Excellent prata and murtabak at this restaurant, the food is amazing. This would have had 5 stars if only the service was better.

Had Chicken Briyani and it was tasty with usual spices. Not oily but chicken could be more tender. This is not the ‘dum’ cooked type. Plenty of rice provided. too much for me. Papadum was tasty. Better than most. Location is remote. Ambience/cleanliness –shd improve. Will like to try kebabs next with said artery clogging pratas with dips… will takeaway if tables are still yucky. Maybe the auxillary cleaning crows are not doing their job.

I like bad meals. There, I said it. Greasy, fast and fake are all right up my alley but because I worry about orphaning my two dogs via a cardiac arrest, I try to limit them as best as I can. So all the artery clogging meals that I choose to partake in had better be worth my while. Today was a pig out day and it was decreed that being around Bedok Simpang = ice cream, mee pok and prata, in that exact order. Post mee pok, Mahmoodiya it was. Nothing like a good fatty mamak meal to wash down a good fatty cheena meal just moments prior eh? I usually go for all the Maggi gorengs I can find, and while Mahamoodiya’s maggi hasn’t disappointed me yet through all my 3am cravings, the Disc of Ghee Glory was serenading my name. Ordered up one prata kosong and prata bawang and wow. It’s a bit different from the other pratas I’ve had so far– lighter and fluffier as compared to the flattened crispy slabs that are commonplace. Dual dips of curry and chili sauce provide a good kick of heat. Worth a heart attack? Let’s just say I could think of worse ways to pass on. The place is one of those mamak institutions– fat lizards on the wall, peeling signboards, and a nonchalant cat loitering about. Service is non existent until you’ve ordered, and then servers start asking you if you’ve ordered or need a drink. Leftover food from other patrons sit next to you for a good half of your meal. The tentative plans of what the eat on the next trip down to Simpang. Suppers(and second lunches for greedy people) are made of these. Why would you have it any other way?

The main Simpang Bedok food spots are all in a row, and buzzing — Spize and the lot of them are all there, and it’s just become too much, with the touting and the sitting at specific sections. I feel like not the cool kid in school all over again, and now I have to pick the cool food stall as well? I know you know what I mean(intentional inception and brain/tongue twister all at once). So I step across the road from all the madness, and enjoy a fantastic prata plaster, and a decent cup of teh ais. And now I think I love this place. It’s got it’s own fans, and they sit along the side of the restaurant, all the way to the back alley. They’ve got pretty good bee hoon goreng, and indian rojak too. I don’t need much else! The best part is… I don’t feel half as harassed as I would be if was sitting at the cool kids table. When will I go back to the madness? I’ll think about it, but now that I’ve tried the magic at Mahmoodiya, don’t hold your breath.

In comparison to the bustling side of Simpang Bedok where Spize is, is New Mahamoodiya Restaurant just across the street. It is a small corner shop with a coffee shop setting. New Mahamoodiya specializes in Indian Muslim food like Roti Prata, Nasi Goreng, Mutton Soup, and drinks like Teh Tarik. I recall patronizing this stall more than 5 years ago, going there monthly to satisfy my occasional prata craving. But I stopped after realizing that their standard dropped tremendously. Just a few weeks ago, I realized that the same shop was still there so I decided to drop by and try the food again. Our orders arrived really fast and we did not have to wait, because of the lack of customers there. Sadly, the quality of the food had not improved. The Mutton Soup was diluted and tasteless. The Nasi Goreng was average and not fantastic. Even the drink I ordered, Teh Ping, was bland and not sweet. It was an overall disappointing experience.
