Three weeks ago I got bitten by a tick and had to be admitted to the ER observation ward(EDTU) for 24 hours. I would give the hospital 4 stars if not for two issues with doctors. First the good stuff. The time it took from registration to the triage nurse assessment was 15 minutes and around the same wait time to see the doctor. So I was admitted and on a drip within 1 hour, which is quite efficient for a public hospital. The doctors were great for the most part in explaining my diagnosis and answering questions, even with different shifts. The negatives were that the doctor that did my initial diagnosis forgot to order an x-ray as instructed by his senior doctor, who later clarified the mistake with me on her rounds(I got an x-ray within 10 minutes of her realizing I didn’t get one). Secondly, the 2 doctors on the morning shift openly discussed plausible diagnosis’s for my condition in a «Whoa *eyes wide*! Do you think this is…» manner, like I wasn’t 3 feet away listening with a swelling foot. No patient wants to feel like a specimen, let alone hear that your illness could be chronic(if you’re not an outdoorsy person, google Rocky Mountain rash and Lyme disease, to get an idea) and your doctor is detached enough to view you as a textbook case in real life. Other than that, the other doctors and all the nurses that cared for me were excellent. They were gentle, patient and thorough in looking after patients in the ward. Considering how hectic and crazy some of the ER cases are(trust me I could write a book after 1 night in the EDTU), these healthcare providers should be applauded for their professionalism and ability to work together. The best bit was that when I got my bill a week later, it was about $ 200. As far as I’m concerned as a Singaporean, we seriously have some of the best entry level healthcare in the world and it is affordable. True fact.
