I must say Marine Parade is one of my favourite libraries in Singapore, and not just because it’s my neighbourhood library. I like how it’s designed; it’s very modern and bright. I also like the layout; everything makes sense. The adult fiction books are all on the ground level, which makes it easy(at least for me) to find what I’m looking for and check out. The upper levels are also very cosy, with a lot of seating but still, not enough desks. At least the lighting is very warm. I’m still very amazed at how advanced the self checkout is. All you need to do is stack your books on this thing and it will automatically scan what you have. Insert your library card and you’re done! All checked out, with the option to email or print your receipt. The book drop, though hidden amongst the new releases, also sounds high tech. When you drop your book, it lights up and beeps. Considering how seamless check out is, I wouldn’t be surprised if it checks in your books automatically. Hooray for 21st century libraries!

Unlike many of the other public libraries, Marine Parade Public library is not near an MRT station but is located in the community centre near Parkway Parade shopping mall. It is surprisingly not as inconvenient a location as I’d thought as there are many buses that go to the area and is quite central for the Marine Parade area. The library is big, spanning 3 floors. There are many comfortable chairs and couches sprawled around the compound, making the place a haven for students who need a quiet place to study. There is also a Café Galilee there which is sufficient for a hungry, or bored, student who needs a drink and maybe a snack. It is the ideal free place to relax and read a book, although you might not be able to find a seat with many students frequenting the library.
