There are two outstanding stalls at this food centre that should be highlighted. The first is the Ang Mo Kio Loh Mee/Laksa at #01−99 — you’ll spot it in the morning by the snaking queue facing the courtyard near Chong Boon Food Centre. The laksa is aromatic, the soup thick enough, and the noodles have the right texture to them. The store owners are quite generous in their condiments as well. As for the loh mee, the gravy is thick but not as fragrant as I would have expected. In recent years, the loh mee has lost its distinctive taste when compared with the loh mee at Tampines Round Market, for instance. Stick to the laksa! Note that business hours are 6.30am to 2.30pm for all days except Wednesdays, when they are off. The other stall is at #01−200, and is located on the right side of the food centre. While it doesn’t have a signboard of any sort, it’s distinguishable by lines and lines of old-fashioned biscuits, sweets, and preserved fruits hanging from all sides of the stall. In addition, cuboid-shaped tin cans(with a transparent side to show the contents) filled with loads of biscuits I once ate in my childhood days are stacked at the storefront, along with plastic bags stuffed with snacks of the old Singaporean days. The store is run by a family, and service is friendly and warm. If you’re craving for a whiff of days gone by, and love to munch on small, fresh biscuits, why not give this a try?
