Located near the Little India MRT. Very convenient short 3 minute walk. A bit away from the tourists and riff raff you’ll find at bar central in Boat or Clark Quay. This place has a very chill vibe, perfect for the beer aficionado. Comfy bar tables and chairs, outdoor area, and of course… great beer selections spanning from Belgium, US, UK, Denmark, Germany, Australia, and Japan! Coming here… of course I have to get an Owl beer(aka, Hitachino)! They have a few varieties of Hitachino as well as Shiga and Minoh. Don’t expect super loud music blasting in your ear… but a relaxing low key vibe with Top Hits playing in the background and quality premium beers! Theres a happy hour as well from 11:30 to 9 with deals on buckets of beer. Even Hoegaarden is available! There are also food bites(20+ bar snacks, burgers, salads, mussels, etc…), so you definitely won’t go hungry! Make a stop here to find a great selection with a neighborhood vibe. Great service from the staff as well! Additional note: Their beers are all serves in the Beer brand’s specialty glasses! They have a whole inventory… so I got my Hitachino poured in my Hitachino glass… Primus beer poured in my Primus glass… all poured correctly in their respective glasses *thumbs up*

Über dive, craft beer bar with moules-frites on the menu. Drafts are limited to Primus and Paulaner, but the bottle menu is the real gem here. Extensive Belgian and German list with all your favorites. I treated myself to a 0.5l bottle w/cork stopper of malty, fruity Jan Hertog(10%abv) for S$ 26. Incidentally, Wed. Is ladies night; 2 – 1 cocktails. Curious how a craft beer bar could exist apart from the expat community. Here’s hoping it works out because Owl’s Brew is a rare breed in Singapore.

Other than being an extremely hard place to get to. This is one of my favorite places to drink beer in terms of atmosphere. You almost feel like you are drinking at a local pub in the German country side or in rural Suburban America. Beer posters line the walls with such catch phrases as «Drink Beer, Conserve Water.» The place was empty when I went in the afternoon with my wife and friends and we had free reign to be one of those loud obnoxious Americans. Don’t worry we asked the bartender if we could be loud, and he kindly obliged. :D Since I was in that American mood today, an homage to my motherland, I decided to get a Deschutes River Ale from the state of Oregon. I’m not a sophisticated beer drinker, but thought it was really good(rated 90 points on Beer Advocate). There is a whole selection of other beers from all around world, if the particular beer I tried doesn’t tickle your fancy. They have an entire fridge and beer cases in the back(near the restroom) to prove it. The food is top notch. The truffle fries were amazing, very different from other truffle fries I’ve tried on the Red Dot. Although this was the only food entrée I tried, I was turned on by the smell of the sausages as it whisked by me on its way to be served to the patrons outside. Overall, fantastic place to visit if you want a quiet relaxing place to drink and discuss amongst friends about life in general. The top 40 playlist playing in the background is a definite plus!

I walked and walked and walked through the dark streets, through crowds of strangers to get to Owls Brew. I probably won’t suggest you walking in the back streets in the area when dark. I just followed my Goggle Map directions… Arriving at 10 pm on a Saturday night. and why was the sign said CLOSED! Ended up Owls Brew was closed early because of some«drunk» patron issue. And of course I was disappointed. I just want to drink good beers… Ended up the nice owners let me have the beers to go instead. I rather stay in and enjoy my beers and have a good chat with the nice folks that running the place. Maybe next time for their $ 6 Happy Hour 2pm-7pm!

Eats: I recommend the wings, truffle fries and the shishamo. All good beer food. I’ve had the wings quite a few times since my last review. Firstly, for the boutique specials, Owls Brew is likely the only if not one of a handful of establishments that will bring in small limited quantities of specialty beers that you may be keen to try. Most other establishments will pretty much just blow your special requests off. Speak with Seren and if you’re polite and ask nicely, something can usually be worked out. Abstrakt 10(11.5% ABV) Again with the velvet gloved alcoholic fist. Then a soothing berry laced wheaty ride all the way to the end then a surprising finish that can only be described as umami. Of course there are the obvious luo han guo flavor notes. The 10 has a taste of jasmine green tea?! Overall a very euphoric experience today. I don’t exactly know why. I think it had to do with the fact that I had the 10 on an empty stomach. More likely that my constitution just found a better balance between 11.5% ABV and the gustation of a finely crafted Abstrakt. Finally, it could be the small differences in each batch that could have accounted for the impression that this 10 was lighter on the palate, had a more fruity and less musky nose and finished a little cleaner, hinting of a pale ale finish. Abstrakt 12(11.7% ABV) Strong alcoholic shock. Followed very quickly herbal flavor notes reminiscent of luo han guo(same color!!). Followed by a prolonged sustained base notes of roasted barley and a wheaty aftertaste. Strong yeasty nose, smells like Marmite. Very hefty beer not only because of the alcohol content but more significantly because of the strong medicinal taste profile which is not for the faint of heart or beer neophytes. Finishes with a very satisfying wet French kiss(with lotsa tongue) of a malty smack which lingers just long enough to leave you wistful and just a little giddy. Huyge Brewery’s Delirium Tremens(8.5%ABV) «Best Beer in the World» 2008 World Beer Championships. Little wonder. This is a VERY nice beer indeed! Head has dank cheese-mold pungency. Hints of formic acid finished off with a nice tang of yeasty beery alcoholic vapor. Nice malty hit on first taste which rapidly evaporates into a lengthy hoppy slide to the end. A bit clingy on the palate. Good for those who bask in the hops. A good strong beer. Ideal for lazy afternoons where you’re not planning on doing much besides hanging out at joints like owls brew. «Best Beer in the World» indeed. Has to be served ice cold, otherwise the triple fermented flavors become overwhelmingly cloying. A very refreshing brew if server properly, with enough heft to not be mistaken for a light beer or a pale ale. Orval(6.9%ABV) Had a deep amber color and a deep amber flavor. Yes, amber has a flavor! Nutty body which turned then turned again into something fruity and actually almost citrusy and then had a brief finish of hops. Nice mouthfeel. Went down smoothly and set up the palate for another swig almost immediately. Should be served cold. Definitely accompanied by snacks able to withstand the wheaty, malty flavors. Maybe tsukemono or bakkwa.
