I love this place. Authentic peranakan and cheap. Ayam buah keluak is good, though sometimes the gravy can be slightly diluted if you were to come in late. For a tip, of you wanna eat good chap chye, eat it on a weekday as I have a feeling they cook it over the weekend. And we know good chap chye is one that is stewed over for a couple of days. More flavour. More yum. The prawn nanas and the Assam prawns are fantastic and my favourite is the bakwan kepiting. Its old school and they still don’t accept credit cards. No gst and no service charge and… And… you can bring your own wine. If I were to compare the Frankel avenue and this, I’d go to this as the food is just as good and cheaper. And more things to do if you wanna digest your dinner since skating i12 and parkway is just a walk away.

This is my first visit to a Peranakan restaurant.(I had a local foodie wingman) The interior is old school. There is a picture of grandma on the wall. I assume that the recipes are hers. The staff wasn’t chatty so i wasn’t able to get the scoop. Good: Fried pork roll, buah keluak(curried chicken with these big black nuts with the nut meat minced with spices and stuffed back into the nut), nonya chop chye(cabbage with fermented beans and other tasty bits), homemade cold barley drink Not so good: fish ball soup. Someone dropped the white pepper shaker into the pot!

There are mixed reviews on this one. I haven’t found a spectacular Peranakan eatery aside from Daisy’s Dream Kitchen(to die for, I tell you), but find myself frequenting Peranakan Inn most out of the many along the Katong stretch. Perhaps it’s the cool, dim interiors that whisks diners 30 years back. Perhaps it’s the homely food, hits the spot but not to the extent of knocking your socks off. Perhaps it’s the nonchalant service, no foreign talents here. It’s how I imagine home cooking to be. No frills, just pure comfort. Servings aren’t huge, and three dishes are just nice for two to share. Any more, and additional orders are a must. Parking? Here, I stifle a snigger. You’d be better off if you had a chopper — at least, you can land on the roof. Good luck finding a spot to park here.
