Had a friend pick this up for me today as I was craving ayam penyet and they happened to be in the area. So speaking solely on the food, I’d give this place three stars. The chicken was a bit dry for my liking and not enough crunch to it. The chili sauce on the other hand was bold, spicy, and had a kick that made my ears ring. It was addicting though so I couldn’t really stop myself from drenching my chicken and rice with it. Will I be back for more? Probably. But does it compare to the Ali Corner stall at the Tiong Bahru Market? Nope. Ali Corner for life!

Not sure how exactly the chicken is smashed, because it looked like a normal maryland cut to me. The fried chicken is nice with a light batter. The sambal however, woweee! HOTSTUFF! Approach with caution. The extra crumbs are good to mix with the chilli to spread the heat a bit further. You also get a piece of fried tempeh, fried tofu, slice of cucumber, raw cabbage and some cold boiled kang kong. Food is served nicely on a separate plate to ease sharing. The fish is butterflied off the bone and fried to stand upright on the plate. Quite interesting to see a fish standing by itself. Suggest you order a cold drink to temper the burn of the chilli.

The ayam penyet is pretty based. Best fried chicken I’ve had on this island. Highly recommended.

I know this place is probably better known for their chicken, butI come here about once a month when I’m craving some spicy Bawal Penyet. Once you enter the restaurant theres nothing special about this place… which is good because you can tell the focus is on the food. They don’t have a giant over the top menu, just a few items which are done properly. I guess the part that keeps me coming back is chili… I like my food HOT and this to me is just right. Its nice and hot without being overly powerful or sour. I would recommend this place to any of my friends and I’ll keep coming back time and time again.

It has been quite a while since I last dined at Ayam Penyet Ria. I went early so there was no queue and the place was fairly quiet. The ayam penyet was still good. Crispy skin, quite a generous portion of chicken though the meat was a tad too dry. I liked the accompaniment — kang kong, sliced cucumber, fried tofu, tempeh and the fried crispy bits. The chili was very spicy, go easy on it if you are not used to the fiery heat. The sayur asem was also pretty good, a bit reminiscent of my childhood, where this sour vegetables soup was a common fixture during meal times. Being a warung, do not expect it to be full of ingredients which would be in your home version. I didn’t see any melinjo or young jackfruit in the bowl I had. The disappointment I had was in the iced milo I ordered. It was so diluted I thought I was just drinking slightly sweetened water. It looked so pale that you would think it was iced milk tea on the table. Note: kecap manis(sweet dark soy) and chili are also available at the counter near the kitchen if you need it.

Nested in the Heart of Orchard in Lucky Plaza, this is the place to be if you would like to try the Indonesian Cuisine, Ayam Penyet. Other than the standard Ayam Penyet, they also serve other Indonesian Cuisines such as BBQ Squid and Ikan Penyet. The food here is marinated nicely and the crispiness is just right. Although at times the chicken can be a bit dry and overdone. The redeeming factor of the dish is that the fragrance and taste of the food. People who love spicy stuff will love their SUPERSPICYCHILLI, those who think the portion of the chilli is little, better think again before asking for more. This is a place where the food is considered affordable and worth it compared to the other food you can find around Orchard.

Smashed Chicken?! Ayam Penyet is an Indonesian dish consisting of fried chicken that is then smashed to make it softer, sambal, cucumbers, fried tofu and tempeh. So of course we came here for Ayam Penyet! Finding this place is a little tricky for us as tourists but after we located Lucky Plaza and wandered around a little and here we were ready to eat! Ayam Penyet and some refreshing iced cold drinks(lime juice/teh botol sorso) really hit the spot. Even as someone that is not a fan of Deep Fried chicken I enjoyed all the hot sauces and spices in this dish. The chicken though a little dry, maybe because we were not eating at peak hour??! Since I cannot find the same dish where I live. there are NO good and authentic Indonesian food in Toronto… I guess I would come back again next time I am in town. PS Why was my Unilocal Friend kept sticking his tongue out at me while eating?

