. Robinson’s department store did have a good variety of products with sections for men, women, household, cosmetic, etc. If you’re looking for a bra bigger than an A or B cup, you need to go elsewhere. I did see some cute dresses and swimwear, but nothing I’d pay over $ 150 for. Best to catch them during good sales! Overall, the store is clean, well-organized and has a friendly staff. Overpriced in my opinion and better to check out Giant or Mustafa Center for household goods.

I have mixed feelings about the new Robinsons Orchard. It used to be at Centrepoint where it has been there for decades before it moved to its current location which used to be Heeren shopping mall(sometimes taxi drivers or locals still refer to it as «where Heeren is», to add to the confusion there is still the Heeren office tower next to it). I think I like the old Robinsons because of its familiarity and warmth. A tired looking 4 – 5 levels of shopping where one can take in almost everything in a glance. This new Robinsons is glitzier with bright lights and flash. It has a bit of a circular feel on each level and thus makes it harder to see from one end to the other end. You really need to walk around each level to explore, or at least until you know the place very well. The brands are more upmarket for its beauty hall, women and men fashion. The top level has a mini banking facility for OCBC customers. There used to be OCBC staff stationed there though I hardly see them now. You can still get cash from the ATMs though. The beauty hall uses lots of mirror so it looks bigger than it actually is at the back. It can be very easy to walk right into the mirrored wall, so be careful. It also sells many types of hair brushes from Tangle Tweezer to Kent and other high end brushes. I never knew a hair brush can cost over $ 50 and towards or over the 3 figure mark. The basement is my favorite level as it has 3 dining options(Japanese or coffee and cakes, plus a gelato stand). The household products are just so prettily displayed and inviting. There is also a laundry service and another ATM there. It is still a good departmental store which is everything under one roof — beauty stuff, hair salon, facial cabins, food, kids stuff, women and men fashion, household products, bedding, banking facilities, laundry/drycleaner, etc.

I love the newly revamped Robinsons which replaces the old Hereen. I only had less than an hour to walk through the entire building but was pretty impressed by what I saw. The interior design is such a refreshing change from the usual run of the mill malls along orchard road. Think open shelves, quirky furniture accessories, funky wall colors and fixtures. The basement level looks similar to the also newly renovated Tangs Plaza basement, so I guess this must reflect the latest trend in ID. They’ve also brought in a lot more brands, e.g. my favourite Sergio Rossi! There is also a section showcasing vintage/2nd hand Hermes/Chanel bags. Although the price tag is way beyond reach for me, its nonetheless satisfying to drool over! The accessories/Jewellery section still carries some of the familiar ‘cheaper’ brands but I must say the new minimalistic display and layout really elevates these pieces. I would not have bothered to give them a 2nd look if they were all chucked together in a shiny messy pile like they so often are in the Jewellery section of most shopping malls. The downside to me is the location which takes a bit longer to walk to. Other than that, I’m looking forward to returning soon to have a more leisurely look the 2nd time round.
