Preparing a Nasi Lamek is not easy. Lots of hard work have to be done to ensure its quality. I have been to lots of places to try this out but only a few places impress me. This is one of them. Personally, I feel the quality has dropped and also the lack of queues probably says it all. I had this a few times recently, I find the rice not so fragrant but the chicken is still delicious. The chilli sauce that comes with it makes better and without it, I find it to be quite dull in taste. As this stall is located at the far end of Singapore, Boon Lay. I won’t recommend you to travel all the way here just to sample it. In fact there are a few branches, can’t remember where but you can definitely try this in other places. I prefer the ones at Changi Village, that is of course at the other end of Singapore. Overall, I find this to be average, hence my 3 star rating.

It’s not for nothing that customers willingly queue at Boon Lay Power Nasi Lemak at midnight for piping hot rice cooked in coconut milk. The corner stall often has a queue that spills out towards the car park entrance. Business is brisk and chicken wings are constantly being thrown into hot oil to replenish the ones that have been sold. The rice is especially flavourful and tasty. The fragrance of the coconut milk does not overpower a hint of pandan leaf and the rice must be savoured with the chili sauce. The turmeric-marinated chicken wings are crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. You can also choose from other items like chicken nuggets, fish fillets, eggs and chicken franks. The stall front is plastered with newspaper articles recommending the stall. I personally attest to the stall as a great supper choice if you are in the area and it is also popular among NTU students. The food isn’t as great during the dinner shift, I have no clue why but it’s true. Come between midnight and 3am, when the stall closes.

This is no doubt one of the most popular nasi lemak stores in the west, and for good reason: the nasi lemak is really as awesome as they say! After queuing for about half an hour or so, I finally got my nasi lemak. I ordered the fish set(at $ 2.50), which came with 2 fish, egg and the usual ikan bilis. Oh man, the fish was deep fried until it was absolutely crunchy; I basically ate the whole fish, flesh and bones included! The rice is yet another aspect that stands out; it was moist and fluffy. The rice is actually good enough to be eaten on its own! With the sambal chili, the rice just tastes absolutely amazing. My friend ordered the chicken set, which came with a chicken wing and egg. He remarked that the chicken wing was really tasty as well. Perhaps I’ll try the chicken set on my next visit, but the queue really scares me off sometimes.

Well, I can’t believe that there is no review on one of the more popular nasi lemak stalls in Singapore: Boon Lay Power Nasi Lemak. I always do write that food stalls in Singapore survive based on their chili sauce. This is especially true for BLPNL with it’s spicy chili sauce. While many might find that the«nasi»(rice) offered by BLPNL might not have sufficient fragrance and clumpy at times, BLPNL makes up for it with it’s fried chicken wings and chili sauce. A standard serving at $ 3.00 comes with egg, ikan bilis, one chicken wing, rice, chili and a slice or two of cucumber. One can pick additional fried food such a sausages, chicken nuggets, etc. at extra a la carte prices. The star of the show is definitely the crispy chicken wing and spicy chili sauce and is a must-try. Parking might be difficult at night as HDB carparks are nearly fully occupied at night. However, that has never set Singaporeans back from coming to Boon Lay for supper. The queue has always been especially long at this stall but service is relatively fast. Supper-goers, do take note that they open till 2am only.