If you like ayam penyet, this is a good one. Amazingly spicy chilli, be kind to your tummy and go easy on it. The chicken is nicely battered and fried. I also like the pomfret version. The ox tail soup is yummy too. Savory and tasty. Lime juice is a necessity to cope with the heat from the chilli. The only thing we didn’t like is the oath. Strangely done non-spicy and it tasted more like a nonya kueh than a otah. Not ordering it next time!

I loved the Indonesian food here! The restaurant can be a bit chaotic(at least around lunch time) but the food is worth it. I ordered a crazy blue icey drink(can’t remember the name) and gado gado. Gado gado is a salad with potato, peanut sauce, and more — it was delicious! The prices are very reasonable also. Lucky Plaza is a somewhat random mall but it’s worth stopping by to try Ayam Penyet Ria!

Finally a place in Singapore that has acceptable spice! After having eaten all over Singapore, I haven’t really found the spiciness to live up to my expectations until I came here. This Indonesian chain has the legitimate spiciness with a hot sauce that can be eaten with all foods. The place itself seems pretty old and dirty. You sit down and get tossed a paper menu you check for the ordering as well as a laminated picture menu. Careful, the numbers on the paper don’t match the menu!!! Once you finish checking, you go to the front and pay for the food and it gets brought to you. The food is delish!!! the beefball rice noodle soup was soooo good and the smashed chicken was cooked just right with so much flavour. I also enjoyed the veggies that it came with. For $ 6.90 a dish, this place does not let you down. The lime juices are also a good pairing for the spiciness, but just beware that it’s a little on the sweet side.

The best time to eat here without having to queue and squeeze with crowds is just after 1pm or 130pm. Dinners are an absolute nightmare to have so it’s always lunch here for me when I get bored of the standard chicken rice and am looking for something with a kick! The chicken is tender and juicy most of the times, and the fried skin and crumbs taste great with the rice. If you don’t like your meat dry, avoid getting the breast meat, and go for the thighs instead. Portion wise, chicken is great, just that the rice can be too small a portion sometimes. The chilli is what keeps people coming back here, and if packs a powerful punch. Drinks are definitely a must have before you start tucking in, or you’ll end up with a dinner table where no one can talk as everyone is too busy taking care of their burning tongues!

Ayam Penyet Ria, a fast-food style self-order Indonesian restaurant, though sometimes the food tends to be a bit salty and I always feel slightly unhealthy after a meal here. Usually I order the soto ayam with rice(chicken soup, for want of better explanation). I find it the most«authentic» to Indonesia’s that you can get in Singapore, so was very delighted when I found out about this place. As a side I generally order the tahu tempur(but it is hit and miss). My friends are fans of their signature ayam penyet. They also have teh botol and also amazing avocado shakes with gula melaka(WHEN you can get it… every time I’ve come here in the recent few months, it seems to be out of stock!!! They should just take it off the menu).

Warning: Buy drinks and put it next to you before the main order comes, this is regardless of how high you think your tolerance of all things hot and spicy may be. My China friend from Szechuan(the origins of Ma La Hotpot) took a spoonful of the Ayam Penyet belachan chilli in a cruel dare and said nothing. Her face remained emotionless but we could see her eyes tearing up. This is the Ayam Penyet restaurant that Lucky Plaza’s famous for. Most of the spices here are imported from Indonesia, so you can tell they mean business. I like the environment of this shop. There’s no rushed feel of the kopitiams where you’ll usually find Ayam Penyets. Plus, it’s cleaner and more comfortable too. My favourite drinks here are the avocado juice or the delightfully pink happy soda(soda gembira). They are both sweet and thick, icy goodness to complete a sinful meal.

If you like spicy food, this is the place for you. Those who can’t shouldn’t even bother with the chilli as it’s guaranteed to leave even the most battle-hardened chilli fans gasping for breath. Served with a piece of tauhu and tempeh goreng, the highlight of this dish is the balacan-chilli that’s left precariously on the sides of the chicken in a cute wooden plate. The ayam penyet(flattened chicken) here is moist and the skin is nicely deep fried and is rather large! I like the fact that the meat shreds off the bones easily. The crumbs are packed with flavour, but sometimes they come with too little. You can always try asking for more and they’ll usually oblige if there isn’t a large crowd. They don’t serve ice water here, so make sure you have your drink before you start digging in or you’re going to have a really bad time when the chilli kicks in.
