cheap is good, free is better. it is not free here but definitely cheap! $ 2.50/$ 3 will buy you a substantial and delicious bowl of fish ball or minced meat noodles. they open early and usually sell out by lunch time. be prepared to queue for this elderly hawker couple’s fare. they were formerly at farrer rd. after the renovations there, most of the good hawkers left. and lao jian cheng is one of them. for some time, i was wondering where they went. then i chanced upon them at ABC and the rest is history. noodles here are always well cooked. their version is the vinegary teochew type. but no flat fish though. just a hearty bowl and a tasty cloudy broth.
