Well, yes, novelty, old school, bring back memories blah blah blah… But definitely not cheap or value for money. Bought some pineapple jam biscuits, listed as 1 kg $ 9.80, 1 tin $ 34.50. So naturally I would expect at least 4 kg in a tin. Imagine when I questioned the owner how heavy is a tin, the reply was«Depends, anywhere between 3 to 5 kg.» Now what kind of answer is that? Don’t you have a standard weight for a tin? Again reply«We would try to stuff it full, not sure about the weight». Anyway got the owner to weigh it before collecting, came to 3.75kg. Considering the tin contributes a significant amt of this weight, not very hopeful that a tin was actually more worth it. True enough, when I got home and weigh the actual content, it came to be 3.0kg only. So the tin itself weights 750g. Not to mention the $ 4 deposit for the tin and I have to make a trip back again to collect a refund. So why would someone pay $ 34.50 for 3.0kg of biscuits when the listed price was $ 9.80 per kg? Someone like me who tot that tin should be more value for money? And all the biscuits are individually packed in bundles of 3s. Convenient in keeping the product fresh but again, those small plastic bags does add up to a significant amount of weight. Anyway I believed if I researched hard enough there should really be some place in Singapore that really sells the authentic kind of tin biscuits. So judge for yourself. Special, novelty, yes. Cheap, no.

It’s great that places like these still exist — the old school biscuits that used to be sold by the tins are almost a thing of the past. Enter Biscuit King and you’ll see tin boxes of what else, biscuits, lined up to the ceiling. You can choose to order the biscuits in portions of 500g, 1kg, by the tin or by the tub(cheapest option). I always get the Sultana — the biscuit with a chewy dried grape interior. The store also sells sweets and preserved fruits. If I were a student living in the area, I’d come here everyday after school! It’s a candy and biscuits wonderland. Check out their website too — most of their products are online now so you can order your nostalgic biscuits in the comfort of your bed.
