I’m not really a Japanese curry person but still i thought i give this joint a try since my colleague who’s never adventurous in food was the one who suggested it(that’s considered epic since it never happen before). I was surprised that the menu had seafood so i chose fish as my choice of meat rather than the usual pork or chicken. The portions were huge and the curry to my delight wasn’t what i remember it to be from my other unpleasant experiences elsewhere. I ordered normal hot for the curry and it wasn’t too spicy so you might wanna up a couple notches if you love that spicy heat! The fish was fresh and covered in a thin layer of crispy batter. It was easy to separate and not greasy but still it didn’t hit the wow spot for me. I also ate a piece of the pork katsu and it was nicely fried(cripsy) and the meat tender but it didn’t wow me as well. I think I must have relied too little on the role of the curry for flavor because everything was kinda bland to me. The staff were efficient and friendly. we didn’t have to wait for a seat though you will only be given a seat after you order. the food didn’t take too long which is great for the working crowd who is «eager» to return to the office. Having my lunch here made me wonder what am i missing from Ginza Barin which is just next door from Monster Curry and charging $ 6 more.

One of my favorite places, GoGo Curry closed down after Ion Orchard’s basement undergone renovation. In it’s place, Monster Curry took over. Unlike CoCo Ichibanya, Monster Curry is not as popular a curry-place. Don’t be fooled by the huge plates that they serve to customers. In fact, the portion is more suited for a single person. Even for it’s extra large ‘monster’ combos, I was left hungry after sharing with a friend. The curry is not as spicy and tends towards the black-sweet type of japanese curry. The meats were OK, although I could tell that they were pre-fried, but I don’t think one can expect too much. Overall, I find the curry place overpriced and one is better off dining at CoCo Ichibanya.
