Took my mom, a chocolate-lover, out to Max Brenner’s as a birthday treat. Food and presentation-wise, it was amazing. I loved my shake, and my mom was very pleased with her hot chocolate. The lava cake is definitely a must if you’re able to squeeze in a little more chocolate-y goodness(which we of course did). They also had the cutest little mugs and glasses — I wish they’d let us take them home. Taking off a star cause service-wise, I guess I was expecting a little better. Dirty dishes sat at a neighboring table for a while after a couple had left and the store was a little cramped, with the back of your chair most likely hitting the person behind you. But overall, albeit a little pricey, I’d say it’s definitely worth a shot if you have a sweet tooth!

The iconic bald-headed man café is now at Katong. Known for its rich chocolate drinks and delightful desserts, Max Brenner Chocolate Bar has found its way to the east. In need for a sugar rush, I decided to visit the place. The café was brightly lit, yet the ambience was cozy and appropriate for having an idyllic dessert. Craving a hot chocolaty drink, I ordered a cuppa Dark Chocolate that came in a Hug Mug that fits perfectly into your hand, hence the name. The drink was rich, milky and enjoyable, certainly a drink that warms the heart. To satiate my sweet-toothed craving, I ordered a warm Chocolate Soufflé, which was heavenly. Thick molten chocolate oozes out of the cake immediately after breaking into it. The chocolate is thick and rich, while the cake is moist and delightful. Coupled with the vanilla ice cream on the side, the flavor of the dessert was incredible. The berry compote complemented the dish, as the tartness of the berries helped to combat the sweetness of the chocolate. Service was average. The staff were considerate, although not very attentive given they were pretty busy with the crowd.

The shop is constantly crowded, and the wait staff are harried although kudos to them for maintaining a pleasant disposition. A great point is that the venue stays open till really late, which is good for hanging around in before catching a midnight movie upstairs. I didn’t pick a chocolate option(yes, I know it’s a chocolate bar…) as I was looking for something a little lighter. Went ahead with the yellow granita, which is essentially a mind bendingly sour option. Could not even finish half, and would not re-order.

Chocolate by the bald man actually tastes pretty good. They’ve got an array of chocolate cakes, shakes and makes. One of my favourites has got to be the suckao. It’s a shot of steamed milk and a saucer of chocolate chips of your choice — milk, dark or white. My palette seems to enjoy dark chocolate much more than the others, but that’s not the say the milk and white chocolate are bad. I also like their peanut butter shake. Its rich, its peanut buttery, its packed with so much yummy goodness that’s hard to resist. I guess you could say its one of those places that can satisfy the most hardcore chocaholics.
