What originally turned out to be a love fair with the Capuccino art work at the Millenia Walk Commune Flagstore, turned into a love affair with the Commune brand of Modern Contemporary Furnishings. Once I found out that Commune had a larger showroom in Defu Industrial Estate(literally in the middle of nowhere), I simply had to check it out! Commune’s furniture designs traces its roots from the creative genius of multiple designers(five I believe), who represent both Eastern and European backgrounds. Their product offering, in my opinion, can be best described as European designed, but Asian Inspired. The wooden pieces are more dark-brown in nature, which matches more with my taste, than other furniture shops that feature more lighter wood colored furnishings. For those from the USA, think of West Elm back home. However, what really separates West Elm furniture and Commune, is that it is more Asian-inspired and more representative of a modern-Asian home. Prices are generally affordable(way cheaper than Crate & Barrel and many Park Mall establishments. I’m not even going to compare Commune against IKEA(furniture for those who have yet to grow-up!). Commune is a quintessential local Singaporean furniture shop with some stunning furniture pieces. The showroom at the Defu Industrial Park, I estimate to be 5x larger than that of the Flagship store in Millenia Walk. If you are unsure whether Commune caters to your taste before making the long trek to Defu, check out their Flagship store in Millenia Walk. In short, Commune delivers the goods, which is very much evidenced by the pictures posted above.

For some, being an adult happens when you can drink legally at bars or when you get a real paying job(and the tax bill that comes with it.) But to me, you become a REAL adult when you start seeing furniture as investment pieces. Everyone, I’d like to announce that I’ve graduated from Ikea and I now have my sights set on buying furniture that’s grown-up approved! An impending move to an unfurnished apartment has my husband and I looking for the essentials(bed frame, mattress, and a couch) and when we discovered that our favourite furniture store in Millienia Walk had an outlet, we knew we had to check it out. Admittedly, Commune’s outlet store is in a pretty ulu location, but hey, we’re adults now and we can afford a cab ride to this industrial area near Paya Lebar airbase! The showroom itself is very spacious, with lots of beautiful, contemporary, Western-style pieces to look at. Depending on when you go, there might be some good sales going on(20−50% off) so you might be able to score a good deal. Compared to the furniture shops in River Valley Road and Orchard, I’m confident Commune is more mid-range in price and a perfect step up from Ikea. We’re 80% sure that we’re going to buy a bed frame from here, so here’s hoping that everything goes smoothly with payment and delivery!
