Recommended by a friend as having one of the better Penang Style Char Kway Teow’s in Singapore, we eventually found this place on the second attempt after an initial attempt led us to the wrong location. Although close to Food court’s, Gurney drive is actually indoors. You make a selection from the menu, write down your selection and hand in and pay at the counter. When ready they will deliver to your table. Price was on the higher side, but the quality was good. The Kway Teow with crabmeat added was tasty, but a little light on the spice. No problem adding some heat with the chili sauce provided. Next time I would not order the crabmeat and just keep the regular shrimp and cockles. Good selection of juices on the menu to wash the food down.

With the $ 10 for $ 20 groupon voucher. I decided to bring my family to checkout this neighborhood eatery. We quickly realized that there was no 10% charge but there was still the usual 7% gst on top of the prices. We ordered the char Kway Teow which had huge pieces of lard. The taste was so so. I think my dad can cook better and the hawker center has better ones too! The Mee goreng had a lot of sotong. Making it more value for money than the char Kway Teow with two crunchy prawns. The chendol wasn’t too bad. But there was a lot of gula Melaka and it didn’t have the Penang chendol jelly.

I ordered their mee goreng and regretted paying $ 6.90 for normal tasting mee goreng. Well, I should have guessed that most stores that post up some elaborate history about their founder and history might be fiction and I should have done some research on the place before heading in with my friends. Well, that’s not to say that I haven’t been in worse places before. But $ 6.90 for my mee goreng was so expensive! For foodies out there, there are better penang food at more affordable prices set in the same kind of airconditioned setting. Gurney drive is definitely not in the top of my list though.

Another one of these ‘traditional Asian delights made slightly more posh’ places. I didn’t know Gurney was jumping on the bandwagon of Asian delights franchise. I’ve only eaten at the Ang Mo Kio branch and it was a pleasant dining experience. I’ve tried a couple of penang style dishes here and all of them were very decent. I remember having Ngoh Hiang, Assam laksa, penang fried kway teow, prawn noodles and Kang Kong with Cuttlefish. Yep, I over ordered and at the end of it, I swore never to do it again. The food was very decent and the service that we got was good. Given that this is a little bit of a restaurant. the prices are more expensive than the hawker centres, but it wasn’t exhorbitant. The quality of the food was also a fair bit better than most Penang hawker stalls. Ang mo kio residents are lucky to have a branch in the area.
