We enjoy going to Gold Class when there’s a film we think might be worthy of the high ticket price. I found out 5 years ago that theatre etiquette here leaves a lot to be desired. My last visit to a multiplex was Tom Cruise’s Edge of Tomorrow. The Auntie beside me was compelled to verbally announce and physically point out to her husband every time one of the hundreds of villainous aliens popped onto the screen. More than once I’ve encountered groups having ongoing conversations and making running commentary throughout the film at normal speaking volume with no consideration for anyone. Parents let children carry on without disciplining them, etc, etc, etc So booking seats in Gold Class where there is smaller auditorium with more distance between me and my neighbor is usually a better experience. Today was not the case. The young ladies in front of us ordered food. Ten minutes into the movie, the first dish was delivered and they began to take multiple flash photos of it and post them online(to Unilocal?!Nah. It was FB. I had a clear view of her phone.). Five minutes later, when the other dish arrived — more flash photos and posting them on FB. The wait staff just ignored it but I noticed everyone else was bothered. To be fair, usually it’s a better experience. The auditoriums are comfortable. Each pair of electric recliners shares a small table with a call button for requesting service. Everyone gets a blanket. The auditoriums are simple and plain. The lobby décor at the Vivocity and Suntec theaters have a tacky modern Chinese Lounge vibe. Makes me feel like a girl with a sash is going to approach me and hand me a karaōke microphone. The waitstaff is always friendly, but they never seem overly enthusiastic. Mostly young, shy introverted types and not quite the outgoing types that you usually find waiting tables. We normally don’t look at the food menu and go straight for mixed salty/sweet popcorns and Coke Lights. When it’s fresh, the popcorn is excellent. The Coke Light served in a glass is ALWAYS watered down less than 10 minutes after they serve it. Halfway though the film, the Coke is undrinkable. Ideally, we like to bypass the waiters completely and get the Popcorn and Cokes at the main concession counter and bring it into Gold Class. The paper cup helps to keep the ice from melting as fast and the popcorn is often fresher tasting. The hot food leaves a lot to be desired. The couple of times we’ve ordered from the menu, the food wasn’t very good — greedily overpriced bar food quality small portions. I see them advertise dining set meals, and the photos always look like poorly conceived microwaved food with carrots and peas and strange beverages included. Trying to eat a meal in a dark theater hunched over a little side table does not appeal to me. We would never go to a showing that required us to buy the set meal. The Good: The Recliners, Smaller Auditoriums, The Blankets, Usually a smaller and more civilized crowd, Hands down the biggest perk of Gold Class is you get to exit through the lobby and not herded down a back staircase where you’re dumped out onto the sidewalk(like a spent hooker) next to the taxi stand. The Bad: The Food is mediocre and Service is always friendly but unenthusiastic. Cokes served in real glasses get watered down immediately as the ice melts quickly, Waitstaff forget they are also Ushers and allow people to take flash photos during the film. The Verdict: Still better than a regular theater. The price is steep($ 40 each), but it’s a nice treat now and then. Book online in advance because with so few seats, they fill up quickly.

Came here for my partner’s alumni event — the tickets to Spiderman Gold Class were sold at a far discounted price so we decided to check it out. We wouldn’t pay over $ 70 for movie tickets otherwise. But after this experience, we just might change our minds. You hang out at the lounge before the the movie starts and you can get free flow of soft drink and peanuts, you have to state your preference of food that will be served to you in the theatre. Once you enter the theatre and get to your very comfortable seat, you’ll see a blanket you can wrap yourself with. The seat is adjustable to the extent that you can almost lie flat on your back while enjoying the movie with the blanket. You get a complimentary popcorn. And then while watching the movie, you will be served champagne, your main course and dessert. I ordered the lasagne — it tasted like a freshly microwaved instant lasagne but if you’re hungry, you’ll lap it up. Besides you’re too distracted by the movie anyway. Dessert was a very generous(in fact overly generous) portion of blueberry cheesecake. After the popcorn and lasagne, there really isn’t much room for dessert! It was an all-round luxurious experience, if not for the food. The service was unintrusive and if the movie is good then thats a bonus for you. We, very much enjoyed The Amazing Spiderman. Just a tip, you might want to go for Gold Class for movies that last more than 2 hours, so you’ll have enough time to digest your food and enjoy your popcorn and dessert… and hopefully the movie too!
